You will take primary responsibility for planning and executing the experimental program in collaboration with senior researchers. While the role does not include formal personnel management, scientific initiative and independence are highly expected. Key responsibilities include: Designing and executing cryogenic experiments. Context The Diffraction Group at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, in collaboration with the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), has an immediate opening for a two-year postdoctoral position funded through the Spanish Scientific Member agreement. The project focuses on emergent phenomena in transition metal oxides exhibiting unconventional frustrated magnetic and quantum phases. The materials under study include non-collinear magnets, such as complex ferrites with chiral states of remarkable stability, and frustrated negative charge-transfer oxides with hidden symmetries. The aim is to advance the design, understanding, and control of emergent states in quantum materials with non-collinear magnetism and symmetry-protected properties of interest for magnetoelectric and spin-lattice-driven applications. The research relies primarily on neutron techniques, with emphasis on single-crystal neutron diffraction and the exploitation of polarized neutrons and polarization analysis. Complementary techniques based on resonant X-ray scattering (RMXS/RIXS) are also of interest. Based at ILL, the position offers the opportunity to interact with a diverse community of scientists across European neutron, synchrotron, and FEL sources, and to carry out research stays of varying duration in the two partner laboratories in Barcelona (ICMAB) and Madrid (UCM). It is an interdisciplinary role bridging chemistry, solid state physics, and advanced characterization using quantum beams. Your tasks The successful applicant will be expected to: . Join Blykalla and lead the fuel development and qualification effort that underpins the use of a novel nuclear fuel in an advanced reactor. This role puts you at the center of predicting, validating, and defending fuel behaviour for the western world’s first lead-cooled SMR. You’ll own the delivery of the fuel qualification programme, and strongly influence the development of models and codes that allow for producing regulator-ready evidence to understand our fuel performance. What we do at Blykalla At Blykalla we are developing the next generation of nuclear technology with our Advanced Small Modular Reactor (SMR), based on uranium nitride fuel and a compact, lead-cooled design. As Sweden’s only SMR developer, we are on a mission to decarbonize heavy industry and other energy-intensive sectors and deliver safe, scalable, and sustainable energy. What you’ll get to do Your mission is to ensure that we can predict, explain and justify fuel behaviour with confidence, using validated models, defensible assumptions and traceable data. Build & evolve fuel performance models ● Take ownership of the development, extension, and adaption of fuel performance models for a lead-cooled fast-spectrum operation, with a focus on physical mechanisms rather than black-box use. ● Lead the benchmarking of models against multiple fuel types (including nitride, oxide and metallic fuels) and fuel performance codes, to support comparison, validation, and fallback options. ● Understand and improve model behaviour by analysing why models work, where they break down, and what must be changed for lead-cooled fast spectrum operation. ● Work closely with experimental and design teams to specify experimental testing (in- and out-of-pile) and examinations that generate data relevant for model validation or development. What you'll do In this role, you will support mechanical design by securing effective solutions for dummy parts, bridging parts, and fixtures, while providing technical and mechanical support to stakeholders. You will also assist the test coordinator with rig-related knowledge and detailed understanding of test objects to support test planning. Close collaboration with laboratory personnel is a key part of the role, contributing with practical solutions to improve testbeds and installations. You will support laboratory staff and stakeholders by ensuring safe ways of working, providing guidance on testbed safety, installations, and laboratory procedures.
