AI ENGINEER / AI ENABLEMENT ENGINEER (M/F/D) Location: Flexible — Hamburg, Berlin ABOUT FREENOW FREENOW empowers smarter mobility decisions, helping people move freely and cities thrive. As Europe’s leading Mobility Super App, we serve more than 54 million users across 16 markets and 170+ cities. AI is becoming core to how we build products, operate the platform, and support our teams. To move from experimentation to real, measurable impact, we are building a central AI Enablement & Evaluation team — and we’re looking for a Senior AI Engineer to help turn AI into a reliable, scalable capability across the company. If you enjoy building AI systems that actually ship, scale, and deliver value — not just demos — this is your next ride 🚕 YOUR MISSION As a Senior AI Engineer, you will sit at the intersection of AI engineering, evaluation, and enablement. Your role is to ensure that AI systems at FREENOW are production-ready, measurable, and safe, while accelerating adoption across product and engineering teams. You will help transform AI from isolated pilots into reusable platforms, tools, and workflows used across the organization. YOUR DAILY ADVENTURES WILL INCLUDE * Designing, building, and maintaining production-grade AI systems using LLMs, agents, and retrieval-based architectures * Owning and evolving the AI Evaluation Framework, including: * multi-turn evaluations * quality, safety, and hallucination metrics * offline and production-data evaluation * Partnering with Product, Engineering, Legal, and Security to ensure AI solutions are compliant, observable, and trustworthy * Supporting and scaling internal AI products such as FreenowGPT and domain-specific AI assistants * Enabling teams through shared tooling, patterns, and best practices (e.g. Gemini enablement, prompt & agent patterns) * Building reusable AI components (RAG pipelines, agent orchestration, model access layers) * Helping define standards for agent-ready architecture (MCP integrations, model abstraction, permissions) * Monitoring AI system performance, cost, and reliability in production * Acting as a technical reference point for AI across squads — from experimentation to rollout OUR AI & TECH STACK Python | LLM APIs (Gemini, OpenAI) | Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) Databricks | Cloud Infrastructure | APIs & Backend Services Evaluation tooling | Observability & monitoring | Internal developer tooling (Exact tools matter less than strong engineering fundamentals — the stack will evolve.) TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE * You have strong experience as an AI Engineer, ML Engineer, or Senior Software Engineer working with modern AI systems * You’ve built or operated LLM-based systems in production, not just prototypes * You understand the failure modes of LLMs (hallucinations, non-determinism, evaluation challenges) * You consistently balance speed, quality, and pragmatism; knowing when to ship, when to iterate, and when correctness is non-negotiable in production AI systems. * You are comfortable designing evaluation frameworks and defining quality metrics for AI behavior * You have solid backend engineering fundamentals (APIs, services, data access) * You enjoy working across teams and explaining complex AI concepts clearly * You care about reliability, safety, and real business impact, not hype * You are fluent in English NICE TO HAVE * Experience with agentic systems or multi-step workflows * Familiarity with AI governance, risk, or compliance considerations (e.g. GDPR, EU AI Act) * Experience enabling other teams through platforms, SDKs, or internal tools * Prior work in marketplaces, mobility, or large-scale consumer products WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS Most companies experiment with AI. Very few manage to scale it responsibly and profitably. This role is central to: * reducing AI risk in customer-facing systems (support, dispatch, booking), * unlocking company-wide productivity through internal AI products, * and building the technical foundations that allow FREENOW to move fast without breaking trust. You’ll help define how AI is built at FREENOW for years to come. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BENEFITS & PERKS IN A NUTSHELL: * Flexible working arrangements * LinkedIn Learning * Sabbatical & special leave policies * WeRoad partnership * Birthday, 24th + 31st December off * Short term EU work policy * Mobility Credit * Health insurance * Employee assistance program Plus more local benefits depending on your work location! