AN OVERVIEW OF THIS ROLE As the Engineering Manager, GitLab Delivery - Operate, you’ll guide a globally distributed team focused on making it easier for customers to deploy, upgrade, and run GitLab reliably in their own infrastructure. You’ll help shape the systems and tooling that support environments ranging from single-node virtual machines to large Kubernetes clusters, with a focus on reliability, operational simplicity, upgrade velocity, and zero-downtime capabilities across GitLab.com, GitLab Dedicated, and self-managed deployments. In this role, you’ll partner closely with a Product Manager and work across Infrastructure Platforms to connect customer needs and business goals with practical engineering choices. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for someone who wants to support a high-performing team while influencing how GitLab is delivered at scale. In your first year, you’ll help the team deliver better deployment and upgrade experiences, guide technical direction in areas like Kubernetes Operators, Helm charts, and cloud-native deployment architectures, and contribute to incident management to help support the availability of GitLab.com. WHAT YOU’LL DO * Guide a globally distributed engineering team and create an environment where team members can do strong work and grow in an all-remote, asynchronous setting. * Hire onboard, and develop team members who align with GitLab’s values and contribute to an outcome-focused engineering organization. * Manage and improve agile, asynchronous workflows so the team can deliver deployment tooling and services iteratively and reliably. * Partner with Product Management and engineering peers across Infrastructure Platforms to align team priorities with customer needs and business goals. * Own the reliability, upgrade experience, and operational simplicity of GitLab deployments across self-managed environments, GitLab.com, and GitLab Dedicated. * Improve deployment patterns, observability, zero-downtime capabilities, and upgrade orchestration for customers running GitLab on their own infrastructure. * Apply technical judgment in areas such as Kubernetes Operators, Helm charts, and stateful application delivery to guide choices and unblock the team. * Participate in incident management and work with reliability and development teams to help maintain the availability of GitLab.com. WHAT YOU’LL BRING * Experience guiding deployment tooling, platform engineering, or site reliability engineering teams that operate at meaningful scale. * Strong technical knowledge of Kubernetes Operators, Helm charts for stateful applications, and upgrade orchestration patterns. * Familiarity with cloud-native deployment architectures, database lifecycle management, schema migrations, and zero-downtime upgrade strategies. * Experience working on enterprise-scale or consumer-scale platforms, ideally in a product-focused software environment. * Ability to investigate complex deployment and operational issues and explain tradeoffs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. * Experience building high-performing, distributed teams and supporting team members in an asynchronous, all-remote environment. * Effective cross-functional skills across functions such as Infrastructure, Support, and Customer Success to improve customer outcomes. * Openness to diverse paths into the role, including transferable skills, formal computer science education, or equivalent practical experience, along with interest in open source and developer tools. ABOUT THE TEAM The GitLab Delivery - Operate team is part of the Infrastructure Platforms department, which enables how GitLab operates, scales, and is delivered across GitLab.com, GitLab Dedicated, and self-managed offerings. We are a globally distributed team that owns deployment tooling and operational patterns to help customers run GitLab reliably on infrastructure ranging from virtual machines to Kubernetes clusters. AN OVERVIEW OF THIS ROLE As an Engineering Manager, Observability, Monitoring, and Integrations (Monetization), you'll manage a team focused on observability, reliability, and secure cross-system integrations across GitLab's Monetization area. This is a people-first management role where you'll hire and develop the team, guide technical direction, and help shape an AI-native approach to detecting anomalies and improving performance in business-critical workflows. You'll work closely with product, design, sales, go-to-market, finance, information technology, and support engineering to turn business needs into reliable customer experiences. In your first year, you'll stand up the team, establish operating rhythms and incident response practices, and improve the reliability, availability, and data quality of fulfillment systems that directly affect revenue and the customer experience. Some examples of our projects:  * Improving the reliability and availability of Fulfillment infrastructure and customer-facing buyer journeys * Making foundational improvements to the architecture and data models of Fulfillment systems * Delivering high-impact changes across pricing, billing, provisioning, subscriptions, and usage-related experiences WHAT YOU’LL DO * Architect end-to-end telemetry and observability across CustomersDot, Salesforce, and Zuora to enable real-time monitoring and faster issue resolution across purchasing and provisioning flows. * Implement automated billing anomaly detection to identify event drops, abuse spikes, and transactional discrepancies that affect reconciliation and financial integrity. * Define the integration strategy between customer-facing monetization services and enterprise applications, including Salesforce and Workato, with a focus on durable API contracts and reliable financial workflows. * Drive an AI-native engineering approach that uses machine learning and AI-enabled tooling to surface anomalies, improve infrastructure operations, and inform delivery planning. * Hire and grow a high-performing