Available Locations: Austin About the role We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Insider Threat Tech Lead to join our dynamic and growing Security Threat Detection, Response and Emulation team. This is a critical role that will be at the forefront of protecting our company from malicious and negligent insider activities. You will be responsible for leading the technical aspects of our Insider Threat program, including investigations, threat hunting, and the development of cutting-edge detections and responses. This role requires a unique blend of technical expertise, regulatory and legal knowledge, investigative skills, and strong interpersonal communication. You will be a key point of contact and collaborator with our Privacy, Legal, GRC and HR teams, ensuring that all activities are conducted with the utmost care, in accordance with company policy, and in compliance with legal and ethical standards. WHAT YOU'LL DO * Lead Insider Threat Digital Investigations: * * Conduct comprehensive technical investigations individually and partnering with our incident response teams into potential insider threat incidents, including data exfiltration, intellectual property theft, unauthorized access, and other malicious activities. * Knowledge and execution experience in collecting, preserving , and analyzing digital evidence from a variety of sources (e.g., endpoints, network logs, cloud services, email, etc.). * Document all investigative steps and findings in a clear, concise, and defensible manner. * Present findings to senior leadership and cross-functional partners (Legal, HR, Privacy) in a professional and objective manner. * Ensuring regulatory, legal and privacy requirements are met through all * Insider Threat Hunting: * Proactively hunt for insider threats using a variety of security tools and data sources (e.g., SIEM, DLP, EDR, UEBA). * Develop and execute threat hunting hypotheses based on emerging threats, attack techniques, and an understanding of our company's unique environment. * Correlate disparate data points to identify anomalous or suspicious user behaviors. * Detection & Response Improvement: * Collaborate closely with the Security Incident Response Team (SIRT) and Threat Detection teams to continuously enhance our insider threat detection capabilities. * Design, develop, and implement new rules, alerts, and use cases in our security tools to identify insider threat indicators. * Evaluate and recommend new technologies and processes to mature our Insider Threat program. * Develop and refine response playbooks for various insider threat scenarios. * Cross-Functional Collaboration: * Serve as the primary technical liaison for the Insider Threat program, building strong, trusted relationships with Legal, HR, and Privacy teams. * Work in lockstep with these teams to ensure that investigations are conducted with sensitivity, respect for employee privacy, and within legal and ethical guidelines. * Provide technical expertise and guidance during policy development and incident response planning. Required Qualifications: * 5+ years of experience in a technical security role, with at least 2+ years focused on insider threat, digital forensics, or security investigations. * Proven experience in conducting and leading complex technical investigations, including the use of forensic tools (e.g., EnCase, FTK, X-Ways, or open-source alternatives). * Deep understanding of security technologies such as SIEM (e.g., Splunk, Elastic), EDR (e.g., CrowdStrike, SentinelOne), and UEBA like data sources. * Strong scripting and programming skills (e.g., Python, PowerShell) to automate tasks and analyze large datasets. * Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences. * Experience working with legal and HR teams on sensitive employee-related matters. Preferred Qualifications: * Certifications such as GCIH, GCFA, GCTI, or similar. * Experience with cloud-based security and investigations (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure). * Prior experience in a tech product or fast-paced startup environment. * Knowledge of legal and regulatory frameworks related to data privacy and digital evidence (e.g., GDPR, CCPA). * Legal/Court evidence handling, presentation and implementation of procedures      What Makes Cloudflare Special? We are looking for a Principal Engineer who is equal parts architect, threat analyst, and disruptor — someone who doesn't just build systems but fundamentally rethinks how we detect, analyze, and neutralize threats across one of the world's largest networks. This is not a role that lives in a single team or a single codebase. You will operate across the full breadth of Cloudflare Products, diving into whatever problem is most critical — whether that's redesigning a detection pipeline in Kubernetes, deploying a new mitigation capability at the edge via Workers, building agentic AI workflows that automate analyst tradecraft, or architecting a data system that processes trillions of signals per day. You will be the person teams turn to when the problem is ambiguous, the architecture is complex, and the adversary is sophisticated. DESIRABLE SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE: * 15+ years of cyber security experience with an emphasis on building systems to present adversarial trends and techniques both as an internal reputational service