Which team will you be joining?
A Primer payment is worth so much more than a regular payment.
In the Orchestration team we build the engine that powers intelligent, seamless, and reliable payments — across any provider,
method, or market. We own the full orchestration layer: routing decisions, fallback logic, and the smart infrastructure that makes
every payment perform at its best.
This team covers everything from checkout and payment processing through to tokenization, authentication, fallback logic,
developer tooling, and workflows.
As a Backend Engineer L3 you will work within a small, high-calibre team of engineers who own their work end to end. You'll report
into the Engineering Manager for Orchestration and contribute to systems that handle real payment volume at scale.

We're building a culture where people can do their best work and be proud of the impact they have. You'll be working with people
who are mission-driven, smart, and reflective, and who are genuinely invested in building exceptional products and delivering
success for our merchants.
We work remotely, and have done since day one. We believe that building a successful, profitable company goes beyond proximity. We
invest in our relationships through great remote working practices and thoughtfully designed face-to-face time, including
workations, our annual company retreat, and access to co-working spaces across most major cities.
The work is challenging. Scaleups are a challenge, and building category-defining products is a challenge. But there's a
meaningful difference between a challenge and a struggle. At Primer, the right challenge comes with the right support: strong
onboarding, a collaborative environment, and a team that is genuinely invested in your success. It's never something you face
alone.

this or other roles.

Watch our showcase > Read up on our $100m Series C Learn more about our culture > Which team will you be joining? The merchant experience is only as good as the platform behind it. In the Account Experience team we build and own the full platform that merchants use to interact with Primer — from initial setup through to day-to-day operations, and increasingly through Primer AI Companion as a first-class interface. This team covers: Primer Companion, Merchant Account Setup, Monitors, Workflows, Auditing, and cross-cutting platform concerns that keep the merchant experience cohesive and consistent. As a Backend Engineer L3 you will work within a small, high-calibre team of engineers who own their work end to end. You'll report into the Engineering Manager for Account Experience and contribute to systems that power the merchant platform at scale. What will you be doing? * Take full ownership of backend features from scoping through to production, keeping the team informed on progress, risks, and blockers without being chased. * Design and deliver backend services that handle real payment volume, with a strong focus on reliability, performance, and correctness at scale. * Contribute to architecture discussions, bring proposals to the engineering council, and advocate for clear service contracts and simple, maintainable system design. * Monitor the production impact of your own work, identify issues early, and drive incidents to resolution when they arise. * Write code that your peers consider high quality: production-ready, well-considered on error paths, and built with the next engineer in mind. * Actively contribute to Primer's engineering standards, raise concerns when you see gaps, and help the team hold a consistent bar. * Collaborate with engineers across the Account Experience team on scoping sessions, code reviews, and technical decisions that shape how the system evolves. What we're looking for * Solid backend engineering experience, with the ability to take ambiguous requirements and deliver working, production-ready software with minimal direction. * Strong grasp of distributed systems fundamentals: you understand why things fail in production and you build accordingly. * Comfortable working with REST APIs and the patterns that make services reliable, observable, and easy to reason about. * Experience owning work end to end — not just writing code but thinking about monitoring, rollout, and what happens after deployment. * The confidence to contribute to architecture discussions, ask the right questions, and push back when a design decision doesn't make sense. * Experience in a payments, fintech, or infrastructure context is a plus, though depth of engineering matters more than the specific industry. You may not like it here * Primer is remote-first. There is no office to fall back on when you want context, direction, or a sense of how things are going. You need to be good at operating without those signals. * We do not over-engineer our processes. If something is unclear, you're expected to resolve that ambiguity yourself rather than wait for someone to remove it. * The Orchestration codebase is not simple. You will inherit technical complexity and will be expected to deal with it thoughtfully, not just work around it. ✅ A TYPICAL INTERVIEW PROCESS * An initial intro call with a Talent Partner * An interview with the Hiring Manager * Challenge Stage - Contextualised to the role * A final, values-alignment interview WHAT'S THE CULTURE LIKE AT PRIMER? The subsidiaries of Tripadvisor, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRIP), include a portfolio of travel brands and businesses, including Tripadvisor, Viator, and TheFork. And with 400,000+ travel experiences to explore—everything from simple tours to extreme adventures (and everything in between) —making memories that will last a lifetime has never been easier. About the Role We’re looking for a product-focused Software Engineer II to join our fast-growing Experiences Engineering team. This is a full-stack role, leveraging Java, SQL, React, AWS and AI tools. It’s ideal for mid-level engineers who enjoy solving complex problems, shipping frequently, and working in a modern cloud environment. You’ll play a key role in building high-impact features that power millions of traveler experiences globally. We embrace flexibility in where and how work gets done and also value meaningful in-person moments to connect and collaborate. You can expect a remote-first working model with periodic in-person gatherings at your closest office for team connection, planning, or other key moments. This position is open to candidates based within a commutable distance (generally up to 1.5 hours) of one of our office hubs in London, Oxford, Krakow or Lisbon. What You’ll Do * Drive Impact: Connect your engineering work directly to traveler value by owning features from design to deployment. * Shape the Product: Partner with product, design, and data teams to influence what we build, helping to define specifications and find the most efficient path to success. * Collaborate & Mentor: Review code, provide thoughtful feedback, and coach less experienced engineers to maintain a high bar for quality. * Innovate with AI: Use agentic AI as a daily partner to plan approaches, automate routine tasks, and focus your energy on solving more complex technical challenges. * Champion Operational Health: Take hands-on ownership of system reliability by building monitoring dashboards, managing alerts and support cases, and fixing underlying bugs to continuously improve service resilience and eliminate operational toil. * Build for Quality: Design and implement clean, maintainable solutions with a focus on performance, security, and automated testing. Skills & Experience We typically look for a minimum of 2-3 years’ experience, following a Bachelor’s degree or above in Comp Science or a related field. * Full-Stack Mindset: Experience developing web apps, including proficiency in a modern backend language (e.g., Java, C#, Go, Python) and familiarity with relational databases. * Problem Solving: A strong grasp of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms) and the ability to apply them to real-world distributed systems. * Data-Driven: A habit of using operational data and experiment results to validate that your changes had the intended effect. * AI Coding: you are fluent coding with either Cursor or Codex/Claude/Open Code. * Global Mindset: Ability to operate effectively within a global team, communicating clearly about progress and blockers. We don’t expect you to know everything on day one. However, we’re especially interested if you’ve had exposure to AWS, React, or NoSQL databases. More than any specific tool, we value curiosity and the ability to solve problems creatively. We value engineers from different technical backgrounds. You can complete our coding interview exercises in any language of your choice, but need to be open to working within the Java ecosystem when you join! What We Offer * Competitive compensation packages, including base salary, annual bonus, and more. * “Work your way” with flexibility to suit your lifestyle.
