The Role
We’re looking for an experienced Underwriter based in Mumbai who thrives on challenges, values autonomy, and is passionate about
finance that supports small businesses not just turning a profit. You’ll be responsible for underwriting new finance proposals
that protect and deliver value to Liberis, while enhancing our processes through your expertise.

What you’ll be doing * Underwriting new and repeat business requests, evaluating multiple sources of data to make sound, rational decisions. * Engaging directly with prospective customers to gather additional information and communicate approve/decline decisions clearly. * Acting as a referral point for internal stakeholders, ensuring correct policies and procedures are consistently applied. * Driving improvements in underwriting processes to maintain the right balance between customer experience and risk protection. * Leveraging SQL, Python, GCP, and DBT to analyze financial data, automate workflows, and produce actionable insights. * Using advanced Excel skills to model scenarios, interpret management accounts, cash flow statements, and assess credit risk. What we think you’ll need * 2+ years of experience in underwriting, preferably within small business finance. * Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with meticulous attention to detail. * Deep understanding of financial statements, cash flow, and management accounts to assess affordability, sustainability, and credit risk. * Proficiency in SQL, Python, Excel, GCP, and DBT for financial and operational analysis. * Ability to make confident decisions and clearly articulate reasoning to colleagues and clients. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex findings logically and concisely. * Ability to adapt and refocus in a fast-paced, growing environment. Qualifications * Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or a quantitative field; Master’s degree is a plus. * Demonstrable experience in data analytics and process improvement within underwriting. ABOUT THE TEAM What we do: The Credit Risk Strategy protects Stripe by managing the end-to-end credit risk of our largest and most complex users. How we do it: We leverage deep underwriting expertise and data-driven stress heuristics to make informed decisions at every stage of the user lifecycle—from onboarding to loss recovery. Our goal: Enabling Stripe's growth by making confident, calibrated decisions on our highest-exposure users. WHAT YOU'LL DO As the Manager of the APAC Credit Risk Strategy Team, you will lead a group of high-performing and tenured underwriters and Credit Strategists responsible for Stripe's most significant financial exposures. You aren't just managing a queue. You are building the framework that allows Stripe to say "yes" to complex, multi-billion-dollar businesses while keeping our balance sheet secure. RESPONSIBILITIES • Lead a Specialized Team: Coach and mentor a world-class team of commercial underwriters and Credit Strategists. You'll be responsible for their professional growth and for fostering a culture of rigorous, data-driven credit judgment. • Own the E2E Credit Risk Lifecycle: Oversee the team's execution across all critical decision points—from high-stakes new user onboarding and contract negotiations to reactive stress reviews and loss recovery. • Strategic Stakeholder Partnership: Act as a key advisor to Sales, Risk Strategy, Risk Policy, and Bank Partners. You will navigate complex Bank Concurrences and Waivers, ensuring our risk appetite aligns with both internal goals and external partner requirements. • Drive Operational Excellence: Work closely with our Credit Ops and SDC teams to implement efficient and effective review processes while providing constructive feedback to improve procedures. You will identify gaps in our current processes and build the organizational infrastructure needed to support Stripe's evolving product suite. • High-Stakes Decisioning: Serve as an escalation point for ad-hoc credit reviews and referrals, making informed judgments on Stripe's largest and riskiest users during volatile market conditions or incidents. • Systems Thinking: Deeply understand our performance metrics including loss trends and leading indicators. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • A coach and mentor dedicated to nurturing talent and helping team members perform at their best. • 12+ years of experience in commercial underwriting and financial analysis across multiple geographies in APAC • Comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP and IFRS), financial analysis, cash flow analysis, and comfort with reading and interpreting financial statements. • Ability to comfortably interact with the CFOs and CEOs of our top merchants. • Strong collaboration, communication, and relationship-building skills, with an ability to influence stakeholders across organizations and borders. • Experience recruiting, developing, and managing diverse and high-performing teams. • Decisive, yet open to learning — you will make many critical decisions every day, even with the knowledge that you will be wrong some of the time. • Excellent communicator who is able to convey complex ideas succinctly • Experience working cross-functionally across multiple teams and time zones PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • Strong data visualization skills and a willingness to use data and AI tools to analyze and make decisions on the portfolio. • Experience working in tech, or in another fast-paced, high-growth environment. • Experience working with Greater China merchants as this individual will work with merchants based in the Greater China region. • Experience working in a matrix org structure. • Experience working with Engineering, Product, and Ops teams.
