We are looking for a highly technical, creative, hands-on, and impact-focused Senior Software Engineer to join our growing Ads team. Our team is revolutionizing the way users interact with our platform through innovative ad formats (including Quests). These products enable us to generate revenue by building a win-win-win suite of distribution tools for game developers, players, and Discord. What you'll be doing * Design, build and maintain new Ads products from the backend to frontend. Collaborate with both engineers on and off the team - from Revenue Infrastructure, to Core Tech, to Machine Learning, to Data Science. * Be a strategic partner with engineering, product, and cross functional leadership in designing, developing and scaling digital advertising features that drive revenue growth and enhance user engagement. * Architect simple and maintainable systems to enable us to launch quickly and iterate while sustaining a high product and technical quality bar. * Model strong ownership by acting autonomously when possible and looping in others to build confidence on critical questions. Introduce coding and operational best practices to the team; always be learning & teaching. * Own projects end to end — you’ll be responsible for working with Product and other stakeholders to refine requirements, creating technical designs and specs, implementing changes, and seeing projects through to launch and maintenance. Relocation assistance may be available. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $196,000 to $220,500 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. We classify content, route reports, make and audit enforcement decisions, and build the tools our operations partners use to handle everything automation doesn't. The work is a mix of deep backend infrastructure, AI-driven automation, and tight collaboration with the people who do nuanced review. As Discord grows into new surfaces like commerce and ads, the platform we build matters more. We're hiring a Director of Engineering to lead Safety Infrastructure Engineering at Discord. The org is roughly 20 engineers across two teams with two EM direct reports. You'll report to the senior Director of Safety and work closely with T&S Operations, Safety ML, Safety Product, Legal, Policy, Security, and Core Tech. What you'll do * Lead and grow two engineering teams covering our safety backend: the decision platform, classification systems, content understanding, intake and routing pipelines, and observability * Drive the automation roadmap with Safety ML. Decide where AI belongs in the loop, where humans still win, and hold the line on quality, latency, and cost * Own the queue routing and internal tooling our ops teams and vendor partners rely on, and partner with T&S Operations on golden sets, QA, appeals, and evals that turn operational signal into better systems * Consolidate fragmented systems onto infra and set the bar for engineering quality: on-call, incident response, technical review, and ownership * Hire, coach, and grow senior leaders Who you are * 5+ years as a software engineer with a strong backend and distributed systems background, and 5+ years as an EM including 2+ years managing managers. Experience running 20+ engineers through multiple EMs * Strong infrastructure instincts. You can hold your own in architecture discussions on event-driven systems, service migrations, and platform design * Fluent in AI and ML systems enough to partner credibly with an ML org and make good calls about where automation belongs in a decision pipeline * Experienced working closely with ops or human-in-the-loop teams. You get the rhythm of QA, calibration, appeals, and ground-truth work, and build tools that respect the people using them * Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, with a history of partnering effectively across engineering, ML, data science, policy, legal, and product teams. * Practical about throughput, vendor management, and unit economics * An empathetic and experienced recruiter and coach. You’ll be building out a premium Discord for millions of subscribers, focusing on surfaces such as Nitro, shop, boosting, user identity, and more. Your work will be vital in delivering a high-value premium experience, without compromising the core experience for our free users. You’ll be a key driver in generating the revenue that fuels Discord’s mission. In this product engineering role, you'll collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Data Science, Design, Marketing, and other functions to create best-in-class consumer experiences. Your work will cover the full breadth of the technical stack, from backend data modeling, through business logic in APIs, to polished, user-facing interfaces. What You'll Be Doing * Build and improve premium Discord experiences such as Nitro, shop, boosting, user identity, and more. * Own projects end to end by partnering with Product to refine requirements, create technical specs, and work closely with Design to execute and deliver best-in-class user experiences. * Work with a team of full-stack engineers to ship new features across Web, Android, and iOS. * Lead complex initiatives from conception to completion, thriving in ambiguous environments. * Rapidly prototype new features and synthesize insights through experimentation. What you should have * 5+ years of software engineering experience. You’re a key technical contributor to your team and have led sizable projects which have had a big impact on your team’s roadmap. * Full-stack proficiency. You are an expert in React/React Native with a solid grasp of Python backend development. We work primarily in the web (React, TypeScript), mobile (React Native, with a small amount of Kotlin, Objective-C, and Swift), and backend (Python). * Product sense. You maintain a high degree of empathy for your internal and external users, and seek feedback from them about your work. You have an eye for what changes can bring a product from good to great. * Ownership mentality.
