ROLE OVERVIEW The Commerce team is responsible for building next-generation cloud commerce systems that power pricing, billing, usage metering, and revenue generation for Coupang’s cloud platform. This team operates as the backbone of the cloud business, enabling accurate pricing, discounting, invoicing, and real-time usage visibility for customers. The systems are highly scalable and event-driven, ingesting and processing massive volumes of data—including customer usage events and Kubernetes-driven infrastructure signals. As the platform scales from early-stage adoption to large-scale rollout, it is expected to handle exponentially growing workloads, potentially reaching hundreds of millions to billions of events, while maintaining high performance and reliability. A key focus of this team is building financial-grade systems that ensure accuracy, consistency, and correctness in billing, pricing, and revenue computation. These systems must provide real-time insights to customers while guaranteeing precise accounting of usage and charges. As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will act as a technical leader, translating complex business requirements into scalable architecture and distributed systems. You will design and build low-latency, high-throughput backend services that can support multi-tenant cloud environments, ensure reliability under rapid growth, and maintain strict correctness in revenue-critical workflows. WHAT YOU WILL DO * Design and build scalable backend systems for pricing, billing, and usage metering * Develop event-driven architectures to process large volumes of real-time usage and infrastructure data * Build systems that provide real-time visibility into customer usage and billing metrics * Design components for rate cards, pricing plans, discounting, and multi-currency transactions * Work on distributed systems that support exponential growth in customers and usage events * Collaborate with product, infrastructure, and platform teams to build cloud-native commerce capabilities * Ensure high levels of accuracy, reliability, and scalability in revenue-critical systems * Contribute to architecture decisions and drive engineering best practices BASIC QUALIFICATIONS * 8+ years of backend engineering experience  * Strong proficiency in Java-based backend development * Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) * Experience building event-driven architectures and distributed systems * Experience designing and scaling high-throughput systems handling large volumes of events * Experience working with AWS-managed databases (e.g., Aurora or similar OLTP systems) * Familiarity with containerized systems and Kubernetes ecosystems * Experience building real-time systems (e.g., usage tracking, billing, metering pipelines) * Strong understanding of system design, scalability, and reliability principles * Strong problem-solving skills with focus on efficiency and correctness * Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Experience with Golang for backend development * Deep expertise in AWS ecosystem (compute, storage, distributed services) * Experience designing large-scale event processing systems (hundreds of millions to billions of events) * Experience building cloud commerce platforms, billing systems, or pricing engines * Familiarity with real-time usage metering, invoicing, or revenue systems * Experience working with Kubernetes-based observability signals (logs, infra events, metrics) * Exposure to high-growth systems scaling from early stage to large production scale * Experience building multi-tenant, customer-facing cloud platforms TYPE OF WORK MODEL * Hybrid / Onsite / Remote working * Our Hybrid work model: Coupang hybrid work model is designed to enable a culture of collaboration that acts a catalyst to enrich the experience of employees. You will apply SRE best practices, automation, and performance optimization to deliver resilient infrastructure. This role partners closely with engineering teams and vendors to drive operational excellence while maintaining security and compliance standards. What You Will Do Observability and Monitoring: • Design, implement, and maintain observability solutions for datacentre infrastructure. • Develop, deploy, and maintain the operational and reliability components of a large-scale Observability and Telemetry collection platform, emphasizing performance at scale, real-time monitoring, logging, and alerting. • Participate in and enhance the entire lifecycle of services, from inception and design to deployment, operation, and refinement. • Develop and optimize monitoring systems to ensure high availability and performance. • Create and manage dashboards, alerts, and reports to provide visibility into system health and performance. Site Reliability Engineering (SRE): • Implement SRE best practices to improve the reliability, scalability, and performance of datacentre services. • Develop and maintain automation scripts for infrastructure provisioning, monitoring, and management. • Conduct root cause analysis and post-mortem reviews to prevent recurrence of incidents. Performance Optimization: • Analyze and optimize the performance of datacentre systems and applications. • Implement best practices for resource utilization and efficiency. Collaboration: • Work closely with other engineering teams to understand and meet their observability and reliability requirements. • Collaborate with hardware and software vendors to evaluate and integrate new technologies. Security and Compliance: • Ensure that observability and reliability solutions comply with security policies and industry standards. • Implement and maintain security measures to protect data and infrastructure. Troubleshooting and Support: • Provide support for observability and reliability-related issues, including debugging and resolving hardware and software problems. • Develop and maintain documentation for troubleshooting procedures and best practices. This role focuses on developing high-performance monitoring and telemetry platforms, ensuring system reliability, and driving operational excellence through automation, performance optimization, and SRE best practices. The ideal candidate will work across the full service lifecycle—design, deployment, and continuous improvement—while collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance visibility, resilience, and efficiency of critical systems. PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION * Analyze system and application performance across the datacenter infrastructure to identify bottlenecks and improvement areas. * Implement optimization strategies to enhance performance, efficiency, and resource utilization. COLLABORATION * Partner with cross-functional engineering teams to understand observability and reliability requirements and deliver effective solutions. * Collaborate with hardware and software vendors to evaluate, integrate, and optimize new technologies within the ecosystem. SECURITY AND COMPLIANCE * Ensure observability and reliability solutions adhere to organizational security policies and industry standards. * Implement and maintain appropriate security controls to safeguard infrastructure, systems, and data. TROUBLESHOOTING AND SUPPORT * Provide hands-on support for observability and reliability issues, including debugging complex hardware and software problems. * Develop and maintain documentation, including troubleshooting guides and operational best practices, to support efficient issue resolution.
