Staff Engineer - Customer Interfaces As a Staff Engineer for Customer Interfaces (CI), you will lead the evolution of the Adyen experience from a traditional dashboard into an intelligent, conversational financial partner. We are looking for a product engineer who can wear an architectural hat to build Agentic Workflows and manage backend orchestration (specifically Tool-use, Chains, and Policy Layers). This role is essential for transforming natural language inputs into authenticated, secure financial operations. What you'll do * Drive Intelligent Experiences: Lead the next generation of conversational UIs at Adyen. You will build Generative UIs that adapt in real-time, moving beyond static dashboards to create streaming, multi-modal experiences where the interface itself is a dynamic partner in the conversation. * Bridge Architecture & Innovation: Act as the primary technical liaison for AI initiatives, coordinating their integration and ensuring operational excellence with teams in different areas and global geographies. You will ensure that "intelligent modules" built in are the gold standard for performance and extensibility. * Zero-Trust for AI: Architect the security layer for conversational interfaces. You will solve the unique challenge of maintaining strict financial data privacy and "Zero Trust" principles while leveraging LLMs and advanced data processing. * Product Strategy & "The Art of the Possible": Partner deeply with the Head of Product to identify high-impact flows. You aren't just implementing designs; you are identifying where intelligent automation can solve "impossible" merchant problems. * Full-Stack Leadership: Own the end-to-end technical lifecycle. From backend services and data pipelines that feed our insights, to the frontend components that render them. * Global Influence: Mentor engineers and coordinate with global hubs to drive technical standards that benefit the entire Adyen ecosystem. WHO YOU ARE * Product-Minded Architect: You think in terms of user outcomes. You have a track record of partnering with product teams to turn ambiguous goals into robust technical reality. * Applied AI Experience: You have experience (or a deep technical interest) in building production-grade interfaces powered by LLMs, including harnesses, policy enforcement, evals, RAG architectures and secure data handling. * Full-Stack Powerhouse: Deeply proficient in Java for secure backend services and TypeScript/React/Vue for complex front-end applications. * Security First: You have a "security-by-design" mindset, particularly regarding the handling of sensitive financial data in modern web environments. * Entrepreneurial & Autonomous: You will be a core member of our growing San Francisco team, where you will be expected to operate with speed and autonomy. Success in this role requires you to effectively navigate and collaborate with a large, global organization. This role's annual base salary range is $258–$367k, plus RSUs. WHO YOU ARE * Must have: * 2+ years of experience in the financial industry, preferably in the banking or fintech sector; * 10+ years of hands-on development experience in a modern engineering environment; * Technical leadership experience, including mentoring engineers and leading an engineering strategy; * Hands-on experience designing and building large scale distributed systems; * Strong background and hands-on experience coding with Java; * Platform mindset. Able to generalize complex processes and create simple and flexible services to support multiple products; * Proactive relationship-builder with strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with diverse stakeholders across cultures; * Self-starter who can identify problems and figure out solutions     This role's annual base salary range is $258–$367k, plus RSUs. In this leadership role, you will be the strategic advocate and driver for ensuring our merchants and partners experience a world-class platform integration. You are instrumental in shaping the developer journey, ensuring that integrating with Adyen is not just easy, but a genuinely superior experience. You will live and breathe our public APIs, SDKs, and documentation. You will identify where developers face friction and then build the tools and shape the content to eliminate it. This is a role for a builder and a communicator who wants to have a direct, tangible impact and redefine the standard of integration for thousands of developers worldwide. Establish best practices for engineering quality, scalability, and performance to support developers at scale. * Advocate for developers by enhancing usability, reliability, and efficiency in integrations, APIs, and tools. * Lead and grow a diverse, inclusive, and high-performing multi-disciplinary team, empowering members through clear expectations and growth opportunities across subdomains such as webhooks, API quality, integration SDKs, developer relations, developer monitoring and tooling etc. * Drive the adoption of common principles and taxonomy to streamline integration processes, improve API consistency, and deliver innovative developer tools, SDKs, and documentation * Be the evangelist in the developer community through conferences, articles, and thought leadership.   Who you are: * A passion for developer experience, integration simplicity, and reliability. * Proven experience as a leader in engineering, ideally with a background in developer-facing products, APIs, or integrations. * Strong public presence with experience as a thought leader, including speaking at conferences, writing articles, and engaging with the developer community. * Exceptional mentorship and team-building skills with a track record of fostering inclusive and high-performing teams. * A customer-centric mindset with a focus on delivering measurable outcomes.   Minimum Qualifications: * 7+ years of technical experience, including significant tenure as a hands-on software engineer.