and a product facing analyst service. * 10+ years of experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems in production, with demonstrated expertise in complex system architecture and design. * Deep, hands-on proficiency in Go and/or TypeScript, with production experience deploying services in Kubernetes and on edge computing platforms (e.g., Cloudflare Workers, D1/SQLite-at-the-edge). * Subject matter expertise in threat intelligence, adversarial analysis, or detection engineering — you understand the Cyber Kill Chain, know how to track TTPs, and can reason about attacker infrastructure at scale. * Proven ability to work across organizational boundaries and lead technical initiatives that span multiple teams, codebases, and problem domains simultaneously. * Experience with AI-assisted development and agentic AI workflows. * Strong architectural judgment — you know when to build, when to refactor, and when to burn it down and start over. * Experience designing and operating critical data pipelines (Kafka, Temporal, or similar) and working with SQL databases (PostgreSQL) and caching layers (Redis) at scale. * Excellent communication skills — you can explain a complex system design to a VP and debug a race condition with a junior engineer in the same afternoon. * A track record as a disruptor: you have examples of fundamentally improving how a team, system, or organization operates, not just shipping features. To help fulfill this mission, we are seeking a talented REACT Analyst / Consultant to join us in growing our Cloudforce One REACT organization. In this role, you will be instrumental in building a proactive and threat intelligence-driven approach to protecting Cloudflare and its customers from sophisticated and evolving threat actors. As a REACT Consultant, you will respond to customer security incidents across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments. This position requires an innovative, self-starting, and detail-oriented problem solver with a passion for analyzing, tracking, and triaging malicious activity. You will engage with customers at all levels—including Executive, VP, Director, and engineering levels—serving an integral role alongside forensic analysts, threat researchers, detection engineers, and malware analysts to detect, isolate, and mitigate threats. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. INCIDENT RESPONSE & ACTIVE EDGE MITIGATION * Active Edge Mitigation: Execute immediate defensive maneuvers at the Cloudflare edge to protect customer availability. This includes deploying custom WAF rules, implementing L3/L4 DDoS shunning, and performing real-time traffic filtering to neutralize attacks before they reach the customer's origin. * Support Full IR Lifecycle Management: Support and execute the end-to-end incident response process for clients (investigation, containment, remediation, and recovery). Review technical deliverables and coordinate sessions with customer stakeholders to ensure high-quality service and resolution. * Incident Remediation: Build a strong understanding of targeted attacks to create and execute customized tactical and strategic remediation plans for compromised organizations. 2. DIRECT CUSTOMER CONTAINMENT & THREAT ISOLATION * Ransomware & BEC: Identify and isolate infected hosts, revoke compromised sessions/identities, and stop data exfiltration within the customer's infrastructure. * Insider Threats & Nation-State Attacks: Track unauthorized lateral movement, identify sophisticated persistent backdoors, correlate threat actor activity across the environment, and execute containment to preserve evidence while neutralizing the adversary. 3. FORENSICS, ENGINEERING & AI ANALYSIS * Forensic Evidence & Chain of Custody: Conduct initial evidence preservation (logs, volatile memory, disk images) within customer environments according to forensic standards to support legal, regulatory, or insurance requirements. * Crisis Solution Development: Create and enhance client-facing Crisis & Incident Response solutions based on industry standards (ISO 27001, NIST, CIS). Advance customer cyber readiness by identifying opportunities for process optimization in monitoring, detection, and response. * AI-Leveraged Analysis: Utilize AI-powered security platforms to synthesize massive telemetry sets, automate log summarization, and accelerate the identification of emerging threat patterns during active customer engagements. * Technical Documentation & Reporting: Prepare high-fidelity incident reports, forensic findings, and client communications. DESIRABLE SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE * Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Cybersecurity, a related technical field, or equivalent training/practical experience. * Experience: 3+ years of overall experience in cybersecurity, including 2+ years of dedicated Incident Response / Digital Forensics experience, and 1+ years in a customer-facing role. * OS & Cloud Environments: In-depth understanding of Windows operating systems and general knowledge of Unix, Linux, and Mac environments. Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS, Azure, O365, Google Cloud, Cloudflare) and cloud IR methodologies. * Network Forensic Analysis: Strong technical knowledge of common network protocols and design patterns (TCP/IP, HTTPS, FTP, SFTP, SSH, RDP, CIFS/SMB, NFS).
