You will lead the Client Engineering organisation, responsible for the core health and delivery of Tide’s mobile and web
applications. This group comprises Core Architecture, Engineering Productivity, and Quality Engineering. Your mission is to ensure
our frontend ecosystem is a competitive advantage, providing the standards and tools that allow our product teams to build with

This is a newly created role. There's no predecessor's roadmap to inherit and no legacy decisions you're stuck defending, you're the first person in this seat, with a real mandate to decide the architecture and the AI strategy from here. If you want to build, not maintain, this is that role. You'll partner with Product, Risk, and Operations leaders to shape where this platform goes next. ABOUT THE ROLE: As a Director of Engineering at Tide you'll be: * Setting the technology strategy from a blank page — owning the roadmap for Fraud, Financial Risk, AML, AI workflows, tooling, and automation across Ongoing Monitoring, with the autonomy to decide what gets rebuilt and how. * Putting agentic AI into production, not a slide deck — building autonomous, multi-agent workflows that investigate alerts, pull external data, chain complex reasoning, and make initial risk calls in real time. * Staying ahead of adversaries who are also using AI — building detection for bot swarms, deepfake-powered KYC bypass, and algorithmic fraud loops, against a landscape that's constantly shifting: impersonation scams, APP fraud, account takeover, banking fraud. * Making high-stakes AI defensible — ensuring every system is auditable, explainable, and aligned with global AML directives and data privacy standards, because these decisions carry real regulatory weight. * Building engineering organisations across India, Eastern Europe, and the UK an inclusive, high-performance culture that's yours to shape. * Making the ML lifecycle faster and sharper — partnering with Product, Data, AI, Risk, and Ops to improve predictive modelling and agentic AI capabilities, cutting retraining and rules-deployment time. * Turning automation into real savings — championing data-driven decisions and AI/ML opportunities that cut operational cost and friction at scale. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: * 15+ years of engineering experience with 5+ years in leadership roles (Director/Senior Director level). * Machine Learning: Strong experience in supervised and unsupervised models, decision trees, neural networks, and Large Language Models (LLMs). * Agent Frameworks: Hands-on experience with multi-agent orchestration frameworks (e.g., LangGraph, AutoGen) used to build self-correcting compliance workflows. * Fintech Domain Knowledge: Deep understanding of fraud vectors (e.g., mule accounts, account takeovers, synthetic identity fraud) and AML typologies. * Adversarial AI Security: Proven track record in detecting deepfakes, synthetic identities, and prompt injection attacks targeting financial systems. * Risk/Scale: Minimum 5+ years building and deploying production-grade, risk-scoring environments at scale. * Experience with fintech platforms - risk/compliance tooling (AML, Fraud, Financial Risk, SARs, KYX, agentic AI detections). * Excellent people leadership skills – you know how to grow and inspire teams. * Solid technical foundations: cloud-native architectures, microservices, event-driven systems, and data platforms (AWS or GCP). ABOUT THE ROLE We're rebuilding Wheely to be the fastest and most reliable ride-hailing app on the planet — one where both the passenger app and the driver app stay responsive on a flaky signal in the back of an apartment building, keep working behind censorship firewalls, and don't drop the real-time guarantees a moving car depends on. We're also adding something nobody in this category has built seriously: privacy as a product, not a compliance footnote. This role owns the core that makes all of that possible: the platform, the infrastructure, the privacy primitives the rest of engineering builds on top of, and the internal agent harness that lets teams across the company automate work that used to need humans. You'll inherit a mostly-Go codebase and a small group of strong engineers. You'll also inherit a genuinely open question on most of what matters. Is microservices the right end state, or did we default into it? How should a backend look in 2026 when AI has absorbed a large share of routine engineering work, when QA isn't a separate function, and when a small senior team paired with a few unusually strong grads can outship a 2019-style org several times its size? Our main engineering hub is in Cyprus. We're now building up London as a second hub, and this role is part of that — you'd be one of the first senior engineering leaders on the ground here, helping shape what London looks like as a location, who we hire into it, and what work belongs where. RESPONSIBILITIES * Own the technical direction of the platform end to end — including the architectural questions that haven't been answered yet, like whether to keep moving toward microservices or reconsider. * Make real-time work, end to end. Driver app especially (location, dispatch, ride state) all of it under adversarial network conditions. * Lead the privacy story on the engineering side — what's actually different about how data flows through our systems vs. every other ride-hailing company. * Own and grow the agent harness so other teams can wire AI into workflows that used to need people. Today it's Rust. Tomorrow's shape is yours. * Help build London as an engineering hub. That means hiring into it, deciding (with the rest of the leadership team) what work makes sense in London vs Cyprus, and setting the culture for a new office while staying tightly coupled to the main hub. REQUIREMENTS * You have designed backend systems from scratch (not only maintained, scaled, or rewritten what someone else built). We'll spend real time in the interview on the trade-offs you made and why. * Real-time systems experience at consumer scale. * Several years of managing engineers, with hiring and firing calls you'd defend in detail. Total headcount matters less to us than the calibre and the outcomes. * Based in London. We sponsor visas: you don't need to be in the UK today, you just need to be willing to move. Regular travel to our Cyprus hub expected, especially early on.