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION: Freenow is an equal opportunity employer and we consider qualified applicants regardless of race, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or age. JOIN US AS A WORKING STUDENT COMPLIANCE ENGINEERING (ALL GENDERS) IN OUR CLOUD & PLATFORM ENGINEERING TEAM AND HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF AUTONOMOUS MOBILITY! Join us as a Working Student Compliance Engineering (all genders) in our Application Security team and help shape the future of autonomous mobility! Our Application Security Team is a group of cybersecurity experts providing shared security services for MOIA's autonomous driving operations. Sitting within the Cloud System Development Department, we safeguard the systems that power the next generation of urban mobility. We work at the exciting intersection of cutting-edge technology, regulatory compliance, and artificial intelligence — ensuring that as our autonomous vehicles move forward, they do so securely and in full compliance with evolving legal frameworks. This is a unique opportunity to pioneer the emerging field of Compliance / Legal Engineering — where law meets code. As autonomous driving technology accelerates, so does the complexity of the regulatory landscape surrounding it. We're looking for a curious, motivated working student who wants to build the bridge between legal compliance and technical automation. Whether you come from a legal background with a passion for technology, or a technical background with a fascination for law and standards, you'll find meaningful work here that shapes how an entire industry approaches compliance. WHAT YOU WILL DO * Design and deploy agentic AI workflows to automate compliance processes for autonomous driving operations (e.g., via AWS Bedrock AgentCore). * Implement automation solutions that translate complex regulatory requirements (e.g., EU AI Act, NIS2, CRA, GDPR, etc.) into enforceable technical controls. * Work hands-on with compliance automation platforms (e.g., Vanta) and cloud security posture management tools (e.g., Wiz) to monitor and maintain our compliance posture. * Collaborate with cross-functional teams — including security engineers, data scientists, autonomous driving safety experts, legal counsel, risk management, and audit functions — to identify and address compliance gaps. * Research and map applicable legal frameworks and international standards (e.g., ISO 27001, ISO 21434, SOTIF, type-approval regulations, etc.) to our technical infrastructure. * Contribute to the development of internal tooling and CI/CD pipelines that embed compliance checks directly into software delivery processes (e.g., via MCP servers). * Support the creation of documentation, reports, and dashboards that communicate compliance status to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. * Explore emerging approaches to regulatory technology (RegTech) and propose innovative solutions to keep MOIA ahead of evolving requirements. WHAT WILL HELP YOU TO FULFILL YOUR ROLE * You are currently enrolled in a full-time Bachelor's or Master's program. * To support your personal development and for you to take ownership of projects and processes, you should be enrolled for at least one year. * You communicate with clarity and confidence in English (C1 CEFR level) comfortable engaging with diverse stakeholders in a fast-paced environment (must have requirement) * You bring a genuine interdisciplinary mindset: if you're from a legal background, you have a strong hands-on interest in AI, coding, and technology implementation (actual code, not just theory or AI laws); if you're from a technical background, you have a real curiosity about law, regulation, and standards in autonomous driving * You are proficient in at least one programming or data manipulation language or have a demonstrated willingness and ability to learn quickly * You have foundational knowledge of — or eagerness to develop skills in — cloud computing (primarily AWS) and/or cybersecurity principles * You understand (or want to learn) CI/CD concepts and modern software development practices * You are self-driven, organized, and able to manage your time effectively in a remote-first setting Bonus points if you bring: * Experience (including internships or academic projects) in autonomous driving, automotive, software development, cloud computing, or compliance * Familiarity with regulations such as the EU AI Act, NIS2 Directive, Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), GDPR, or similar * Exposure to international standards like ISO 27001, ISO 9001, ISO 21434, frameworks from NIST and ENISA, or regulatory environments outside of Germany * Project management skills or experience coordinating work with multiple stakeholders We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds — even if you don’t meet every requirement. If you’re excited about the role and MOIA’s mission, we’d love to hear from you! JOIN OUR STUDENT COMMUNITY Are you curious, motivated, and eager to learn? So are we! Our student community is made up of around 30 passionate individuals based in Hamburg and Berlin.
