At Mollie, data and money movement are at the heart of everything we do — and the engineers who build and maintain these systems

As an Application Engineer II, you will work on systems that operate at the core of Mollie's platform — from the financial

infrastructure that underpins every payment we process, to the data products that help our merchants grow, protect their revenue,

and optimise their performance. The work is high-stakes, high-ownership, and highly visible. You will be building systems where

correctness, reliability, and scale are non-negotiable — and where the things you ship directly impact more than 250,000

businesses across Europe.

This is not a maintenance role. You will be joining a small, fast-moving team with a clear and ambitious mandate, working in a

delivery-first environment where you take ideas from concept to production. You will have real end-to-end ownership, collaborate

closely with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders across domains, and contribute to some of the most strategically

important work happening at Mollie right now.

What you will be doing:

Design, build, and maintain backend systems and APIs that operate at high scale and high frequency — where performance, fault

tolerance, and reliability are critical.

Take ownership of features end-to-end, from architecture and estimation through to delivery, production support, and continuous

improvement.

Contribute to ambitious migration and modernisation initiatives, decoupling legacy dependencies and building cleaner, more

scalable foundations for the future.

Transform complex technical and business requirements into well-designed, production-ready solutions — working closely with

product and engineering stakeholders to shape what gets built and how.

Participate actively in agile ceremonies including brainstorming, estimation, and sprint planning, bringing both technical

depth and a product-first perspective to the table.

Identify and resolve complex issues across distributed systems, applying creative problem-solving to challenges that sit at the

intersection of engineering excellence and real merchant impact.

What you will bring:

5+ years of backend engineering experience, with strong proficiency in Java and ideally exposure to PHP; experience with Go,

C#, or Python is also valued.

Experience building and maintaining large-scale, high-volume systems — with a solid understanding of distributed systems,

queuing, caching, concurrency, fault tolerance, and scalability.

A background in financial systems, payments, or data-intensive applications is a big plus — you understand what it means to

build systems where correctness, reliability, and performance are non-negotiable.

End-to-end ownership mindset — you don't just execute tasks; you take initiative, shape ideas with a product-first approach,

and think in terms of outcomes for merchants and the business.

Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders across

domains.

As a Software Engineer II AI/ML, you will undertake some of the most technically demanding work in applied AI: designing agents that reason over complex, multi-step tasks, building the infrastructure to ensure production-grade reliability, and shaping how humans and AI collaborate at scale within a global payments company. This is not a narrow research role. You will take full ownership of your work, from early research through deployed production systems, influence the team's technical direction, and act as a force multiplier for the broader AI organization, including contributing to custom model development for structured financial data, and working toward our longer-term ambition of defining how humans and AI collaborate at scale across the company. What you’ll do: * Discover and Build: You will be an explorer within Adyen, proactively engaging with product and engineering teams to uncover their most critical challenges. You won't wait for instructions; you'll find high-impact opportunities and rapidly design and build AI prototypes (MVPs) to demonstrate value. * Develop Strategic AI Products: You will own the end-to-end development of bespoke AI tools that solve problems unique to Adyen's scale. Whether it's optimizing merchant experience, enhancing pricing models, or improving internal workflows, you will build intelligent solutions. * Own Evaluation and Benchmarking: Define and lead the evaluation strategy for the agentic systems and LLMs your team builds and deploys. Build reusable evaluation infrastructure that is embedded in the development process, not bolted on after the fact. * Provide AI Expertise Across the Organization: Serve as a technical resource for AI initiatives across Adyen - evaluating agentic frameworks, retrieval and search strategies, or agent tool-use approaches across partner teams. Surface connections across initiatives and help teams avoid duplicating work or converging on the wrong approach. * Raise the Bar: Set engineering standards for the team and company. Who you are: * You have 3-6 years of hands-on experience in applied AI/ML research or engineering, with a clear track record of shipping AI systems, including agentic or LLM-powered systems, in production environments. * You have deep expertise in language models and Generative AI, with hands-on depth across several of: architecture, post-training (fine-tuning, RLHF), inference optimization, context engineering (RAG), and failure modes at scale. * You have proven experience designing and operating agentic systems at scale, multi-agent orchestration, tool use, memory and context management, state handling for long-running workflows, and human-in-the-loop design. You understand what separates production agents from research prototypes. * You are rigorous and systematic about evaluation. You have designed evaluation frameworks or internal benchmarks that go beyond standard metrics. You understand the failure modes of LLM-as-judge approaches and know how to measure what actually matters for a given system and use-case. * You have a strong foundation in classical machine learning: supervised learning, ensemble methods, optimization, probabilistic modeling, and statistics. This Site Reliability Engineer role within Platform Engineering is focused on security projects: embedding security into system design and infrastructure to protect and accelerate our rapidly evolving technology landscape.
