LEAD SOFTWARE ENGINEER - DEVELOPER EXPERIENCE (DEVEX) IN SHORT At On, we believe technology should move as fast as a runner. We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer to join the Developer Experience (DevEx) team. In this hands-on role, you will build the platform that empowers dozens of technology teams to build, ship, and operate services effortlessly. You will be involved in architecting and building our "Golden Path," ensuring that speed, safety, and reliability are baked into every developer's workflow. YOUR MISSION * Help Engineer the Golden Path: Design and implement highly automated CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) and common templating (Typescript/Node) systems that allow a developer to go from "idea" to "production-ready service" in minutes. * GraphQL Infrastructure: Act as a core contributor to our central Apollo GraphQL API Gateway. You will help manage the supergraph composition, runtime stability, and schema governance standards to ensure a consistent contract for all consumers. * Help to Build the Internal Developer Platform (IDP): Help develop our Cloud Abstraction Layer and Developer Portal. This includes building self-service tools, CLIs, and service catalogs that reduce cognitive load for engineers. * SRE & Observability: Integrate "secure-by-default" practices and robust observability into the platform. You’ll build dashboards (NewRelic) and monitoring patterns that provide teams with deep insights into their service health. * Technical Excellence & Advocacy: Write high-quality documentation, help with code reviews and advocate for DevEx best practices across the organization. * Friction Reduction: Actively hunt for bottlenecks in the software development lifecycle. Whether it's a slow build or a complex deployment process, you'll be involved in fixing it. YOUR TECHNICAL STORY * Product Thinking: You treat internal developers as your customers. You listen to their pain points and iterate on the platform based on real-world feedback. * Infrastructure as Code: You are comfortable with Terraform and Kubernetes (GCP experience is a plus), treating infrastructure with the same rigor as application code. * Automation Mindset: You are passionate about CI/CD (GitHub Actions) and building developer tooling (CLIs, SDKs, or Portals). * AI-Augmented Engineering Workflows: You leverage (or at least have an active interest in) the latest agentic coding tools to 10x your productivity, blending deep technical principles with AI-assisted workflows. As a power user of AI, you orchestrate complex builds and bypass boilerplate to deliver robust, scalable code at pace, ensuring our TypeScript/Node.js environment remains lean and efficient (experience in other tech stacks will be considered). * Architectural API Design: Experience in crafting robust API contracts with a focus on GraphQL Federation; familiarity with the Apollo tech stack is highly regarded. * Data-Driven: You understand DORA metrics and DevEx signals, using them to measure the success of the tools you build. This is a brand new role created to bridge the gap between application development and platform engineering - creating a more consistent, scalable developer experience as we continue to evolve our platform strategy. You will focus on building for engineers - creating and shaping the templates, standards and foundations used across services. Alongside this, you will have the opportunity to contribute to emerging platform initiatives, including work that supports AI enablement across the engineering organisation.  This is a high-impact role with real scope to influence how engineering works at Liberis!   What you'll get to do in the role: * Own and evolve the service template library for .NET, Node.js, and Python — covering project scaffolding, dependency management, containerisation, local dev setup, and production configuration. Templates are generated, not forked, so keeping them current and opinionated matters. * Build and maintain CI/CD pipeline templates in GitHub Actions and/or Azure DevOps, covering build, test, security scanning, and deployment — consistent across stacks and reusable across teams. * Define and ship observability standards: structured logging, distributed tracing, and alerting integrated into service templates so every new service is production-ready from day one. * Work hands-on with Datadog, incident.io, and/or GCP/Azure-native logging and monitoring tooling to build the platform-level observability layer teams plug into. * Contribute to our thinking on a potential Azure-to-GCP migration — helping assess what changes for developer tooling and service templates and building proof-of-concept work that informs the decision. * Partner with product engineers to understand where developer experience breaks down — slow pipelines, confusing templates, missing runbooks — and fix the root causes, not the symptoms. * Lead technical decisions on platform tooling: evaluate new tools, write ADRs, and drive adoption of improvements across multiple engineering teams. * Mentor engineers in the Cloud Platform team and act as a go-to resource for product engineers getting to grips with platform tooling.   The interview process: * Screening call with Chess (Internal Recruiter) (30 mins) * Video interview with the Hiring Manager (45 mins) * In person code pairing interview with a member of Engineering team (1 hour) * Video interview with the wider Liberis team (1 hour)   What we think you'll need: * Proficient in at least one of .NET (C#), Node.js and Python — able to build, configure, and template production-grade services in each. * Strong GCP experience (Azure experience is nice to have) * Hands-on experience designing reusable CI/CD pipeline templates — GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps — consistent across stacks and teams. * Comfortable with containerisation (Docker) and deployment on Kubernetes or Cloud Run. * Observability experience with at least one of: Datadog, incident.io, or cloud-native logging and monitoring (GCP Cloud Operations or Azure Monitor). * Infrastructure-as-code with Terraform. * A proven track record of driving adoption — building things engineers use, writing docs that get read.   Career development is really important to us here at Liberis, with progression opportunities for both individual contributors and people managers. About the team The Developer Experience team owns the internal platform that every SumUp engineer touches daily: CI/CD pipelines, observability tooling, our developer portal, and an emerging AI platform. It's a high-visibility role: the work you lead directly shapes the productivity of hundreds of engineers across the company. We're looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to take full ownership of this domain, grow a team of seven engineers, and define what great developer experience looks like at SumUp as we scale.
