Research engineer in remote sensing of forest

Department of Forest Resource Management We are looking for someone who is an analytical problem solver with a strong interest in forestry and remote sensing. About the position The department is looking for a research engineer who will work on research and development projects involving sensors, data processing, and advanced technical equipment, with the aim of improving analyses of individual trees and their attributes. The work includes studies of forest variables, ecosystem services, and analyses based on many different sensors and platforms. The tasks are technical in nature and include installation and management of sensors, processing of field and remote sensing data, modeling and statistical analysis of relationships between remote sensing data and field inventories, as well as evaluation and communication of results – both scientifically and for a general audience. The position also involves some fieldwork, as well as responsibility for and management of laboratory equipment such as drones and various measurement sensors. You will work in close collaboration with researchers across the department’s different projects. Your profile We are looking for a research engineer with an interest in forestry and remote sensing. You hold at least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as remote sensing, physics, computer science, geoscience, or similar. Individuals with a technical interest and education in forestry are also encouraged to apply. It is considered an advantage if you have a master’s or doctoral degree, as well as experience in forest remote sensing, programming (e.g. Python), statistical modeling, point cloud data, GIS, and reporting of results. Experience in processing remote sensing data – such as lidar data, aerial imagery, satellite data, or radar – is particularly valuable, as is strong GIS expertise. An interest in forests and nature is beneficial. We place great emphasis on your personal qualities. You are analytical, have strong problem-solving skills, and enjoy working both independently and as part of a team. Good proficiency in spoken and written English is required. About us The Department of Forest Resource Management conducts education and research in the areas of forest planning, forest remote sensing, forest inventory and sampling, forest mathematical statistics and landscape studies. The department is also responsible for the implementation of the ongoing environmental monitoring programs the National Forest Inventory, National Inventory of the Landscape in Sweden, Terrestrial Habitat Monitoring and the Butterfly and Bumblebee Inventory.
