ABOUT US At Cambridge Consultants, we believe the future of technology isn't just smart, it has agency. We're moving past passive tools and building human-centred digital services and products: systems that reason, plan, and act around the people who use them. Our work spans autonomous systems at the frontier of biology, sensing, and AI. We hire self-motivated builders, not ticket-takers. If you thrive in highly agile environments, can cut through ambiguity with first-principles thinking, and want to ship things that matter, this is the kind of place where you'll feel at home. ABOUT THE ROLE You'll be working on systems that haven't existed before. Think of an Agentic Coach that navigates the unpredictability of human biology, or the software architecture behind a fully automated Dark Lab. These aren't chatbots waiting for questions. They're proactive systems that maintain world models, interpret human intent, and intervene before the user knows to ask. These systems create genuine impact for clients tackling problems no one else can solve. Building them means designing and wiring agent harnesses: layered architectures that span from sensor-edge reasoning to high-level planning, backed by stateful multi-turn reasoning, persistent per-user memory, and robust evaluation pipelines. You'll work in two directions at once. Internally, you'll use the latest AI tools to sharpen how we build, prototype, and ship. Externally, you'll deliver the breakthrough systems our clients deploy, designed to move from prototype to production at pace. There's no single technology stack. You'll work with agents, multi-agent systems, and the latest generative AI tools, but your work will always be grounded in solid software engineering. Expect to build scalable distributed systems in core languages like Python and TypeScript, leveraging frameworks such as NextJS and Pydantic, agent orchestration tools (LangGraph, CrewAI), and protocols like MCP. You'll deploy on cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) using Docker, Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code, backed by rigorous CI/CD and observability (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus). Due to the clients we work with, you must be eligible for UK security clearance. WHAT WE ASK OF YOU The examples below describe the core domains our AI Engineers own within the Digital Services team. We don't expect every candidate to have mastered all of these, but if you can demonstrate a strong combination of the following, we'd love to hear from you. AI System Architecture: Designing and implementing the logic for autonomous systems, including maintaining world models, integrating multimodal sensing, and building real-time human-machine interaction loops. Infrastructure & Production Engineering: Designing the underlying software for scalable, secure, and observable cloud deployments. You will apply the engineering rigor required to take experimental AI from concept to robust live launch. Rapid Client Prototyping: Driving a demo-first delivery model. You will focus on fast experimentation to actively show tangible value and working software to clients, rather than describing it in slide decks. Domain Translation & Integration: Partnering directly with deep-tech subject matter experts (like biologists and roboticists) to apply software solutions to complex physical constraints. INDICATORS YOU'LL BE A GOOD FIT Applied AI Expertise: You have hands-on experience utilising multi-agent frameworks, long-term memory systems, RAG pipelines, vector/graph databases, and reasoning-loop patterns (such as ReAct and Chain-of-Thought). Core Software Fluency: You possess strong programming skills in Python and TypeScript, coupled with practical experience in cloud engineering, containerisation, and modern DevOps. You know that great agents still require rock-solid software foundations. High Tolerance for Ambiguity: You are energised by uncertainty and shifting targets. You treat changing requirements as a normal part of frontier work, and you know exactly when to ship a rough prototype to learn quickly versus when to slow down for architectural rigour. Cross-Disciplinary Communication: You can seamlessly navigate the gap between code and reality, collaborating with clients, roboticists, and scientists to clearly deliver the "art of the possible." BENEFITS Variety of work: Projects spanning biotech, finance, robotics, and beyond. No two engagements look alike. Continuous learning: A mentoring and learning package shaped by your goals, backed by squad-based knowledge sharing across the company. Engineering autonomy: A free hand in choosing the right tools and processes. We trust your engineering judgement. Access to world-class experts: You'll share a building with biologists, roboticists, electronics engineers, and mathematicians. Few places let you tap that range of expertise on a single project. Hybrid working environment: We're flexible about where you work on a day-to-day basis. We also love the energy of collaborating in person, so we’d love you to be in Cambridge for key meetings. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By submitting an application to Cambridge Consultants, you confirm that the information provided in this application, together with any supporting documentation, is true, complete, and accurate to the best of your knowledge and belief. Morgan, CapitalG, and Lead Edge Capital. Learn more at grafana.com [http://grafana.com] and follow us on LinkedIn [https://www.linkedin.com/company/grafana-labs/] and X [https://twitter.com/grafana]. We’re scaling fast and staying true to what makes us different: an open-source legacy, a global collaborative culture, and a passion for meaningful work. Our team thrives in an innovation-driven environment where transparency, autonomy, and trust fuel everything we do. You may not meet every requirement, and that’s okay. If this role excites you, we’d love you to raise your hand for what could be a truly career-defining opportunity. This is a remote opportunity, and we would be interested in applicants located in Spain, Sweden, UK, Ireland or Germany. SOFTWARE ENGINEER - SYNTHETIC MONITORING The Opportunity: The Synthetic Monitoring squad builds and operates Grafana Cloud Synthetic Monitoring [https://grafana.com/products/cloud/synthetic-monitoring/], used by teams globally to proactively verify