We are currently seeking a candidate for a postdoctoral position in colorectal cancer (CRC) research. The project will explore the role of goblet cell-intrinsic mucosal defence systems in determining susceptibility to CRC. The candidate will join a newly established Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM) at the University of Gothenburg (https://wcmtm.gu.se/). As part of this venture, Dr. George Birchenough has established his research group (https://www.birchenoughlab.org/) at the Department of Medical Biochemistry & Cell Biology at the University of Gothenburg. The group works towards a better understanding of how mucosal defence systems control our interactions with the environment, how those systems fail in disease and how they might be prophylactically or therapeutically targeted. The group is part of a large network of researchers at Gothenburg University, most importantly the Mucin Biology Groups cluster (http://www.medkem.gu.se/mucinbiology/) that currently includes over 30 researchers working at the forefront of mucosal biology. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with experts in multiple experimental methods that work within the cluster, as well as more widely with other local and national groups within the WCMTM network. Subject area Translational Mucosal Biology Subject area description Our mucosal surfaces are the interface between the environment and our tissues. Their physiological functions are critical, but necessitate constant exposure of living cells to a vast collection of microbial lifeforms that includes many opportunistic and obligate pathogens. As a result, our mucosa has evolved multiple defensive systems that allow them to endure in this environment, and failure of these systems is often linked to development of acute and chronic disease. Consequently, understanding the development and regulation of these systems is key to understanding the pathoaetiology of mucosal disease and how they can be prevented or treated. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most frequent and lethal types of cancer, and is especially prevalent in nations with a high human development index, indicating that factors associated with a modern, Westernized lifestyle are linked to CRC development. Most cases of CRC result from spontaneous mutations rather than heritable oncogenic mutations, and dysregulated interactions between the intestinal microbiota and immune system are implicated in tumorigenesis. Goblet cell-intrinsic defence systems, such as the mucus layer and sentinel goblet cells normally control host-microbiota interactions, but we have recently found that these systems are highly susceptible to environmental alterations caused by exposure to a Western-style diet. Thus, disruption of goblet cell-dependent functions may have a causal relationship with CRC development. By combining data from pre-clinical mouse models with analysis of samples from healthy and CRC patients, we hope to develop a better understanding of how goblet cell functions contribute to CRC susceptibility and develop new approaches to prevent CRC development. Duties The successful candidate will be expected to work extensively with pre-clinical mouse models and human tissues acquired during routine surgery. The candidate will be encouraged and expected to conduct their experimental research in an independent manner and to make significant contributions to project planning. The candidate will also actively contribute to the local research environment at the Mucin Biology Groups and engage in interactions with collaborators and other groups belonging to the WCMTM network. If necessary, the candidate may also be asked to assist in the supervision of Masters or PhD students. Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment Third-cycle subject area Environmental assessment, specialising in environmental chemistry. Description of the doctoral project This doctoral project aims to improve the understanding of contaminants of emerging concern in food chains by using bioaccumulation and trophic transfer as a strategy for chemical prioritisation. The project will investigate how contaminants move from environmental sources into organisms and through food chains, and how these processes can be used to identify substances of relevance for ecosystems and One Health. The project will focus on one or more selected food-chain systems, depending on sample availability, collaborations and scientific relevance. The project includes i) selecting relevant food-chain systems, biological matrices and contaminants of emerging concern based on occurrence data, chemical properties, bioaccumulation potential and available samples; ii) applying target, suspect and non-target screening using LC-HRMS to identify known and previously unknown substances in selected biological matrices; iii) assessing bioaccumulation, biomagnification and trophic transfer patterns where suitable data and samples are available; iv) using environmental specimen bank samples, where available, to investigate time trends and support retrospective screening; and v) connecting measured chemical patterns to possible environmental sources. You will work in an international, interdisciplinary team. The project provides access to advanced instrumentation and training in data analysis, scientific communication, and collaborative research. The project will use existing information from pan-European monitoring campaigns stored in the NORMAN chemical occurrence database to identify substances that may occur in water resources and contribute to human exposure. Based on this evidence, the doctoral student will develop and validate analytical methodologies for selected emerging substances and apply them to water-related samples collected at national or international level. The results will be interpreted using hazard, exposure and risk indicators to support the prioritisation of substances for future monitoring. In addition, suspect and non-target screening will be applied to reveal novel compounds