The Cibitoke malaria project is a three-year project implemented in partnership with the Burundi Ministry of Health through the
Cibitoke and Ndava Health Districts. The project was established in a context where malaria remains one of the country's most
significant public health challenges and aims to contribute to reducing malaria-related morbidity and mortality in the district.
The project combines a comprehensive package of preventive and curative interventions, implemented in close collaboration with
Ministry of Health staff at community, primary and secondary levels, and with a strong emphasis on coaching, accompaniment and
capacity strengthening. Curative activities include community case management (ICCM), support to 20 health centres, and free
treatment of severe malaria for children under 15 at Cibitoke District Hospital. Preventive activities include malaria
vaccination, perennial malaria chemoprophylaxis, distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets, and health promotion. The
project was designed not only to implement this package of interventions but also to generate evidence on its implementation and
results through an embedded operational research component, alongside advocacy and emergency preparedness components.
Purpose
The purpose of this capitalisation is to facilitate reflection and document the experience gained through the design and
implementation of the Cibitoke malaria project. As the project approaches its closure at the end of 2026, the capitalisation will
create a space for stakeholders to reflect on the project, share their experiences and perspectives, and document knowledge that
they consider important for the future.