team, setting expectations for ownership, quality, and collaboration from the ground up. * Guide architecture and implementation discussions, helping the team make sound tradeoffs across reliability, availability, data model quality, and developer experience. * Partner with cross-functional stakeholders across engineering, product, finance, customer service, and go-to-market teams to coordinate changes in revenue-impacting systems with care and clarity. * Establish incident management practices, rollout safeguards, and operational standards for systems handling customer-facing and financially critical workflows. WHAT YOU’LL BRING * Experience managing product, platform, or development teams and building values-aligned environments where team members can grow and deliver meaningful results. * Strong technical judgment across architecture, system design, and pragmatic delivery for complex integrations and business-critical workflows. * Experience working on purchasing, billing, provisioning, subscription, commerce, or other revenue-impacting systems. * Knowledge of observability-first architectures, including tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and modern incident management tooling. * Experience defining service level indicators and targets, writing runbooks, and coordinating incident management in operationally rigorous environments. * Strong collaboration and written communication skills in asynchronous, handbook-first teams that work across engineering, product, finance, customer service, and go-to-market functions. * Ability to translate complex technical and product issues into clear, actionable language for both technical and non-technical audiences. * Sound judgment when handling confidential or financial information, customer-facing incidents, and changes that can affect revenue, with openness to transferable experience from related domains. ABOUT THE TEAM The Fulfillment team builds and operates the infrastructure behind GitLab's purchasing workflows, and we partner closely with sales, finance, information technology, and support to deliver secure, reliable buyer experiences. Within the broader Monetization section, we focus on the systems and integrations that connect billing, provisioning, subscriptions, and usage across multiple platforms. AN OVERVIEW OF THIS ROLE As an Engineering Manager, you’ll guide GitLab’s dedicated Software Supply Chain Security (SSCS) Add-On engineering team as it develops core capabilities including Dependency Firewall, Build Provenance, Malicious Packages detection, and Artifact Signing. This is a founding management role where you’ll help shape how the team works, partner closely with the Staff Backend Engineer, Product Manager, and SSCS stage management, and turn a defined roadmap into steady, high-quality delivery for enterprise customers with strict security and compliance needs. You’ll focus on developing the team, creating a healthy operating rhythm, and establishing predictable execution for the SSCS SKU. You’ll join a product area where customers in regulated industries are already validating the need, and your work will help GitLab deliver software supply chain security features that customers can rely on. While technical credibility matters, your main focus will be growing a strong backend engineering team, enabling team members in their development, and creating the conditions for long-term delivery and quality. WHAT YOU’LL DO * Guide a backend engineering team building the SSCS Add-On across dependency enforcement, build provenance, malicious package detection, and artifact signing. * Be responsible for Drive engineering delivery for general availability milestones by aligning sequencing, scope, and dependencies with the Staff Backend Engineer and Product Manager. * Develop the team by partnering with Talent Acquisition on sourcing, interview design, candidate evaluation, and hiring decisions. * Run regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development conversations that enable growth and clear expectations. * Advance engineering quality by monitoring cycle time, defect rates, and test coverage, and by addressing risks early. * Coordinate quarterly planning and roadmap tradeoff discussions with SSCS stage leadership and Product. * Work with Finance and other partners on headcount pacing and team planning as the Add-On scales. * Represent the SSCS Add-On team within stage leadership discussions and help ensure strong communication across functions. WHAT YOU’LL BRING * Over 3 years of experience guiding backend product engineering teams in security, DevOps, or platform engineering environments. * Ability to hire and grow backend or security engineers in distributed team environments, with practical understanding of the talent landscape for these roles. * Technical credibility to contribute to architecture discussions involving package registries, CI/CD pipeline security, and signing infrastructure. * Experience managing predictable delivery across multi-quarter product roadmaps and managing cross-team dependencies. * Comfort working in an asynchronous, documentation-driven organization with clear written communication. * Familiarity with supply chain security, artifact management, or compliance-focused product areas, or transferable experience from related domains. * Working knowledge of concepts related to frameworks and ecosystems such as SLSA and Sigstore. * Ability to build credibility with engineers, product partners, and customer-facing stakeholders through clear judgment, coaching, and teamwork. ABOUT THE TEAM The SSCS Add-On team is a product engineering team within GitLab’s Software Supply Chain Security stage. We work on key capabilities in the SSCS Add-On SKU and collaborate closely with product and engineering partners to deliver security features for customers operating in regulated environments. You’ll report to the SSCS Senior Engineering Manager and partner directly with the Staff Backend Engineer and Product Manager.
