Toast is looking for a hands-on Senior Software Engineer to join the GTM & AI Strategy Engineering team. In this role, you will be a primary builder of 0-to-1 tools designed to revolutionize how our sales teams operate. This isn't about maintaining legacy systems; it’s about writing the code and building the intelligence models that eliminate friction across the Go-To-Market stack. Working under Senior Technical Leader’s guidance, you will be responsible for building and productionizing agentic workflows and RAG pipelines to automate sales processes. You will integrate AI services into the tech stack while maintaining rigorous standards for observability and performance monitoring. A day in the life (Responsibilities)  * Hands-on Execution: Spend the majority of your time "hands-on-keyboard" , architecting and coding high-performance backend services and ML pipelines. * 0-to-1 Development: Build and prototype new internal products from scratch that leverage LLMs and Agentic AI to automate account research, lead prioritization, and complex quoting logic. * Infrastructure Integration: Develop the backend connective tissue between our custom quoting engine, Salesforce, and internal data lakes to ensure a seamless, low-latency end-to-end experience. * Technical Problem Solving: Act as a key executor to solve complex synchronization and architectural challenges across the GTM stack, ensuring systems are scalable and resilient. * Build Great Products: Deliver significant core capabilities that have broad impact; take high-level goals and turn them into sequenced, production-ready code. * Problem Solve: Anticipate shifts in product needs and build flexible, decoupled backend systems that can evolve with our AI strategy. * Deliver Quality: Ensure the reliability of GTM tools by building deep observability into every service you ship. What you'll need to thrive (Requirements) * Deep Backend Expertise: Extensive experience in backend languages (Java, Go, Python) with a track record of building complex, distributed systems. * Applied AI/ML Skills: Practical, hands-on experience building LLM agents in a production environment. * Systems Architecture: Ability to implement event-driven architectures and manage data flow across disparate systems with high integrity. * Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, or a related technical field. This is a greenfield space where the platform and its use cases are being defined together, and the work you do here will be foundational to how Toast uses voice AI for years to come. About this roll* (Responsibilities) As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you'll take ownership of significant projects end-to-end: designing systems, driving execution across the team, and making the technical decisions that shape how the platform grows. You'll work closely with product, engineering, and stakeholders across Toast to turn ambiguous problems into reliable, scalable systems. Here’s what you’ll be doing: * Design, build, deploy, and maintain highly resilient and scalable backend services and applications supporting Toast's Voice AI platform * Lead complex, cross-cutting projects from design through production, owning outcomes and driving alignment across stakeholders * Shape the team's technical direction by making architectural decisions, defining patterns, and reducing complexity for the engineers around you * Build and evolve integrations with AI platforms and internal Toast systems, making pragmatic tradeoffs between speed, reliability, and long-term scalability * Design and implement observability, monitoring, and evaluation frameworks for AI-powered systems, using production data to understand and continuously improve system behavior * Advocate for engineering quality and best practices, raising the bar for the team and the broader organization * Mentor engineers at all levels through code reviews, design feedback, and technical guidance Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements) * 5+ years of experience with object-oriented languages such as Java or Kotlin * Basic familiarity with frontend development on small scale projects * Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field. * Experience shipping complex, mission-critical production services and owning them long-term * Track record of leading multi-person projects end-to-end, from design through rollout * Deep understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and production reliability * Experience building and reasoning about AI-powered systems, including nondeterminism, evaluation strategies, observability, and cost management * Experience developing AI-integrated products or features, with a practical understanding of how to ship and iterate on systems that incorporate LLMs or other AI capabilities * Strong cross-team communication and collaboration skills; able to influence direction without formal authority * Actively uses AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) in day-to-day development * Experience with voice or conversational AI platforms is a plus, but not required   Our Tech Stack Our backend services follow a microservice architecture written in Kotlin and Java using DropWizard, running on AWS (DynamoDB, RDS, Lambda). We store data in sharded Postgres databases and have our own platform for user management, canary deployments, and load balancing. We are looking for a motivated, energetic candidate with experience creatively solving data complexities of various sizes and levels of cleanliness - with the ultimate goal of enabling analytics engineers, data engineers, analysts, product managers, and peers throughout Toast to make data-informed decisions.   A day in the life (Responsibilities) * Collaborate with domain teams to implement a hub & spoke data architecture * Develop the core Analytics layer in our data warehouse that serves as the hub, defining complex business logic in SQL and supplying relevant business context * Build an AI-ready semantic layer that is extendable across business domains * Partner with business stakeholders and our product team to understand their data analytics needs, and ensure those needs are met by our Analytics layer * Work closely with the data engineering team to ensure scalability across the platform * Provide technical mentorship and leadership to team members   What you'll need to thrive (Requirements) * 6+ years experience in Business Intelligence, Analytics, and/or Data Engineering roles. * 4+ years experience with developing data modeling strategies. * 3+ years experience developing in dbt.  * Highly proficient in SQL. You can interpret and optimize queries, for performance, written by other analysts and engineers. * Thrive in a fast-paced work environment and comfortable operating under ambiguity. You are up to the challenge of designing standards and best practices from the ground up, and love collaborating with colleagues to solve complex problems. * Bachelor's degree in an advanced quantitative field (or equivalent experience); such as mathematics, economics/finance, computer science, or physical science.
