We are a brand new team, working quickly to accelerate Stripes engineering productivity by effectively deploying LLM agents and
tools to automate large swaths of the engineering workflow. We’re a cross-continent team, spanning North America and Europe -

ABOUT THE TEAM Stripe Infrastructure is responsible for the reliability, scale, performance, and cost of Stripe's systems and the productivity and sentiment of Stripe's people. You may work on a wide variety of critical business areas including: * Core Infrastructure—We're the home for Stripe's critical tier0 infrastructure systems (Compute, Networking, DocumentDB, Distributed Caching and High assurance engineering). We build the foundational platform for Stripe products and services to allow them to operate at scale. We drive reliability, availability, efficiency, and scalability of these systems. * Developer Infrastructure—We're responsible for the productivity of all developers at Stripe. Ensure Stripe's engineers have a reliable, fast, and easy-to-use inner dev loop to maximize productivity while building everything from low-latency microservices to large-scale data pipelines and machine learning models. * Data Infrastructure—We're responsible for offering data serving infrastructure spanning across data warehouse analytics, streaming analytics, and search capabilities. The stack is supported by a collection of internally developed large-scale distributed services and several popular open-source technologies like Trino/Presto, Apache Pinot, Hive Metastore, ElasticSearch etc. The systems we own support all of the data serving needs of high-scale services and thousands of individual Stripes across the company. * Admin Platform—We empower Stripes to quickly build secure and delightful internal products in service of their users. * Service Platform—We enable engineering teams at Stripe to easily write and ship useful services that correctly, reliably, and efficiently leverage platform capabilities. * Developer Productivity AI—We're responsible for doubling Stripe's engineering velocity through effective use of LLMs. We own Minions, Stripe's one-shot, end-to-end coding agents. WHAT YOU'LL DO You'll work on projects that span technologies, systems, and processes where you'll design, build, test, and ship great code every day. The AI Events team builds the event platform and trigger system that power GitLab Duo Flows, enabling them to run automatically in response to events across the development lifecycle. The platform handles internal GitLab events like code pushes, issue and merge request changes, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipeline results, and deployments, as well as custom events from third-party tools like Jira, Jenkins, and Slack. Flow Triggers link projects to flows, firing automatically when matching events occur, so that AI-powered workflows like automated code review can run without anyone lifting a finger. As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll join a small, close-knit team that maintains infrastructure that many of GitLab's AI features rely on. You'll likely spend much of your time on the triggers side of the platform, linking events across GitLab and third-party tools to the AI workflows that act on them. This part of the system needs to handle significant scale and stay highly available, since it's core to automated AI-enabled work across the platform. WHAT YOU’LL DO * Design and build the trigger system that links GitLab events, including code pushes, merge request and issue changes, CI/CD results, and deployments, and third-party events from tools like Jira, Jenkins, and Slack to the AI-powered Duo Flows that act on them. * Contribute to the broader event platform, the core infrastructure that many of GitLab's AI features rely on to know when and how to run. * Architect for high availability and throughput, since this part of the system sits at the center of automated AI workflows across GitLab and needs to reliably process events at scale. * Work within GitLab's Rails monolith, where much of the event and trigger system lives, while staying open to other languages used elsewhere in the platform. * Influence product and architecture direction by proposing iterative solutions to complex technical problems across a multi-service environment. * Collaborate closely with your teammates, product manager, and designer to shape what the trigger system supports next, likely starting with an additional trigger type. * Partner cross-departmentally with other Duo Agent Platform teams to make sure triggers and events integrate cleanly with the broader agent ecosystem GitLab is building. * Participate in Tier 2 and Tier 3 on-call rotations to troubleshoot production, security, and urgent engineering issues in a globally distributed environment. WHAT YOU’LL BRING * Deep experience with Ruby and Rails, comfortable working within a large, established monolith and shipping production code effectively. * Proven track record building products that interact with large language models, not training or building machine learning models yourself, but with hands-on experience integrating large language models into real, user-facing tools. * Proven track record designing and operating systems built for large scale, with a focus on high availability and throughput in production environments. * Hands-on experience with agentic systems and development, including building workflows that let AI agents take autonomous action. * Demonstrated ability to make progress in evolving problem spaces and learn new AI capabilities quickly as the underlying technology shifts fast and this team ships while it learns. * Strong written communication skills for working asynchronously in a