We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to join our team in London. In this role, you’ll lead and grow a team of infrastructure engineers building and operating the event streaming systems that power business-critical workflows across Deliveroo, DoorDash and Wolt. This role is based in our London office with a hybrid setup, typically 3 days in the office. Get to know our Engineering team - what drives us, how we work, and what you can expect. WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING You’ll be joining the Event Streaming Systems team within the broader Storage organisation. The team builds and operates highly reliable, scalable and efficient streaming infrastructure, including Kafka, Event Streaming abstractions (internally called EventBus) and future event streaming platform technologies. These systems support Tier-0 workflows and are foundational to how engineering teams build reliable, event-driven products at scale. Here’s what your day-to-day might look like: * Lead and grow a team of engineers responsible for Kafka, EventBus, and event streaming infrastructure. * Drive delivery of key streaming platform initiatives, balancing reliability, scalability, and long-term evolution. * Partner with infrastructure and engineering leaders across Deliveroo, DoorDash, and Wolt to define streaming strategy and roadmap. * Improve the scalability, observability, automation, and reliability of Tier-0 streaming systems. * Foster operational excellence through incident management, postmortems, and continuous improvement. * Hire, mentor, and develop engineers while building a high-performing, inclusive team. * Contribute to architecture, design reviews, and technical decision-making for large-scale distributed systems. WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO THRIVE Our ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in some of these areas and curiosity to grow in others: * Experience leading streaming infrastructure, platform or distributed systems engineering teams. * Experience with Kafka or large-scale event streaming systems. * Strong technical depth in scalable production systems, with a track record of operating high-reliability infrastructure. * Experience building or operating event streaming, storage, data infrastructure or similar large-scale distributed platforms. * Proven ability to hire, mentor and grow engineers, while creating clear expectations and a strong team culture. * Demonstrated ability to drive execution across complex, cross-functional technical initiatives with multiple stakeholders. * A strong operational excellence mindset, including incident leadership, observability, reliability engineering and continuous improvement. * Clear communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence technical and organisational direction across teams. NICE TO HAVE * Experience with technologies such as Redpanda, Pulsar, WarpStream or AutoMQ. * Experience operating Tier-0 infrastructure, multi-region systems or globally distributed platforms. * Background in storage systems, platform infrastructure, data infrastructure or open source distributed systems. In this role, you’ll lead and grow a full-stack team, building the back-office workspace at the centre of how customer and courier support is delivered across Deliveroo, DoorDash and Wolt. Get to know our Engineering team - what drives us, how we work, and what you can expect. What You’ll Be Doing You’ll be joining the Agent Experience team, which sits at the centre of unifying support across Deliveroo, DoorDash and Wolt. The team builds the back-office workspace used by over 30,000 support agents globally, running on an in-house chat platform that handles tens of millions of conversations a month. It’s replacing a fragmented stack of legacy tools with a single, modern platform - a real-time inbox, multi-channel communications, supervisor tooling, a centralised resolutions toolkit, and an AI layer that automates routine work - owned end-to-end, from frontend to backend, as all three brands are migrated onto one system. The work is high-scale, real-time and business-critical: every second saved for an agent and every screen simplified makes a real difference to the customers and couriers waiting for help. Here’s what your day-to-day might look like: * Lead, coach and grow a team of ~7–8 frontend, full-stack and backend engineers, and develop their careers. * Scope and break down projects into actionable, shippable work. * Run the team’s rituals - sprint planning, stand-ups and retros. * Track progress, remove blockers, and manage scope and timeline trade-offs. * Represent the team in planning and stakeholder discussions, and align with product, design and other engineering teams on priorities. * Ensure the team maintains high operational excellence - managed technical debt, SRE and healthy on-call. * Hire and grow the team, and stay technically engaged through architecture and design discussions. WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO THRIVE Our ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in some of these areas and curiosity to grow in others: * 6+ years of commercial engineering experience, including 2+ years leading a team. * A full-stack background with primary depth in backend development (e.g. Go, Python or Node.js), and willingness to contribute to the frontend (e.g. React) when the team needs it. * A T-shaped profile - broad across technologies rather than specialised in a single one. * A heavy adopter of AI, both for productivity and for engineering (e.g. using Claude Code to increase the team’s delivery velocity). * Strong communication skills, and comfort operating in an ambiguous, dynamic environment where operational priorities shift. * A track record of running complex projects that span and affect multiple engineering teams. * Experience hiring, recruiting and mentoring engineers, and setting clear expectations and a strong team culture. * Low ego and a strong sense of ownership - team-first, able to balance servant leadership with making the tough calls. NICE TO HAVE * Experience with infrastructure and cloud tooling (e.g. Kubernetes, AWS, Datadog). * An SRE background - on-call experience, SLOs and alerts management. * Experience building internal tooling, operational platforms or other complex, data-dense product UIs. This is a hybrid role, with 3 days per week on-site. In this role, you’ll lead a team of Analytics Engineers embedded in a key business domain, owning the pipelines, models and metrics that power day-to-day decisions and building the data foundations your stakeholders rely on. ABOUT THE ANALYTICS ENGINEERING ORG Analytics Engineering is a core pillar of Deliveroo’s Analytics organisation, alongside Data Science. With over 70 Analytics Engineers across the UK and India, we are embedded directly within product and business domains, owning the pipelines, models and metrics that power decision-making at scale: from self-serve AI-enabled analytics and experimentation through to executive reporting and strategic planning. The discipline is evolving fast. With new tooling changing how we work, we are shifting from building data pipelines to building AI first data products, developing rich semantic and data context layers and empowering self-serve data users. This role leads that work across a defined business domain, directly managing a team of Analytics Engineers and helping shape AE standards, culture and direction across the wider org. WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING * Directly lead a team of Analytics Engineers embedded in a defined business domain, owning their performance, development and wellbeing * Own the AE roadmap for your domain, identifying the highest-leverage investments, prioritising competing requests, and building the case for them with your business and product stakeholders * Drive a data products mindset across your estate: clear ownership, SLAs, observability and data contracts built into how your team works by default * Maintain strong technical involvement: reviewing data models and SQL, guiding architectural decisions, and stepping in hands-on when your team needs unblocking * Contribute to AE-wide decisions on tooling, standards and process, helping shape how Analytics Engineering works at Deliveroo beyond your immediate team * Build a high-performing, inclusive team culture by giving regular and actionable feedback, handling performance and motivation challenges, and running effective rituals * Partner with Recruiting to hire strong, diverse AE talent into your team WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO THRIVE ESSENTIAL * Experience in an Analytics Engineering, BI Engineering, or Data Engineering role, with strong, hands-on SQL foundations you still draw on regularly * Proven experience managing a team of ICs, with a track record of developing people, giving hard feedback, and handling typical team situations independently * Demonstrated ability to own a technical roadmap for a domain area and deliver against it with measurable business impact * Strong grounding across the modern AE stack (cloud data warehousing, transformation tooling, data modelling, and data quality practices), with the ability to engage credibly on technical decisions and unblock your team * Comfortable engaging and influencing at senior business and product level, with experience aligning analytics investment to domain priorities NICE TO HAVE * Experience in a marketplace, e-commerce, grocery or retail analytics context * Familiarity with semantic and metrics layer tooling, or Python for data automation and pipeline work * Exposure to AI for Data, including agentic AI methods, semantic layers, or AI-assisted analytics workflows * Experience contributing to analytics ways of working: documentation standards, peer review processes, onboarding, and knowledge sharing WHY JOIN US?
