⭐Our Business Banking team
Business Banking is on a mission to make money work for small businesses around the world. Since launching in 2020, Monzo has
grown to be the bank of choice for over 800,000 UK businesses - voted by our customers as Britain’s recommended business account
for overall service quality.
This is an exciting role for a product manager who loves getting close to customers, understanding local market nuance, and using
that insight to improve product-market fit. You’ll focus on helping Monzo succeed in our European markets by working
cross-functionally with user research, data science, and marketing to identify the biggest customer and business opportunities,
and working with teams across Monzo to solve them.
You’ll sit at the intersection of expansion, growth and new feature development. That means deeply understanding customer needs in
specific markets, spotting where our proposition needs to be adapted, and driving the changes that will have the biggest impact on
customer outcomes and business performance.

Our teams are mission driven, and typically include Product Managers, backend, web and mobile engineers as well as data scientists, designers and subject matter experts relevant to that mission. Teams are organised into groups, and then collectives - we aim to keep our line management structure as shallow as possible, and for teams to directly own decision making relevant to their work. Engineering Managers are accountable for the technical and delivery outcomes for their area - that means supporting and developing best in class engineering talent, as well as creating an inclusive team environment for people to do their best work. You’ll be responsible for structuring, organising, supporting and challenging your team to deliver on their mission. You’ll be supporting, coaching, and developing them through their careers. * Partnering closely with other disciplines including Product, Design, Research, and Data, to build out product strategy, vision and mission setting, and goal setting. * Taking accountability for delivery across your squad(s), collaborating with Technical Leads and Product Manager. * Actively fostering a high bar for engineering excellence within your teams. * Partner with senior engineers in your area to drive technical initiatives that raise the bar for our engineering practices. * Lead on communication with stakeholders from other teams, creating focus space for engineers to do their best work. * Collaborate with the wider engineering organisation to contribute to company-wide best managerial and technical practices and standards. 🤩We’d love to hear from you if… While this is not a role which requires hands-on-coding, we are looking for an experienced manager who has a strong technical and delivery background and has worked as a software engineer in previous roles. We recognise that engineering managers lead in different ways, we’re looking for someone who: * Has worked on user-facing mobile products - ideally, you’ll be able to discuss the product impact you’ve made in your previous roles, including working on product strategy, roadmapping, and goal setting. * You have a founder mindset and like taking ownership of anything that will drive business impact. * Has an understanding of what good looks like for a high-performing team of engineers and ability to chart a course to get there * Is comfortable operating with ambiguous problem areas with a high degree of autonomy. * It’s a bonus if you have experience working in an experimentation led environment. * Has delivery experience and is able to guide the squads in achieving their outcomes. * Focuses on outcomes over processes, who optimises for the highest impact and leverage. * Is able to input, understand and challenge engineering decisions - but to empower the team to make those decisions themselves * Is able to to coach people to achieve their goals * Has a natural ability to inspire and motivate a team The interview process: Our interview process involves three main stages 1. Recruiter Call (30 mins) You'll meet our Engineering Leadership Recruiter to discuss your experience and learn more about Monzo. They'll be your partner and guide throughout the interview process. 2. Initial Call (1 hour) You'll meet with one of our Senior Engineering Managers or Engineering Directors. They'll ask you about your previous experience, in particular people leadership, product delivery and technical leadership. They’ll ask example based questions (‘Tell me about a time when…’) 3. Loop Stage (3 hours 30 mins) The Loop stage consists of 3 x 60 min interviews that take place over 1-2 days (depending on your availability) and one 30 minute reverse interview (more details below). - Team and Org Management (1 hour) An example based interview with 1-2 of our engineering leaders. They’re interested to hear examples from your previous experience on the teams you’ve led, how you’ve shaped and partnered with product, and the impact you had. - System Design (1 hour) You'll partner with a Staff or Principal Engineer on a technical whiteboarding exercise. - Behavioural (1 hour) Similar to Team and Org Management, this is an example based interview with 1-2 Engineering Leaders. We have several non-graduates; only some of us studied Computer Science; some of us have worked in huge companies; some have only ever worked in startups; others are former consultants. Monzo works in small, interdisciplinary teams We have around 400 engineers out of roughly 4,500 people in total - and we have big ambitions. There are many interesting challenges ahead, and we're happy for people to move between teams or to specialise, whatever you prefer. As an engineer here you'd be able to work directly with anyone across the company, and we run regular knowledge-sharing sessions so you’ll learn heaps about everything from how banks work to effective communication. 🔑YOU’LL PLAY A KEY ROLE BY... We’re searching for product-focused Android engineers to evolve our native mobile app. You’ll take pride in building polished user experiences, and you’ll balance the need for well-tested resilient code with moving fast and iterating. You’ll be working on a product that is a part of day to day life for more than 11 million people already, and your work here will shape the way that people interact with their finances. As an Android Engineer at Monzo you'll work in a small, autonomous product squad alongside iOS Engineers, Backend Engineers, User Researchers, Product Designers, Product Managers, QA Testers, and Data Scientists. You and your team will be responsible for an overall company goal, rather than building a specific feature - you'll have the opportunity to have impact on both what we build, and how we build it. Mobile engineers at Monzo work on everything from the personal banking product to customer support tools. We also have a small mobile platform squad dedicated to enabling other engineers to move faster. Every week we meet as an Android discipline to discuss tools, techniques, problems we're encountering across the company and work together to improve our codebase and processes. You'll report to an engineering manager who will meet with you every 1-2 weeks 1:1. They’re dedicated to helping you grow and develop as an engineer. OUR ANDROID APP Our app is 100% Kotlin, built using MVVM (Model View ViewModel) and Coordinators, and modularised by product feature. We use RxJava, Retrofit and Moshi for API calls and Dagger for dependency injection. We’re starting to use Coroutines for most new features. Room is our choice for persistence, and we use repositories for interacting with data. We’ve built out our design system with Compose. We use GitHub Pull Requests to do code reviews, and write unit tests for our ViewModels, Coordinators, and any other classes which contain logic. We write tests for all of our Compose screens and snapshot test them with Happo. We also use Espresso to test flows, which are executed via our continuous integration system.