that their critical user journeys, APIs, and services work as expected - before their customers notice they don't. Synthetic Monitoring is a multi-tenant distributed system implemented in Go, running on Kubernetes across all major cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure), executing billions of synthetic tests each month from probe locations around the world and from customer-operated private probes. The product is in a scale phase, and our focus is on making Synthetic Monitoring a deeply integrated part of Grafana Cloud: connecting checks to real user experience and cross-product investigation workflows, making check results a trusted signal for AI-assisted workflows, and enabling large organizations to operate the product at enterprise scale on our infrastructure and on their own private probes. The role is full-stack in the real sense: the same engineer who designs how a check execution flows through scheduling, probes, and the telemetry pipeline should also be able to build the workflow that lets a user understand and act on the result. As a company we are remote-first and global, we embrace people of different experiences and backgrounds to build diverse teams where every person brings a new perspective to the software. We are looking for Software Engineers who are passionate about building reliable systems and providing seamless experiences for our customers to join our growing team! Our stack is Golang, Typescript and React, but we build tools for people using many other stacks. What you'll be doing: As a Software Engineer on the Synthetic Monitoring squad, you will work across the whole system - Go services and agents on the backend, a TypeScript/React application on the frontend and you'll be expected to reason about it as one system, not two halves. Specifically, you will: * Own features end-to-end across the stack: from API and data model design in Go, through the execution pipeline, to the user-facing workflows in TypeScript/React * Design and evolve systems, not just features: contribute to architectural decisions on scheduling, probe lifecycle, telemetry ingestion, and API design that shape how the product scales * Build the cross-product and AI-assisted workflows that connect Synthetic Monitoring to the wider Grafana Cloud platform * Make the product operable at enterprise scale: the governance and organization primitives that let teams with hundreds of checks manage Synthetic Monitoring as code and with confidence * Break down complex, ambiguous problems into incremental deliverables and iterate quickly based on feedback * Ensure quality through testing, observability of your own systems, and documentation: our checks are something customers alert on, so reliability is a feature * Be a part of the team's on-call rotation and take ownership of the services you're running We invest heavily in developer productivity. You can use modern AI coding assistants as part of your daily workflow (your choice of tools, within security guidelines), backed by a company-funded usage budget so you can iterate quickly without unnecessary friction. We encourage pragmatic AI-assisted development: faster prototyping, test generation, refactors, documentation, and incident follow-ups—always with strong code review and quality standards. You'll also have access to the latest frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Technologies you'll work with: * Go (backend services, APIs, and the synthetic monitoring agent) * TypeScript / React (the Synthetic Monitoring app in Grafana) * Kubernetes across AWS, GCP, and Azure * k6 (the execution engine behind scripted and browser checks) * Grafana ecosystem (Mimir, Loki, Prometheus) What Makes You a Great Fit: * You are comfortable working in a remote-first company; communication is key. * For us, working together means being collaborative, friendly, kind, and respectful. We operate by consensus. You can contribute to a discussion, disagree constructively, and commit to the team's decision. You are able to communicate design decisions clearly in written and spoken English. * Strong Go, or a path to it. We build Synthetic Monitoring in Go. Deep experience building and operating production backend systems in another systems language (Rust, Java, C++) translates well; backend experience limited to JavaScript/Node.js runtimes does not. * Operational mindset. You've run what you've built: you've owned production services, understand what it means to carry a pager, and treat reliability and toil reduction as part of the product. * You are a systems thinker: you reason about how components interact - data flow, failure modes, cost, and operational behavior - not just how a single feature works in isolation. * Pragmatism and short feedback loops. You break complex problems into increments: analyze, design, deliver an MVP, learn, iterate. You are able to design a solution, get feedback, and write a prototype by yourself - the ability to work on your own is crucial. * You have a good understanding of a software development process that takes a user-centered approach. You easily build an understanding of the users' context and goals which will help you build the right solution with the maximum value. * You use AI tools as a natural part of your engineering workflow - whether for accelerating exploration, code review, or reasoning through design tradeoffs - and you're thoughtful about where they help and where they don't. Bonus Points For: * Experience designing or operating multi-tenant SaaS systems at scale * Experience with observability tools (Grafana, Datadog, New Relic, Sentry, etc.) * Experience with Kubernetes in a production environment * Familiarity with k6, Playwright, or browser automation at scale * Experience contributing to or maintaining open source projects Compensation & Rewards: In the United Kingdom, the Base compensation range for this role is GBP 72,000 - GBP 90,000. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed in the interview process. Benefits include equity, bonus (if applicable) and other benefits listed here [https://grafana.com/about/careers/#jobs]. *Compensation ranges are country specific. If you are applying for this role from a different location than listed above, your recruiter will discuss your specific market’s defined pay range & benefits at the beginning of the process *Compensation ranges are country specific.
