We are looking for a Ph.D. student to conduct ground-breaking research using machine learning methods with the aim of developing a new generation of welding materials. The project is multidisciplinary, and you will work closely together with experts at Chalmers and industry with long and recognized experience of welding science and AI methods. About us The Ph.D. student will be employed at the Division of Energy Technology at the Deptartment of Environmental and Energy Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology. We conduct research and offer education mainly in energy technology and energy systems. Our research focuses on combustion and gasification of biomass, technologies for carbon dioxide avoidance, development of energy materials, and sustainable energy systems. The current project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Division of Chemical Physics at Chalmers, which conducts fundamental research with respect to computational materials using first-principles methods and machine learning approaches. About the research project Welding is, in many ways, the backbone of our society and is prevalent across most industries, including automotive, energy, and manufacturing. Still, the industry is associated with high resource use and depends on certain strategic and critical metals. The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. It will provide researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. We are now looking for an Instrument Scientist for the HEIMDAL powder diffractometer. The position is with the Diffraction & Imaging Division. About the division The Diffraction & Imaging Division consists of the scientific staff that are leading the instrument construction projects and the staff that will eventually execute the day-to-day operations of six neutron instruments. The upcoming responsibilities of the division are Finalize the installation and commissioning of all instruments in the division Deliver state-of-the-art scientific capabilities for internal and external users to enable the wider science community to advance science and technology Deliver scientific results from the neutron instruments in collaboration with the user community and other divisions in the science directorate Plan and implement further developments and upgrades of the instruments Push the state-of-the-art capabilities of neutron instrumentation to make maximum benefit from the ESS source. Main Responsibilities HEIMDAL is a multiscale diffractometer that, in its full scope, will enable studies of functional materials across a wide range of length scales, from conventional powder diffraction to the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) regime (possible future upgrade). The construction of the diffractometer part of the instrument is ongoing and expected to be completed in 2027. The immediate mission is to finalize the installation of the instrument and take part in the commissioning of the instrument without and with neutrons. The instrument scientist will work closely with the core instrument team at ESS, comprising another instrument scientist, an instrument computational scientist, and an instrument operational engineer, and in strong interaction with partner institutions and ESS technical services. The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. It will provide researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. We are now looking for an Instrument Scientist for the DREAM powder diffractometer. The position is with the Diffraction & Imaging Division. About the division The Diffraction & Imaging Division consists of the scientific staff that are leading the instrument construction projects and the staff that will eventually execute the day-to-day operations of six neutron instruments. The upcoming responsibilities of the division are Finalize the installation and commissioning of all instruments in the division Deliver state-of-the-art scientific capabilities for internal and external users to enable the wider science community to advance science and technology Deliver scientific results from the neutron instruments in collaboration with the user community and other divisions in the science directorate Plan and implement further developments and upgrades of the instruments Push the state-of-the-art capabilities of neutron instrumentation to make maximum benefit from the ESS source. Main Responsibilities The DREAM instrument is a neutron powder diffractometer that offers great flexibility for crystal and magnetic structure studies of ordered and disordered materials. The construction of the instrument is completed. The immediate mission is to commission the instrument with neutrons. Commissioning with neutrons is expected to begin in 2027 and continue through 2028, after which the instrument will transition into operation within the ESS user programme. The instrument scientist will work closely with the core instrument team at ESS, comprising another instrument scientist, an instrument computational scientist, and an instrument operational engineer, and in strong interaction with partner institutions and ESS technical services. The successful candidate must be active in a scientific field of direct relevance to DREAM. Essential qualifications and experience: PhD in experimental studies in the physical sciences relevant to the DREAM scientific programme, preferably in energy or nanoscaled materials. Practical experience in neutron powder diffraction Working knowledge of the data analysis for diffraction software GSAS-II, TOPAS, FullProf, Jana2006, PDFgui Evidence of an independent research profile in relevant science areas supported by a publication record Ability to work collaboratively and individually Good interpersonal communication and presentation skills, and the ability to interact effectively with staff and users at all levels. Context The Diffraction Group at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, in collaboration with the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), has an immediate opening for a two-year postdoctoral position funded through the Spanish Scientific Member agreement. The project focuses on emergent phenomena in transition metal oxides exhibiting unconventional frustrated magnetic and quantum phases. The materials under study include non-collinear magnets, such as complex ferrites with chiral states of remarkable stability, and frustrated negative charge-transfer oxides with hidden symmetries. The aim is to advance the design, understanding, and control of emergent states in quantum materials with non-collinear magnetism and symmetry-protected properties of interest for magnetoelectric and spin-lattice-driven applications. The research relies primarily on neutron techniques, with emphasis on single-crystal neutron diffraction and the exploitation of polarized neutrons and polarization analysis. Complementary techniques based on resonant X-ray scattering (RMXS/RIXS) are also of interest. Based at ILL, the position offers the opportunity to interact with a diverse community of scientists across European neutron, synchrotron, and FEL sources, and to carry out research stays of varying duration in the two partner laboratories in Barcelona (ICMAB) and Madrid (UCM). Project description The production of Portland cement still cannot be qualified as an environmentally friendly process due to high CO2 emissions from burning fuels, calcination of limestone, and the negative effects of mining operations. Several solutions are being implemented worldwide, but none have provided an efficient solution. This project aims to study the possibility of substituting the high-temperature clinkering process with a cold synthesis based on mechanochemistry. About the research project Nuclear fuel