Subject description Electric Power Engineering covers studies of sustainable systems for production and transpor-tation of electrical energy, and the interaction between power grid, electricity production, and electricity consumption. Project description The project aims to develop models that describe how HVDC installations affect, and are af-fected by, power quality in electrical networks up to 150 kHz. Measurements will be used to further develop existing models and to distinguish between primary and secondary emissions as well as nonlinear interactions. The results will provide the basis for a generalized model of emission and immunity related to HVDC installations.The study will also investigate network resonances, interactions between multiple HVDC in-stallations, and the effects on transformers and other grid-connected equipment. The project is carried out in collaboration between Luleå University of Technology (LTU) and Hitachi Energy. Duties A PhD position involves both theoretical and practical work. As a doctoral student, you will be trained in scientific research through the publication of journal articles and presentations at national and international conferences. You will also complete both mandatory and elective doctoral courses. In addition, you may have the opportunity to gain teaching experience. As a researcher, you often work as a neutral party in various contexts, providing an excellent opportunity to learn how to manage and contribute to challenging development and research projects. The Division of Materials Science at Luleå University of Technology invites highly motivated candidates interested in conducting research in Engineering Materials, with a focus on the design and structuring of advanced sorbent materials for environmental and gas-cleaning applications. The research subject "Engineering Materials" has ongoing research programs span broad research areas in metallic and ceramic materials (high-temperature intermetallic, space materials, high-strength steels, porous ceramic materials, and materials intended for energy recovery). The division is part of the Department of Engineering Science and Mathematics. The department has several other research topics with activities that border on material technology, such as materials mechanics and machine elements. In the undergraduate program, the main two programs focusing on the international profile of the Division of Materials Science are important for the department, namely the EEIGM master's engineering program and the AMASE master's program. The research subject of Engineering Materials consists of five senior researchers, two technicians, and nine doctoral students.   SUBJECT DESCRIPTION Engineering materials includes the composition, structure, properties and production of materials, mainly metallic and ceramic materials, as well as aspects of their use.   PROJECT DESCRIPTION The PhD student will focus on the development of structured sorbent systems and additive manufacturing approaches for industrial NOx and SOx capture applications. The work will include formulation of printable sorbent inks and pastes with controlled rheological properties, integration of functional nanoparticles for induction-assisted regeneration, and fabrication of structured adsorbent geometries using advanced manufacturing techniques. The student will investigate how structural design, porosity, and mass-transfer properties influence adsorption performance, pressure drop, thermal management, and cyclic stability under humid process conditions. The project will further involve scale-up, process integration, and evaluation of structured sorbents in pilot-scale systems relevant to acid-plant and greenhouse CHP gas streams. The project is approved for funding in EIC Pathfinder challenges from waste to value creation.   TASKS Working as a researcher involves defining your daily tasks and how they will be carried out. You will act and train as a project manager, combined with your development. Involvement with other projects and teaching will occur up to 20 percent of your time.   QUALIFICATIONS Appropriate background for the position is a Master of Science degree in materials science, chemistry or chemical engineering, good knowledge, experience, on sorption and catalysts and their characterization and shaping of sorbents and catalysts. The division works closely with industry to address practical engineering challenges and develop solutions for future mining and infrastructure projects.     Subject description   Mining and Rock Engineering comprises mining technology, rock engineering and rock mechanics, including rock mass properties, design of rock excavations and tunneling as well as planning and production processes related to both mining and civil engineering.     Project description   As underground mining operations at LKAB continue to greater depths, the rock mass is subjected to increasingly high in-situ stresses and dynamic disturbances, leading to elevated risks of seismic events and rockburst damage. There is therefore a growing need for improved understanding of ground support performance under both static and dynamic loading conditions.     This project aims to develop a mechanism-based and site-adapted framework for ground support design, focusing on energy absorption, deformation capacity, and system-level behaviour. The research will integrate laboratory testing, numerical modelling, and field observations from deep underground mines.     The expected outcomes include improved understanding of support performance, development of evaluation methodologies, and optimized support system design tailored to LKAB’s mining conditions.     Duties   As a PhD student, you will conduct both field data analysis and numerical research within the project. Your work will include:   - Development and application of numerical models for ground support systems (e.g. bolts, mesh, shotcrete, and rock mass interaction)   - Analysis and interpretation of laboratory testing results, including static and dynamic performance of support elements   - Participation in the design and evaluation of ground support systems for deep underground mining   - Collaboration with industry partners and integration of field data into research   - Dissemination of research results through scientific publications and conferences     Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies.
