The Role — Interstellar Squad The Interstellar Squad owns a core part of our commercial platform: the billing run — a mission-critical, high-volume pipeline that turns large-scale usage data into timely, accurate invoices for customers worldwide. It's a technically rich domain: distributed data processing, event-driven workflows, financial correctness, and operational reliability at scale. We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to set the technical direction for Interstellar, raise the engineering bar across the squad, and guide delivery of a platform that has to stay correct, predictable and scalable as the business grows. A central part of this role is leading the gradual modernisation of a mature platform into a set of focused, TypeScript-based domain services — using a strangler-fig approach to extract capabilities incrementally, keeping the existing system safe and our customers unaffected while we evolve the architecture. You'll report to an Engineering Manager and partner closely with the Product Manager, Delivery Manager and engineers in the squad, as well as peer Leads across the domain. You'll have the mandate to shape how we design, build and run our systems — and the responsibility to keep the team aligned behind that direction. This role is based in the UK to work alongside the local squad and a team in Poland. You will be expected to travel to our Poland offices at least once a quarter. Key Responsibilities * Set and communicate a clear technical vision for the squad's services, aligned with product and business objectives, and translate it into concrete near-term work * Lead the incremental decomposition of a mature platform into well-bounded, TypeScript / Node domain services using a strangler-fig pattern — defining seams, sequencing extractions, and protecting delivery and correctness throughout * Define and uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, observability, and operational readiness across the squad — applied consistently to both legacy and new services * Own complex technical decisions end-to-end: articulate trade-offs, choose an approach, document it, and bring the team along * Drive architecture and system design for distributed, data-intensive billing workflows — simplifying where we can, investing where it pays off * Lead the design and implementation of SLIs and SLOs for squad-owned services (Grafana), and take ownership of their health and reliability in production * Guide CI/CD and delivery practices in collaboration with the squad (GitLab), keeping cycle time short and releases safe across both old and new components * Raise the bar on code review — provide thorough, growth-focused feedback and coach engineers to do the same * Mentor engineers at all levels, create clear growth paths and unblock them day to day; help the team build confidence in modern TypeScript/Node practices * Champion AI-assisted/agentic engineering (IDE agents, CLI tooling, reviews) — set norms for when and how to use it, keep humans accountable for correctness, and share practices with peer squads * Partner with Product and Delivery to shape roadmaps, size work honestly and manage technical debt with intent * Represent the squad in cross-domain technical forums and contribute to the wider engineering direction Key Experience & Skills Required * Proven experience leading the technical direction of a squad or product area, not only as an individual contributor * Deep, production-proven backend expertise in a modern, strongly-typed stack — ideally Node.js / NestJS / TypeScript and/or PHP 8.x / Symfony * Demonstrable experience modernising or decomposing a mature monolithic / legacy system into smaller services — comfortable with strangler-fig, anti-corruption layers, contract design, dual-write / shadow strategies, and incremental cut-overs * Strong background in distributed systems and event-driven / asynchronous processing (e.g. RabbitMQ, Kafka, SQS) * Experience designing and operating data-intensive, business-critical services where correctness, idempotency and recoverability matter * Strong command of PostgreSQL (query design, indexing, performance tuning); bonus for distributed/sharded setups (e.g. Citus) * Experience owning CI/CD pipelines and release strategy in a team setting (GitLab or equivalent) * Track record of defining and enforcing engineering standards — type safety, clean architecture, testing, observability * Practical experience with observability and SLO-driven operation of production services (metrics, tracing, logs; THE ROLE We have an opportunity for a Principal Engineer in our AI & Algorithms department, working with a particular focus on our defence and security clients. You’ll join a team of talented engineers and scientists designing, building and testing intelligent systems that require cutting edge algorithms. As one of the senior technical voices in the team, you’ll be architecting the algorithmic approach on our projects, setting the technical bar for others, and helping shape the work we deliver. As well as hands-on engineering, you’ll spend time with clients, using your expertise to win new projects as well as deliver them. You’ll work in multidisciplinary teams that use our labs and computing resources to enable us to deliver ambitious projects. Much of our defence and security work requires security clearance, so we ask for it up front. You won’t work exclusively in that sector, but a genuine interest in it matters to us. We offer a flexible approach to hybrid working, although some of the projects you will be working on will require full-time working in the office. WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING * Applying data-driven software development in machine learning/AI, applied statistics, and sensor processing, alongside mathematical computing techniques such as digital signal processing, simulation, and numerical optimisation. * Acting as technical lead and architect on our larger, more complex projects, owning the technical solution and the value it delivers to the client. * Setting technical direction and acting as technical reviewer across the department, with your opinion sought by colleagues. * Leading the development of proposals and costed work programmes, turning client problems into work we can win and deliver. * Driving internal capability and