Payments is a core part of Airbnb’s business and guest/Host experience, operating across global markets, currencies, payment
methods, regulatory environments, and partner integrations. We build and operate Airbnb’s in-house payments platform to support
global scale, reliability, compliance, and product flexibility. The team works closely with Product, Design, Data Science,
Finance, Legal, Compliance, Operations, and external payment partners to deliver trusted payment experiences for our community.
As an Engineering Manager on Payments, you will lead one or more engineering teams responsible for building and operating critical
payments systems. You will set clear team priorities, create an environment where engineers and technical leads can do their best
work, and partner cross-functionally to deliver high-quality outcomes for Airbnb's guests, Hosts, and business.
You will be expected to navigate complex and ambiguous problems, balance near-term execution with long-term platform health, and
help define a roadmap that supports scale, reliability, regulatory needs, and product innovation. You will partner closely with
technical leads to make sound engineering decisions, reduce systemic technical debt, and uphold operational excellence for systems
that move money at global scale.

About the role As an Engineering Manager, you will drive the successful delivery and execution of projects within your teams. You will manage end-to-end technical planning, ensuring that product requirements are translated into actionable tasks, while orchestrating collaboration between various stakeholders, including engineers, product managers, QA, and UX. This role requires a deep understanding of software design and development and the ability to plan, execute, and deliver product features in a timely and predictable manner. You will also be responsible for maintaining high technical standards, managing team bandwidth, and ensuring project milestones are met with efficiency and accuracy. To succeed in this role, you should have * Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field. * 8-10 years of experience as a Software Developer, Software Engineer, or in a similar hands-on technical role. * 5+ years of strong experience building production systems using Java and Spring Boot. * Minimum 3 years of proven engineering leadership experience managing high-performing teams. * Solid grasp of Agile methodologies, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, and iterative delivery. * Demonstrated ability to translate complex product requirements into well-structured EPICs, user stories, and tasks. * Strong backend engineering expertise; exposure to frontend technologies is a plus. * Experience with project planning and tracking tools to visualize and manage delivery timelines. * Familiarity with engineering, product health metrics, and monitoring tools to drive data-informed decisions. * Hands-on capability to debug complex production issues, lead incident response, and conduct blameless RCA. * Good understanding of modern deployment practices, including CI/CD pipelines, release management, and associated metrics. * Ability to drive alignment across cross-functional stakeholders, both technical and non-technical. * Excellent risk management, dependency tracking, and stakeholder communication skills. * Proven track record of improving team velocity, delivery predictability, and engineering excellence.