is enclosed in cladding tubes made from zirconium alloys. To improve reactor safety and economic performance, new alloys are continuously being developed. In this project, the corrosion behaviour of a novel zirconium alloy will be investigated to improve our understanding of the underlying corrosion mechanisms and support the development of next-generation materials. The European Spallation Source (ESS) will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) invites applications for an instrument scientist for the dedicated Test beamline (TBL). The Diffraction and Imaging Division is home to the instrument scientists and instrument operational engineers responsible for designing, constructing, and operating the DREAM, MAGiC, BEER, HEIMDAL, ODIN, and TBL instruments at ESS. New designs for a wide range of neutron instruments are being implemented to fully leverage the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source. The primary purpose of TBL is characterizing the target-reflector-moderator system and verifying the performance of the neutron source based on operating parameters such as proton beam energy, stability, pulse length, and beam rastering, as well as the moderator conditions. An important aspect of this work will be comparing the measured and simulated neutronic performance of the moderator, providing a crucial reference for various neutron scattering instruments. Additionally, the TBL will contribute to optimizing instruments and methods to fully exploit the unique long-pulse time structure of the ESS neutron source. The TBL will function as a local characterization station, supporting technical developments in areas such as neutron optics, polarization, and novel detectors. It is designed to support the user program by performing exploratory imaging experiments, neutron diffraction studies, and single-crystal alignment. Due to the flexibility of the instrument, a variety of detectors and sample environments can be fitted inside the experimental cave, allowing multipurpose measurements on not only thermal neutrons but also epithermal/fast neutrons and gamma rays. This includes but is not limited to a well-established technique such as time-of-flight transmission measurements, neutron tomography, neutron activation analysis, grating interferometry, etc. As the facility evolves, the modular design of the TBL will allow for modifications to meet new objectives, ensuring its continued relevance and utility in advancing neutron science. The construction of TBL is completed and the team prepares the instrument for the first neutrons. About the role: As the instrument scientist for TBL you will: Work closely with another scientist and the instrument operations engineer, forming the core instrument team. The European Spallation Source (ESS) will soon be the world’s most powerful source of neutrons, providing researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. About the role Within the Science Directorate, the Scientific Support Division provides the ESS neutron science program with experimental support including sample environments, user laboratories, deuteration, and hall coordination in close collaboration with Instrument Divisions. The Sample Environment group at ESS is preparing to support all ESS neutron instruments by developing, assembling and integrating a broad range of specialized equipment for achieving both very low and very high temperatures, high magnetic fields, high pressure, vacuum, gas or liquid flow, lasers, and in many cases, automated systems. Once ESS transitions into operations in early 2027, we will provide operational support for all sample environments on the instruments in close collaboration with scientists, as well as continuing the development of new sample environments. We are now seeking a Sample Environment Engineer to support the development, commissioning and the operations of high temperature furnaces, as well as related gas handling and pressurized gas systems. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering sample environment projects in these areas, working in close collaboration with other members of the Sample environment group as well as academic research groups to develop new equipment and provide operational support for early science experiments at ESS. As part of this role, you will specifically develop new sample environments in collaboration with the universities participating in the ESS Early Science Initiative project “Sustainable and functional materials from local resources” funded by the Swedish Research Council. Day-to-day, you will: Specify, design, develop and procure equipment for high temperature/gas handling and pressurized sample environment systems. Work with academic researchers to develop technical specifications and propose solutions and designs to meet scientific requirements. Assemble, integrate and commission sample environments and associated equipment. Install, operate, maintain and repair high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems and related equipment. Collaborate with ESS instrument teams and academic user groups to establish specifications and priorities for new high temperature/gas handling/pressurized systems. Provide operational sample environment support for the ESS instruments including on-call support. Provide expert experiment safety reviews for user proposals and carry out safety testing of user-supplied equipment. Collaborate with ESS instrument teams, users, and sample environment groups at other large-scale facilities to further develop high temperature/gas handling/pressurized sample environment equipment and technologies. Participate in the setting-up, maintenance and operation of the sample environment workshops and facilities. This is a full-time, fixed-term position for around 3 years based at ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden. About you You have up to an MSc level degree in an engineering subject (e.g. mechanical, materials or metallurgical engineering) with relevance to this position, which focuses on the development and practical realization of high temperature and pressurized gas handling systems for scientific measurements. Previous experience of design as well as hands-on work experience with high-temperature equipment and gas handling/pressurised gas systems is required. You also have previous experience of mechanical assembly, maintenance and repairs, as well as relevant knowledge of material behavior at high temperatures and hazards involved in pressurized gas systems. Experience of developing scientific or technical equipment involving controlling or monitoring temperature, mass, gas pressure or other experimental parameters would be considered particularly beneficial for this role. Experience with additional techniques including vacuum welding, brazing, wiring, light sheet metal work, and tube bending is also regarded as a merit, as are basic machining skills. Knowledge of control systems and programming would be an advantage, but not a requirement. You are accustomed to working with scientists as well as technicians to define and deliver projects and support operating equipment. You take as much pride in designing engineering solutions to meet scientific requirements as providing hands-on practical solutions to equipment problems, and approach all tasks with a collaborative, service-oriented mind-set. You are eager to learn new things, adapt quickly, and interested in contributing across a variety of tasks besides your core area of competence. A genuine interest in designing as well as building, repairing, or improving experimental equipment is vital. Prior work in a sample environment group or large-scale facility working with high temperature furnaces would be considered a merit, but is not essential.
