The Department of Political Science is an international academic environment that welcomes students, researchers and staff from all over the world. Our research covers topics such as political institutions, elections, public opinion and democracy, international and European politics, environmental politics, corruption and political ideas. The Department of Political Science invites applications for an associate researcher to the research project Diaspora and Foreign Policy: A Comparative Analysis. This is a fixed-termed position for 11 months, 100% of full-time.
As an associate researcher, your main duties will consist of data collection, analysis of textual material, data compilation, and data coding. Other duties may be assigned according to the needs of the project, for example presenting and writing reports that describe the data material you have collected.
You will be part of the department’s research support team.
We are looking for you who have at least a Bachelor’s degree in political science or a related subject area that the employer considers relevant.
To be successful in this position, you must have an eye for detail, good organizational skills and be able to solve problems. You need to have very high communication and collaboration skills.
The work requires good and documented knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methods and data management, as well as experience of using language models (LLMs). Knowledge of how to use word-processing software and spreadsheets is required.
Applicants must have excellent written and oral proficiency in Swedish and English, both spoken and written. Knowledge of French is a merit.
Previous experience of working with qualified research support in a similar environment, at a university or in a larger research programme, is a merit.
Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability for the position. We will make an overall assessment and the applicant who is considered to be best qualified to carry out and develop the tasks described above will be appointed to the position.

Doctoral position in Peace and Development Research with Focus on Host-State Responses to Transnational Repression Peace and Development Research at the University of Gothenburg is a leading site of interdisciplinary enquiry. The research environment consists of ca 50 researchers using a broad range of approaches to investigate various themes in peace and development in different regions of the world. These themes include, but are not limited to, conflicts, security, gender, human rights, global political economy, migration, regional and global governance, and resistance. Peace & Development Research at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg, announces a doctoral position with focus on host-state responses to transnational repression, broadly understood as attempts by authoritarian regimes to punish, deter, undermine, and silence activism in the diaspora. The doctoral project will be conducted within an international research project which examines transnational repression (TNR) and host state responses to it in the Nordic-Baltic region. Within this framework, the PhD student will contribute to a work package focusing on how norms related to TNR are translated into legal and policy responses in host states. Adopting a comparative perspective across two to three Nordic-Baltic countries (Sweden, Norway, and/or Estonia), the candidate may, for instance, study such dimensions as • The level of awareness among public officials working with law enforcement, border control, immigration, and/or cybersecurity. • State outreach to migrants and diasporas at risk. • Forms of collaboration between state authorities and civil society organizations. • Procedures for reporting incidents of TNR. • The investigation and prosecution of perpetrators. • And/or other topics relevant to TNR. The doctoral studies comprise one year of coursework and three years of research, culminating in the production of a dissertation that makes a significant and original contribution to the research field. The knowledge and skills that are acquired during the studies should be applicable to postdoctoral research or other professional work. Doctoral studies comprises four years of full-time study, and leads to a doctoral degree. The candidate is expected to work in Gothenburg in the project team and start with both course work and project related work during the first year. Start date no later than January 2027. The candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Additionally, the candidate shall have proficiency in relevant language(s) used in the candidate’s selected case countries. As part of your employment as a doctoral student, you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout your study period, and result in a corresponding extension of the studies. The assessment places particular focus on: • A research proposal (max 2,000 words including list of references) that presents some preliminary ideas about how the applicant envisions that their PhD work will contribute to research on the focus area indicated above. The research proposal will be assessed for the applicant’s ability to formulate a research problem and his/her familiarity with and handling of methodological and theoretical issues. The research proposal should suggest a research problem (including purpose, aims and research questions) and indicate tentative ideas on theory, research design, methods, and data, as well as a provisional timeline. The Department of Sociology and Work Science is now seeking one to two associate researchers to work in the EU Horizon funded REFLECT and VISTA, with a focus on gender, intersectionality, and quantitative methods. REFLECT: https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101290292 VISTA: https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101286827 Duties The successful candidate(s) will contribute to two EU Horizon funded research projects led by Sofia Strid and Anne Laure Humbert. The REFLECT project examines intersectional gender inequalities among researchers in Europe, and the VISTA project focuses on gender-based violence in organised sport in Europe. The successful candidates will be expected to contribute to one or both of the projects as per operational requirements of the projects. These mixed methods projects address pressing societal challenges related to gender, intersectionality, and inequalities through the use of advanced quantitative (including cross-national survey research), qualitative research (including narrative interviews, focus groups and photovoice) and co-creation methods. They involve collaboration with international partners and aim to generate knowledge with relevance to science, policy and practice. The associate researchers will work within the above projects, predominantly in their quantitative work packages. Duties include contributing to the design and analysis of cross-national surveys, leading on the operational implementation of these surveys by actively managing the fieldwork implementation, as well as the management and analysis of quantitative data. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to collaborate closely with senior researchers and international partners, contribute to joint publications, and take initiative in leading academic outputs within the project framework. The role may also involve contributing to mixed methods research, including the integration and analysis of qualitative data, in collaboration with other team members. Qualifications Selection will be based on an overall assessment of scientific competence, methodological skills, experience, and personal suitability in relation to the duties of the position. Required qualifications For this position the applicant must hold or be close to completing a doctoral degree in social statistics, in sociology or a related discipline, with a strong quantitative component. Job assignments The goal of the third-cycle study programme is a doctoral degree in Religious Studies. The programme includes coursework, with each course being examined as it is completed, and the doctoral student’s own research project, which leads to a scholarly thesis. During the study programme, the doctoral student will communicate research findings in both oral and written form. The goal of the programme is for the doctoral student to develop the knowledge and skills to be able to conduct original and independent research in Religious Studies, and to contribute to the development of knowledge within the discipline through the production of a scholarly thesis. Another aim is to develop the ability to apply the acquired knowledge and skills within post-degree research or other qualified professional work. Doctoral students must be physically present at the department and actively interact in the research environment, including the department’s doctoral and research seminars. Assessment Selection among applicants who meet the requirements for general and specific eligibility is based on the ability to successfully complete the education at the doctoral level.
