The Institute of Clinical Sciences is one of six Institutes within Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and celiac disease are two common, chronic gastrointestinal diseases. This is a dynamic field with many unanswered questions and great potential for a long-term scientific career. The GI Epidemiology research group conducts clinical epidemiological studies primarily on IBD and celiac disease, using Scandinavian, national, and regional health register data. The research aims to better understand risk factors, prognosis, related diseases, and treatment responses. This research is led by Associate Professor Karl Mårild and carried out at the Department of Pediatrics.

We are currently seeking 1–2 dedicated postdoctoral researchers with experience in clinical epidemiology or biostatistics to join ongoing and upcoming projects focused on improving the understanding of risk stratification, prognostication, and clinical outcomes in IBD and celiac disease. The project is conducted in close collaboration with other clinical researchers, nationally and internationally. Subject area description

Epidemiological research on IBD and/or celiac disease mainly using national and regional health administrative data.

Duties

The aim of this position is to use register-based data to answer clinical epidemiological research questions related to IBD and celiac disease. This includes questions on how risk evolves over time and which factors influence the risk of IBD and celiac disease, such as medication use and comorbidities. The work will also involve prediction modeling and studying the prognosis of IBD and celiac disease. The data are mostly register-based but may also include clinical variables.

You are expected to lead specific research studies largely independently. This work includes all parts of the research, including writing statistical analysis plan (SAP), perform statistical analyses of data and manuscript writing. You may also be involved in supervising PhD students, contributing to project management, and assisting other group members' research. You may contribute to funding applications and scientific meetings within the project.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in clinical medicine, epidemiology, or biostatistics. The research focuses on clinical research questions and clinical experience within gastroenterology pediatrics or medicine is advantageous. Skills in causal inference, longitudinal methods, survival analysis, regression modeling, machine learning, or prediction modeling are required, as well as experience with statistical software such as R, SAS, or STATA. Experience in clinical epidemiology using Swedish health-register data is particularly meritorious

You are expected to have excellent spoken and written English skills, as well as documented experience in writing and publishing scientific articles in high-impact journals, within for instance clinical medicine, or clinical epidemiology. You have the clinical experience to formulate relevant research questions and interpret results from such studies. Knowledge of Swedish or another Nordic language is a merit. We value independence in designing studies, conducting statistical analyses, and leading research projects.

We are looking for a driven and independent individual with good organizational skills and the ability to work efficiently. You are collaborative and a team player with strong social skills and empathy. Furthermore, you are curious, adaptable, and willing to learn from other research fields, with a structured yet flexible approach to work. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Research project and research environment The Gothenburg Research Program on Pregnancy and Politics (PregDem) is a cross-disciplinary research program bringing together political scientists, midwives, obstetricians, and other researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Princeton University, and McGill University. Its overarching aim is to deepen understanding of how pregnancy and becoming a parent affect people’s relationship to society, work, and politics – and how political and institutional conditions, in turn, shape experiences of pregnancy, care, and early parenthood. The program also includes research on whether and how the policy preferences of pregnant people and their partners are taken up by political parties, parliaments, and public policy. Project 2: Perinatal health, measurement strategies, and inequality in social outcomes. In this project, we examine differences in perinatal health and care, as well as possible long-term consequences of health complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and the early period with a young child. One part of the project uses data from the Swedish Pregnancy Register and the Swedish Neonatal Care Register to develop comparable measures of health need, care burden, and complications. Another part links these measures to sources such as LISA and electoral registers to analyze inequalities in care relative to need and possible consequences for political participation and labor market outcomes. By combining direct measurements of albumin reabsorption with single-cell transcriptomics, the project seeks to identify molecular programs underlying epithelial dysfunction and to discover targetable pathways relevant to kidney disease. Duties The successful candidate will lead experimental work across multiple PTEC injury models, including toxic, metabolic, inflammatory, and hypoxia–reoxygenation stress. Key tasks include functional uptake assays using fluorescently labelled albumin, cell and tissue imaging, preparation of single-cell RNA sequencing libraries, data generation from primary human PTECs and acute kidney slices, and close collaboration with computational researchers for downstream analysis. Validation of candidate pathways in tissue slices will be an additional component of the work. Postdoctor in translational mucosal biology

We are currently seeking a candidate for a postdoctoral position in colorectal cancer (CRC) research. The project will explore the role of goblet cell-intrinsic mucosal defence systems in determining susceptibility to CRC. The candidate will join a newly established Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM) at the University of Gothenburg (https://wcmtm.gu.se/). As part of this venture, Dr. George Birchenough has established his research group (https://www.birchenoughlab.org/) at the Department of Medical Biochemistry & Cell Biology at the University of Gothenburg. The group works towards a better understanding of how mucosal defence systems control our interactions with the environment, how those systems fail in disease and how they might be prophylactically or therapeutically targeted. The group is part of a large network of researchers at Gothenburg University, most importantly the Mucin Biology Groups cluster (http://www.medkem.gu.se/mucinbiology/) that currently includes over 30 researchers working at the forefront of mucosal biology. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with experts in multiple experimental methods that work within the cluster, as well as more widely with other local and national groups within the WCMTM network. Subject area Translational Mucosal Biology Subject area description Our mucosal surfaces are the interface between the environment and our tissues. Their physiological functions are critical, but necessitate constant exposure of living cells to a vast collection of microbial lifeforms that includes many opportunistic and obligate pathogens. As a result, our mucosa has evolved multiple defensive systems that allow them to endure in this environment, and failure of these systems is often linked to development of acute and chronic disease. Consequently, understanding the development and regulation of these systems is key to understanding the pathoaetiology of mucosal disease and how they can be prevented or treated. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most frequent and lethal types of cancer, and is especially prevalent in nations with a high human development index, indicating that factors associated with a modern, Westernized lifestyle are linked to CRC development. Most cases of CRC result from spontaneous mutations rather than heritable oncogenic mutations, and dysregulated interactions between the intestinal microbiota and immune system are implicated in tumorigenesis. Goblet cell-intrinsic defence systems, such as the mucus layer and sentinel goblet cells normally control host-microbiota interactions, but we have recently found that these systems are highly susceptible to environmental alterations caused by exposure to a Western-style diet. Thus, disruption of goblet cell-dependent functions may have a causal relationship with CRC development. By combining data from pre-clinical mouse models with analysis of samples from healthy and CRC patients, we hope to develop a better understanding of how goblet cell functions contribute to CRC susceptibility and develop new approaches to prevent CRC development. Duties The successful candidate will be expected to work extensively with pre-clinical mouse models and human tissues acquired during routine surgery. The candidate will be encouraged and expected to conduct their experimental research in an independent manner and to make significant contributions to project planning. The candidate will also actively contribute to the local research environment at the Mucin Biology Groups and engage in interactions with collaborators and other groups belonging to the WCMTM network.
