Physical or digital, there is only one reality. And it’s the reality NavVis empowers people to build better. THE OPPORTUNITY At NavVis, we build the world's most advanced mobile mapping systems - hardware & software platforms that capture spatial reality with extraordinary precision. The quality and reliability of every scan we deliver depends on the sensors we calibrate and ship with our products. We treat calibration as a core pillar of NavVis' competitive differentiation. The team works across an exceptionally broad technical surface: sensor physics, camera and LiDAR geometry, IMU modelling, production processes, evaluation infrastructure, cloud and local services, and an emerging intersection with ML-based perception. We are looking for an experienced Team Lead to head this team within the Mapping & Perception department. You will combine deep sensor expertise with genuine people leadership - setting technical direction, developing your engineers, and driving the calibration product forward with the ambition to build world-class devices. This is a role with high strategic ownership, close ties to device production, and strong cross-team connections. If you care deeply about data quality, automation and smoothly running production processes and want to lead a team that is as knowledgeable about our sensors as the vendors who build them - this role is for you. HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT * Lead, mentor and grow a team of calibration software engineers - setting technical direction, running regular 1:1s, supporting career development, and owning team performance together with the department lead. * Own the calibration end to end: the software, the calibration process, and the documentation - from early-stage methodology design through production rollout and ongoing supervision of the calibration process for cameras, LiDARs, IMUs and other sensors. * Drive the strategic direction for accuracy, repeatability and scalability of calibration - pushing toward less human-dependent processes, greater automation, and faster iteration cycles from development to production. * Develop deep understanding of the sensors NavVis uses by building team knowledge of sensor design, behaviour, and limitations that rivals the vendors themselves. * Serve as the primary technical interface between the calibration team, the production floor, and adjacent engineering teams while ensuring rapid feedback loops and smooth cross-functional collaboration. * Anticipate and shape how calibration evolves alongside NavVis hardware: new sensors and new form factors, ML-based pipelines, and automation platforms. * Identify, escalate, and resolve issues in calibration processes and tooling in close collaboration with the production teams, translating their feedback into software improvements. * Contribute hands-on to the codebase where it matters - this role carries a meaningful expert component alongside its leadership responsibilities. WHAT WILL HELP YOU SUCCEED IN THE ROLE * Master's degree or PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, or a closely related field. * 7-10 years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on sensor systems - ideally in calibration, sensor fusion, or a closely adjacent domain such as SLAM or machine perception. * Hands-on experience working in environments where software engineering intersects with physical device production or hardware integration. * Direct experience calibrating cameras, LiDARs and/or IMUs, including knowledge of the underlying geometric models (intrinsics, extrinsics). * Strong C++ development skills in a production codebase, and solid Python for tooling, scripting and automation. * Demonstrated experience leading or technically mentoring a software team, including people development, task coordination and cross-functional stakeholder communication. * Excellent communication skills in English - written and verbal - with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences including production and engineering management. * A deep passion for sensors * Proficiency in Linux Would be an added benefit: * Experience with C++ libraries such as Ceres, Eigen, OpenCV, PCL, ROS, or Boost * Background in modelling and solving 2D/3D geometry optimization problems. * Familiarity with SLAM systems and the relationship between calibration quality and mapping performance. * Exposure to ML-based perception techniques and their implications for sensor and calibration design. * Track record of contributing to or maintaining open-source software. HOW WE WILL KNOW WE ARE A PERFECT MATCH Your recruiting partner for this role is Rina (she/her). You can expect to go through a screening call, and up to 5 rounds of interviews, covering your technical depth in sensor systems and calibration, your leadership approach and people development philosophy, and how you collaborate across teams. We want to understand what drives you, share what drives us, and explore how we can grow together. HOW WE WILL KEEP YOU SMILING * It's important to take a break