that may contribute to early-warning systems for emerging chemical risks. Central to the project is the use of liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) for sensitive and reliable chemical analysis. Analysis of polar substances may require the use of specialised LC columns. The project may also include comparison with LC-MS/MS for selected compounds to assess sensitivity, linearity, precision and suitability for monitoring. Örebro University and the School of Science and Technology are looking for a doctoral student (PhD student) for the doctoral programme in Chemistry, concluding with a doctoral degree. Start date: Fall 2026. Project description The doctoral student will be part of the research project COAST PFAS – Coastal PFAS Transition Lab for Source Control, Substitution and Governance, a transdisciplinary initiative addressing the spread of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from urban and industrial sources to coastal environments. The project combines environmental analytical chemistry, wastewater and stormwater research, process understanding, and systems perspectives to support preventive and sustainable PFAS management. The PhD project is connected to the work package PFAS flows from land to sea, which focuses on identifying, mapping, and quantifying PFAS sources and transport pathways in urban water systems and coastal environments. The research will include targeted and non-targeted PFAS analysis in wastewater, stormwater, industrial effluents, and receiving waters. The research will also include the development of sector-specific PFAS fingerprints and mass-balance approaches. The doctoral student will work with advanced analytical methods including LC-MS/MS, combustion ion chromatography, extractable organofluorine (EOF), oxidation methods for PFAS precursors, and high-resolution mass spectrometry for suspect and non-target screening. The work also includes interpretation of large analytical datasets and integration of results into source-tracking and fate-assessment frameworks. The project is conducted in close collaboration between IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Chalmers University of Technology, Örebro University, VA SYD, and Malmö City. The doctoral student will be part of an interdisciplinary and international research environment involving analytical chemistry, environmental engineering, and sustainability research. The position involves collaboration with researchers and stakeholders across academia, industry, and the public sector, and parts of the research may therefore be conducted at different research institutions and partner organizations in Sweden and internationally. The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in field sampling campaigns, laboratory work, workshops, and collaborative research activities within the COAST PFAS Transition Lab. Join our research group for an exciting Doctoral student position to create important new insights into High-temperature diagnostics! About us At https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/env/research/energy-technology/, we develop and analyse sustainable energy systems and conversion technologies for industry and society. Through strong national and international collaboration, we unite experimental and systems research to create efficient, low-emission solutions driving the transition towards carbon-neutral energy and industry. About the research project The project that you will work with focuses on the developent of a new thermal imaging system with the aim to improve the efficiency of biomass conversion in power plants. The work combines advanced radiation and CFD modeling and the use of spectrometer and camera-based data. You will be part of the groups teams that works on related topics and together we will develop a new diagnostic set-up and conduct experiments on different scales. The research group that you will be part of has a strong track record in developing experimental and modeling tools to study and advance novel high-temperature processes used for industrial and power generation purposes. We have our own experimental facilitites at Chalmers campus, but we will also conduct experiments on an industrial site. Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory: To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education (ECTS) credits in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Engineering Physics or equivalent. Part of the work will be based on methods of which there is extensive experience in the research group, but the project will also involve development of new methodologies. Take courses at an advanced level within our Graduate school Teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours Collaborate with industrial partners as well as other researchers. Iit will be part of your responsibilities to keep contact with the project partners. Communicate your results through scientific conferences and journals as well as project meetings and reports. Contract terms The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start. The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years. Arbetsuppgifter Syresatta organiska radikaler är viktiga drivkrafter för kemin i många system, såsom metabolismen hos levande organismer, polymerisation, förbränningssystem och den naturliga miljön (jordens atmosfär). Men få tekniker kann detektera dem idag. Vi söker en motiverad forskare för att utveckla och tillämpa en masspektrometrisk teknik (protonöverföringsmasspektrometer, PTr-MS) för detektion av individuella syresatta organiska radikaler i luft, inom det prestigefyllda European Research Council (ERC)-Advanced projektet EPHEMERAL. Arbetet kommer att omfatta karakterisering och optimering av en toppmodern Time-of-flight-masspektrometer (PTr-MS) och änvanda andra instrument för att detektera dessa radikaler i laboratorie och i luft. Denna tjänst kommer att vara inom Nozière-gruppen vid institutionen för kemi på Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan i Stockholm.
