In this role, you will contribute to the engineering and design of Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage projects from early-stage feasibility through construction. You will work closely with Project Managers, senior technical leaders, EPC partners, and internal teams to develop high-quality design packages, support project execution, and help drive efficient, cost-effective solutions. This is a strong opportunity for an engineer who wants to continue growing technically within utility-scale renewables while gaining broader project exposure. Responsibilities: • Support the engineering design and modeling of utility-scale, ground-mounted Solar PV and BESS projects with a focus on performance, cost efficiency, and overall project success • Prepare and review engineering drawings, site layouts, and electrical schematics using industry-standard tools such as AutoCAD, PVCase, and PVSyst to support interconnection, permitting, and feasibility efforts • Coordinate with internal engineering teams, Project Managers, and external partners to keep projects moving efficiently through design milestones and deliverable deadlines • Assist in the development of construction documents, ensuring technical accuracy, alignment with project requirements, and compliance with applicable codes and standards • Support pre-construction and project execution activities by collaborating with permitting, procurement, development, and other cross-functional teams • Contribute to technical reports, due diligence efforts, and feasibility assessments for both internal stakeholders and external clients • Stay current on solar and BESS technologies, design practices, and regulatory requirements to help improve project execution and design consistency • Provide guidance and technical support to junior engineers and designers while continuing to build depth in renewable energy project delivery Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; PE license or progress toward licensure is preferred • Minimum of 4–8 years of professional experience in Renewable Energy, with experience supporting utility-scale Solar PV and/or BESS projects • Experience with energy storage and/or utility-scale solar design, including areas such as battery sizing, one-line development, site layout, inverter selection, cable ampacity calculations, grounding, protective relaying, and related systems design • Proficiency with Solar PV modeling software and other relevant engineering tools • Familiarity with utility-scale solar project design packages, including single-line diagrams, civil, structural, and electrical site plans, DC and AC wiring diagrams, and equipment layouts • Understanding of practical solar power plant design applications, including PV string sizing, DC and AC conductor/conduit sizing, and racking/tracker layouts and power distribution • Strong communication and coordination skills with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced project environment Pay Scale - $90,000 - $135,000 base + benefits + bonus.  Disclaimer  While AI tools may support your application process, this role is built on human talent. This position requires the individual to develop and demonstrate expertise in performing the core responsibilities outlined below. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Demonstrate a strong understanding of structural engineering principles involved in the design of structural steel and concrete foundations for utility scale solar, BESS, and substation-related projects. * Possess strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills; must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering high-quality work through effective collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams, including substation physical, protection & control, SCADA, civil, structural, transmission, distribution, collection system, studies, construction, procurement, and project management. * Communicate effectively with all project stakeholders and internal teams, actively coordinating engineering and design activities across disciplines to ensure integration, compliance, and consistency throughout project execution. * Lead engineering efforts from project initiation to completion, working closely with drafters, designers, and engineers to develop, review, and finalize design drawings and packages. * Draft, review, and finalize a variety of technical documents including master deliverable lists, design criteria, engineering reports, specifications, bills of materials, and proposals. * Have a solid understanding of industry practices and standards such as IBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 113, ACI 318, ACI 336.1, AISC 360, IEEE, NEC and other applicable codes and standards. * Review internal and external designs for compliance with safety codes, client standards, constructability, and best design practices; conduct interdisciplinary reviews to ensure seamless coordination across all engineering disciplines. * Report workload status to the Project Manager (PM) and Discipline Manager (DM) regularly and complete assignments within the defined scope, schedule, and budget, while ensuring a high level of accuracy and adherence to Atwell’s quality standards. * Assist PMs in the development of proposal documents, technical scopes, and cost estimates for bids and change orders. * Proficiency in using standard tools including MS Office, Outlook, Teams, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam is essential. * Ability to develop new custom design tools, manual calculation sheets, and report templates using Mathcad or Excel is required. * Occasional travel (less than 20%) may be required for site visits, field walkdowns, or client meetings. KEY COMPETENCIES AND SKILLSET * Lead structural design for solar, BESS, and substation projects by producing high-quality drawing packages, including foundation plan/details, steel plan/assemblies, steel fabrication details, design specifications, and bill of materials. * Apply geotechnical and corrosion recommendations in steel pile designs. * Proficiency in structural design software such as ROBOT, RISA 3D, RISA Foundation, L-PILE, MFAD and Hilti PROFIS Engineering Suite, or equivalent software is required. * Experience with software such as Revit, PVcase, Civil 3D, and transmission line modelling tools (PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, or PLS-TOWER) is a plus. * Must have experience with power systems equipment, including PV modules, inverters, racking, piles, batteries, BMS/EMS, disconnects, transformers, switchgear, control building, cap banks, and other HV equipment/components. * Review project data to analyze existing site conditions and factors to consider for design development such as: geotechnical reports, manufacturer data, surveys, and easement documents. * Coordinate closely with civil and electrical teams to integrate structural design with site access, equipment placement, structural supports, and foundation requirements. EDUCATION * Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (ABET Accredited) * Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) License required Pay Range - $135,000 - $175,000+ base, end of year bonus, benefits. We are a full-service consulting firm specializing in the design and execution of power generation and power delivery systems across a range of markets: utility-scale wind, solar, BESS, and high-voltage substations, transmission, and distribution infrastructure. What You’ll Do * Apply core electrical engineering principles to the design of high-voltage systems (substations, T&D, utility-scale renewables) * Lead engineering tasks from project kickoff through to design package completion * Collaborate with civil, structural, SCADA, and protection & control engineers to deliver integrated project solutions * Prepare technical documentation: one-line diagrams, studies, specs, reports, BOMs, proposals, and client-facing deliverables * Ensure designs meet NEC, NESC, IEEE, NFPA, ANSI, and other industry standards * Support project managers with estimating, proposal writing, and client communication * Participate in interdisciplinary reviews and QA/QC efforts across engineering teams * Occasionally travel (less than 20%) for field walkdowns, client meetings, or construction support Focus Areas (Team Dependent) Protection & Control (P&C) * Design P&C packages: one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, relays, communication diagrams, SCADA points * Conduct battery sizing, voltage drop, and conduit fill calcs * Develop relay settings and perform arc flash and coordination studies * Interface with SCADA/RTAC systems and vendors for major equipment submittals Electrical Studies * Perform studies: short circuit, load flow, grounding, insulation coordination, harmonics, arc flash, etc. * Use software tools such as ETAP, CYMCAP, PSS/E, SKM, ASPEN, PSCAD, EMTP, and more * Draft interconnection studies and evaluate compliance with utility or ISO requirements * Translate technical findings into clear client-facing reports What We’re Looking For * Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET Accredited) * 5–10+ years of experience in electrical engineering with a focus in power systems, renewable energy, or substations * Proficiency in AutoCAD, Bluebeam, MS Office, and at least one power system analysis software Pay Range - $90,000 - $150,000 Disclaimer  While AI tools may support your application process, this role is built on human talent.