demonstrators that keep us at the leading edge and open up new conversations with clients. * Mentoring engineers and conducting technical interviews to help us recruit and grow strong people. * Contributing to how the department works, improving our processes and technical standards. WHAT YOU CAN BRING We are looking for an experienced engineer, with the breadth to lead the algorithmic component of multidisciplinary work and the ability to work with our commercial teams to help create and win new work. * 5+ years’ experience designing and delivering cutting edge algorithms for intelligent systems, including working on defence or security projects. * Technical skills in one or more of: transformer models, diffusion models, reinforcement learning, machine vision and perception. * A strong undergraduate degree in a relevant technical subject, such as AI/machine learning, computer science, mathematics or, physics. A PhD in a relevant subject is welcome but not required; deep, demonstrable industrial expertise is what matters. * Strong Python and software engineering judgement. * The ability to architect the technical approach on complex projects and to review the work of others, including working autonomously as the technical authority. * Experience mentoring and developing engineers. * Experience working with non-technical stakeholders for your work. * Interest in working directly with clients and contributing to proposals and sales conversations. * A genuine affinity for working in the defence and security sector. Machine learning is at the heart of Rosso, combining forecasting, optimisation and classical ML to process billions of data points and drive thousands of automated decisions a day. Every inference shapes the prices our customers see, so you can immediately see the impact of your work. We have proved the concept with MVPs and POCs to grow to 2% of the UK market. Now we want to take it to the next level and build towards a state of the art solution, to fuel our expansion in the UK and take Rosso international. We're looking for a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer to lead pricing ML within Rosso, building a platform that proactively drives growth by targeting the right customers to sign at the right time. Your primary focus will be the pricing engine, which sets the fees added to every quote tem serves, carefully balancing growth and margin. You will also contribute to the systems which manage both short and long-term imbalance decisions to determine how tem deals with it’s exposure across its portfolio. This is a hands-on, senior individual contributor role with significant technical leadership and organisation-wide influence. You will work closely with other MLEs, software engineers and MLOps to bring models to production, and carry real ownership of the technical direction and accountable for its performance. The right person is energised by the greenfield environment: comfortable taking on ambiguity and able to make progress before the path is fully defined. They have built pricing systems that worked and have learned from the times it hasn't. They'll bring that hard-won judgment to a system where the foundations are still being laid, and where early decisions compound. Success will be turning our current reactive system into a pricing engine which proactively drives growth by targeting the right customers to sign at the right time. 🚀 Responsibilities: * Own the technical direction for pricing ML: Define what to build and how within the pricing engine, setting the strategy and roadmap for pricing machine learning as a core piece of tem's IP. * Build ML systems for price optimisation: Design and implement models that dynamically set prices, balancing the trade-off between signing probability, portfolio balance and margin maximisation. * Solve imbalance problems: Develop probabilistic models to optimise risk management and short-term balancing decisions in a highly dynamic environment. * Bridge modelling and production: Own the modelling and data layer while working closely with software engineers and MLOps to ensure models are architected for production, contributing to system design decisions that affect performance and reliability. * Communicate pricing decisions clearly: Articulate model behaviour, assumptions, and trade-offs to other technical stakeholders so that pricing decisions are understood across the teams that depend on them. 🎯 Requirements: Must-haves: * Deep experience building ML systems for pricing, revenue optimisation, or decision-making under uncertainty, with a track record of models that went from concept to production and delivered measurable commercial impact. * Strong foundation in stochastic optimisation and probabilistic modelling, with the judgement to formulate ambiguous business problems as the right mathematical approach rather than reaching for familiar tools. * Proven first-principles reasoning: you choose between stochastic programming, classical ML, reinforcement learning, or a simple heuristic based on the problem, not the technique you know best. * The engineering craft to match your modelling depth: production-grade Python, a high bar for code quality and system design, and the ability to work alongside software engineers as a technical peer across the full ML lifecycle. * Senior technical leadership in ML: a track record of setting direction for a significant technical area, influencing cross-functional teams, and translating complex model decisions into clear terms for commercial, product, and engineering stakeholders so they are understood and acted on. Bonus points: * Experience with reinforcement learning or causal inference in applied, commercial settings. * Familiarity with energy markets, power trading, or portfolio management. * PhD or equivalent research depth in a quantitative discipline (statistics, applied mathematics, physics, operations research, or similar). * Ability to reason about the trade-offs between optimisation solvers (Gurobi etc) and gradient-based ML methods (PyTorch etc), and the judgement to know when to reach for each. * Experience working with high data throughput systems in production. 🗣️ Interview Process: Our processes normally take around 2-3 weeks from first call to offer - please let us know about any adjustments to timelines that may be required. 1.
