As a Postdoc fellow, you will have the chance to conduct cutting-edge research in materials physics, taking advantage of state-of-the-art tools that will lead to attractive future job opportunities in academia or industry. Being part of this research project gives you the one-of-a-kind experience in form of doing experiments at the world´s first 4th generation synchrotron, MAX IV in Lund, Sweden. The successful candidate will contribute to the experimental and theoretical investigation of two-dimensional Pb films coupled to metal and semiconductor surfaces. This work builds on our ongoing, long-term research program centered on spin-split electronic structures of quantum wells—an area that has attracted significant attention in the context of spintronics. Complemented with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to build scientific and technical competence as well as strengthen transferrable skills, this position provides you with the skills, knowledge and competence needed to be successful in your field.
Description of the workplace
The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology invites applications for a post-doctoral fellowship in Physics at the Department of Engineering and Physics.
Materials science is one of the faculty’s strategic research areas and has an inspiring multidisciplinary atmosphere. The materials physics group has a broad scope of interests encompassing research on metal/semiconductors, nano-materials, organic molecular and silicon-based solar cells, (see https://www.kau.se/en/physics/research/materials-physics ). The research on metal/semiconductor surfaces and interfaces is focused on surface structures; metal thin films, and organic crystalline layers, using experimental techniques such as scanning tunneling microscopy and synchrotron radiation methods such as angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy [1-3]. The materials physics group presently consists of seven senior scientists, two post-docs and seven PhD students, and is now growing strongly by the recruitments of more post-docs.

What we offer
The research group of Surface Physics at Karlstad University invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position, starting in 2026 (start date negotiable). The position includes funding for travel and is supported by the Carl Trygger Foundation through the grant “Giant Rashba splitting in Pb quantum wells on metal/semiconductor.” Salary will be provided in the form of a tax-free scholarship, 30000 SEK/month.

About the research project The aim of this project is to investigate the use of Graphene related two-dimensional (2D) materials to improve the performance and efficiency of lithium-ion batteries. 2D materials such as graphene, MXenes, and transition metal dichalcogenides possess high electrical conductivity, large surface area, and excellent mechanical strength, which can enhance charge transport and energy storage capacity. These materials can help address major limitations of conventional lithium-ion batteries, including slow charging rates, low energy density, overheating, and poor cycle stability. The project also aims to explore the functionalization of 2D materials and understand how 2D materials can improve battery safety, extend lifespan, and support the development of lightweight and high-performance energy storage systems for future technologies. Who we are looking for The following requirements are mandatory: A doctoral degree in Materials Science, Polymer Chemistry, Physics, or an equivalent foreign degree. About the position A PhD Research Fellowships is available at the Department of Mathematics, University of Oslo (UiO), in the research group of Prof. Andreas Carlson. Starting date as soon as possible, latest by January 1, 2027. The fellowship period is three years. No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo. The position is associated with projects funded by the Research Council of Norway (HAIRY, LUBRIBOT) and the European Research Council (TWIST). The research will provide a fundamental understanding of the physical processes that arise when droplets interact with soft fibres of complex geometry. A central focus is to develop a new understanding of droplet wetting on fibrous structures, as well as the coupling between active surface properties (and their temporal changes) and external driving mechanisms/forces. This will be achieved through design of new experiments, as well as developing new theoretical understanding of the flow physics. The projects aim to design and investigate new fibre and surface geometries for flow control and for applications such as water harvesting from atmospheric fog. The physical designs will be partly bio-inspired and will emphasize sustainability. The projects offer opportunities to collaborate with both national and international collaborators. The PhD student will: • Develop experiments of droplet flow and wetting on twisted fibers and on soft materials. • Be directly involved in integrating experiments and theoretical prediction. • Develop a new understanding of the fundamental flow physics through theoretical and/or numerical work. • Develop independence and be self-driven to advance with their research project. • Work in an interdisciplinary team with expertise in mechanics, complex fluids, physics and biophysics and sustainability thinking. • Follow our PhD program that include an educational component. This position is well suited for candidates who are highly motivated by fundamental science and excited about questions related to capillary flows, droplets, fluid–structure interactions and interfacial fluid mechanics. About the position A three-year postdoctoral research fellowship is available in the research group of Prof. Andreas Carlson at the Department of Mathematics, University of Oslo. Starting date no later than December 1, 2026. No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo. The position is part of two projects funded by the Research Council of Norway, focusing on the development of soft hairy surfaces for flow control and vibration-based soft robots. The overarching goal is to develop a new understanding of fluid flows coupled to complex and actively driven surfaces. Specifically, the projects aim to uncover the fundamental physical principles that govern the coupling between active surfaces and their surrounding fluid environment, and to use this knowledge to inspire new technological applications. The physical designs will be partly bio-inspired and will emphasize sustainability. This position is well suited to candidates who are highly motivated by fundamental science and excited about questions related to actively controlled or driven surfaces in the context of soft robotics, sensing, and flow control.