from work! We offer 30 days of paid time off per year * Affordable access to a vast network of fitness and wellness facilities through EGYM Wellpass subsidy * Deutschlandticket subsidy to support sustainable travel using public transport * We offer flexible working hours and a hybrid work setup, enabling you to plan your work around your life, and not your life around work! * We offer full visa and relocation support for international candidates * An attractive bike leasing model through JobRad, in line with our commitment towards sustainable mobility * A competitive compensation package that values the skills and experience you bring * Up to 4000 EUR employee referral bonus * Financial support for local language classes to help you in your journey of integrating into the culture! ABOUT US STARK is a new kind of defence technology company revolutionizing the way autonomous systems are deployed across multiple domains. We design, develop and manufacture high-performance unmanned systems that are software-defined, mass-scalable, and cost-effective. This provides our operators with a decisive edge in highly contested environments. We're focused on delivering deployable, high-performance systems - not future promises. In a time of rising threats, STARK is bolstering the technological edge of NATO Allies and their Partners to deter aggression and defend Europe - today. ABOUT THE TEAM Minerva is STARK's command and control software — the brain that connects operators to autonomous systems across multiple domains in real time. The Minerva team is a small, senior software group based in Berlin and Munich, working directly with our systems and hardware teams to build mission-critical C2 capabilities deployed in active operational environments. We move fast, ship real software, and operate under constraints most engineers never encounter — low-bandwidth networks, air-gapped devices, high-stakes decision loops. There is no room for abstraction for its own sake. Everything we build ends up in the hands of real operators in the field. YOUR MISSION As a Sensors Systems Engineer, you sit at the critical intersection of hardware and software. You are the architect of our platforms' perception systems, leading the selection, integration, and optimization of the "eyes and ears" of our UAVs—ranging from high-definition EO/IR gimbals to Radar, Lidar, and IMU systems. At STARK, we are pushing the absolute limits of hardware. This is a deeply hands-on role; you will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of a sensor, from probing I2C buses and debugging electrical interfaces to writing the high-performance C++ drivers that feed our autonomy stack. RESPONSIBILITIES * Hardware-Software Integration: Own the end-to-end integration of EO/IR cameras, gimbals, Radar, and Lidar. You will bridge the gap between physical mounting/wiring and the software nodes that control them. * Low-Level Development: Design and implement drivers and ROS2 nodes. You will work directly with hardware protocols including I2C, SPI, CAN, Serial, and Ethernet (RTSP/UDP). * Time Synchronization & Data Management: Solve the "hard" problems of temporal synchronization across distributed hardware (using PTP, PPS, or hardware triggering) to ensure all sensor streams are perfectly aligned for fusion. * Precision Calibration: Develop and execute rigorous intrinsic and extrinsic calibration routines to ensure the platform’s sensor suite is spatially and logically unified. * System Optimization: Profile and tune sensor pipelines to squeeze maximum performance out of resource-constrained embedded compute (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson). * Field Evaluation: Support flight tests and field deployments, diagnosing hardware-level issues in real-time and iterating quickly on design improvements to ensure mission success. QUALIFICATIONS * Technical Background: A degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. * The "Hybrid" Skillset: You are equally comfortable with hardware diagnostic tools (oscilloscopes, multimeters) and modern software development environments. * Programming: Strong proficiency in C++ and Python, specifically for hardware interfacing and embedded systems. Experience with ROS2 is a big advantage. * Protocol Fluency: Hands-on experience with I2C, SPI, CAN, and Ethernet-based sensor communication. * Critical Thinking: A track record of addressing complex design trade-offs—balancing sensor range and resolution against weight, thermal, and power constraints. * Proactive Problem Solver: A self-driven engineer who thrives on troubleshooting complex systems at the boundary of hardware and code. A Note on Our Process: At STARK, we value critical thinking, grit, and the ability to learn over a perfect checklist. If you are a talented engineer who loves building complex systems and is passionate about sensors, but you don’t hit every single bullet point above, we still want to hear from you. We are building a multidisciplinary team where diverse perspectives lead to more resilient technology.