remote, globally distributed team. * Additional helpful experience includes Python, since other parts of GitLab's AI platform are built in it, and using GitLab as a product. ABOUT THE TEAM We're part of GitLab's AI Engineering organization. We're a small team with members based in Europe, and we're growing. We work closely with our manager, product manager, and designer, and we coordinate cross-departmentally with other AI Engineering teams, since GitLab's AI teams work closely together. We operate async-first, communicating through GitLab issues and Slack, with async standups and regular one-on-ones. AN OVERVIEW OF THIS ROLE As a Staff Backend Engineer (AI) in the Verify stage at GitLab, you'll help shape and scale the core infrastructure behind GitLab CI. You'll play a central role in how we integrate AI into CI/CD workflows. Your work will impact performance, reliability, and usability for people running millions of CI jobs, from small teams to the largest enterprises. AI is a top priority in the year ahead. In this role, you'll go beyond using AI tools and help define how we design, build, and iterate on AI-assisted and agentic CI experiences. You'll set standards for what good looks like across our AI agent portfolio, including how we measure success, how we instrument behavior in production, and how we account for large language model limitations. You'll also help responsibly integrate GitLab's Duo Agent Platform into CI workflows at scale, on a foundation that's fast, reliable, secure, and observable. We have ambitious goals for Agentic CI in FY27. As a Staff Engineer, you will: * Partner with Engineering, Product, and UX leadership to pressure-test our priorities: where we can move faster, where we're missing data, and where there's whitespace to innovate. Part of this includes learning and growing with the Engineering team you will collaborate closely with. * Define what success looks like across our agent portfolio and make sure we're tracking against it — not just shipping, but learning. * Bring a sharp eye to the competitive landscape, helping us understand what it takes to keep GitLab CI best-in-class in an increasingly agentic world. * Examples of Agentic CI work we have planned for the upcoming year: * AI Pipeline Builder, the foundational CI agent that auto-creates pipelines for new projects and serves as the launchpad for onboarding new CI users. * Automate the Fix a Failing Pipeline flow at scale – from dogfooding on internal GitLab projects through to safe, controlled rollout for customers, solving real infrastructure and scalability challenges. * Build the instrumentation and observability layer that makes agentic CI trustworthy — trigger volume dashboards, retry rates, cost safeguards — so we can measure what's working, catch what isn't, and iterate with confidence. * Harden the CI pipeline execution infrastructure that these agents depend on: database access patterns, background processing, and job orchestration built to handle the additional load that AI-driven automation introduces at enterprise scale. WHAT YOU’LL DO * Shape and scale GitLab CI backend infrastructure to improve performance, reliability, and usability for users running jobs at high volume. * Design and implement AI-powered features for Agentic CI, including agents, agentic flows, and LLM-backed tooling that integrates with GitLab's Duo Agent Platform. * Define what success looks like for AI in CI before you build, including baselines, measurable outcomes, and clear signals that help the team learn and iterate. * Build the instrumentation and observability needed to make AI-assisted CI trustworthy in production, including feature behavior metrics, dashboards, and safeguards. * Own and drive measurable performance improvements across CI systems (for example, database access patterns, background processing, and job orchestration) by forming hypotheses, running experiments, and validating results with data. * Write secure, well-tested, maintainable Ruby on Rails code in a large monolith, improving existing features while reducing technical debt and operational risk. * Lead cross-functional technical work with Product, UX, and Infrastructure, influencing architecture and execution across the Verify stage. * Share standards, patterns, and learnings with other engineers, raising the bar for responsible AI integration and evidence-driven engineering across CI. WHAT YOU’LL BRING * Advanced proficiency with Ruby and Ruby on Rails, with experience building and maintaining reliable backend services in a large codebase. * Strong PostgreSQL skills, including data modeling, query tuning, and scaling large tables through proactive performance investigation and remediation. * Hands-on experience building, running, and debugging high-traffic production systems, ideally in CI, workflow orchestration, or adjacent infrastructure-heavy domains. * Practical experience designing and shipping AI-powered backend features and integrations, including sound judgment about large language model limitations and responsible use in production. * A data-driven approach to engineering: defining hypotheses, establishing baseline metrics, instrumenting changes, and measuring outcomes against clear success criteria. * Familiarity with observability patterns and tools (metrics, logging, tracing) to diagnose issues, improve reliability, and guide iteration. * Strong backend architecture and delivery practices, including secure design, well-tested code, and strategies for safe rollouts and zero-downtime changes. * Clear written and verbal communication skills, including writing technical proposals and documentation, and collaborating effectively in a remote, asynchronous, cross-functional environment.
