About the Team The Payment Gateways team (used to be known as IPP Payments Backend) is a critical pillar of Adyen’s Core Payments solution. The Core Payments group handles the foundational business logic, diverse payment flows, and global features that empower Adyen’s merchants worldwide. As part of the Payment Gateways team, you will design and build the infrastructure powering Adyen’s in-store payment experience. This means engineering systems capable of handling massive, simultaneous global traffic while maintaining rock-solid reliability for thousands of physical terminals, mobile devices, and merchant hosts. What You Will Do As a Backend Engineer (Java), you will orchestrate complex payment flows by integrating multiple Adyen systems and defining the unified architecture for our next-generation payment features. * Design & Deliver: Build, test, and deploy high-volume, low-latency Java applications that form the backbone of our global payment systems. * Architect for Scale: Collaborate across Data and Platform engineering teams to design highly resilient, scalable services with reliability at their core. * Own the Technical Lifecycle: Drive engineering best practices, contribute to scalable architecture designs, and actively participate in product roadmap discussions. * Data-Driven Optimization: Define, implement, and monitor performance KPIs to proactively identify and eliminate system bottlenecks. * Collaborate Globally: Partner cross-functionally with global product managers and engineers, occasionally collaborating directly with merchants to understand how businesses consume your solutions. Who You Are * Senior Java Developer: You have 8+ years of hands-on experience delivering high-impact backend services using Core Java, web services, and SQL/PostgreSQL, with a proven track record of technical leadership and mentoring junior engineers. * Scalability: High availability, fault tolerance, and low latency aren't afterthoughts for you—they are non-negotiable architectural prerequisites. * API Expert: You possess a strong understanding of modern API frameworks (such as REST and OpenAPI), alongside best practices for API security and developer experience. * Curious & Forward-Thinking: You actively evaluate emerging technologies and alternatives, confidently presenting your findings during architectural reviews. * Collaborative Communicator: You know how to get things done by actively seeking out diverse perspectives and bringing people together to solve complex problems. * Customer-Centric: You balance deep technical rigor with genuine Customer Empathy, always keeping the end-merchant's business success in mind. Flexible to work in CST timezone.  * Experience in handling L3 or L4 level support within a support account will be an added advantage.  * E-Commerce Solution Development  * Design, develop, and maintain backend services, APIs, and integrations using commercetools platform and microservices architecture.  * Implement commercetools core components such as Product Catalog, Customers, Carts, Orders, Pricing, and Inventory.  * Develop custom middleware, API integrations, commercetools extensions, and event-driven services.  * Troubleshoot, debug, and enhance existing backend services and integrations.  * Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior developers and support their technical growth.  * Participate in defining and enforcing backend development standards, coding practices, and technical guidelines.  * Translate business and functional requirements into scalable and maintainable backend solutions.  * Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code following best practices including design patterns, unit testing, and secure coding standards.  * Collaborate with frontend developers, QA teams, DevOps, and solution architects to deliver high-quality composable commerce solutions.  * Conduct code reviews and ensure development aligns with organizational and architectural standards.  * API, Integration, and Backend Development  * Design and develop RESTful APIs and GraphQL services to integrate commercetools with frontend and enterprise systems.  * Implement microservices and event-driven integrations using messaging systems such as Kafka, SNS/SQS, or Pub/Sub.  * Integrate commercetools with enterprise platforms such as PIM (Akeneo), CMS (Contentful), ERP, OMS, and payment gateways.  * Ensure backend services are scalable, secure, and optimized for performance.  * Support CI/CD implementation, automation, and deployment processes.  * Documentation  * Create and maintain technical documentation, including backend architecture, API specifications, and integration workflows.  * Document implementation approaches, best practices, and development standards.  * Ensure proper documentation to support maintainability, scalability, and knowledge sharing.  * Contribute to reducing technical and documentation debt through continuous improvement.  * Participation in Engineering and Developer Community  * Act as a technical role model by promoting best practices such as modular architecture, code maintainability, automated testing, and peer reviews.  * Contribute to the backend architecture knowledge base and support adoption of new technologies and best practices.  * Participate actively in design discussions, architecture reviews, and technical decision-making.  * Continuous Improvement and Quality Engineering  * Collaborate with Solution Architects and DevOps teams to improve backend architecture, performance, and scalability.  * Contribute to initiatives such as automated testing, code quality improvement, continuous integration, and continuous delivery.  * Continuously identify opportunities to improve system stability, performance, and developer productivity.  Must have  To be considered for this role, you must meet the following essential qualifications:  * Education: A Bachelor's or Master’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related technical field is typically required.  * Experience in Node.js, Java, Typescript, and composable commerce architecture.  improvement of scalable, headless eCommerce solutions.
