AN OVERVIEW OF THIS ROLE As a Staff Backend Engineer on GitLab's Events & Messaging Platform team, you'll be a foundational technical leader on a high-visibility infrastructure initiative that sits underneath nearly everything GitLab ships. GitLab runs two separate systems for async work today — Sidekiq for short-lived background jobs and a purpose-built event bus for longer-running workflows. This role consolidates both into a single durable, scalable messaging and event-processing platform that powers GitLab's first-party products and underpins third-party integrations like webhooks and external triggers. You'll bridge architecture and execution — owning the design of a genuinely multi-tenant distributed system, breaking it into work the team can deliver, and solving the hard problems along the way. You'll bring strong instincts around durability, tenant isolation, and horizontal scalability — telling a design that's durable from one that only looks durable under light load — and own reliability end to end. A defining challenge is migrating existing production workloads off the legacy systems without disrupting the traffic they carry. WHAT YOU'LL DO * Lead technical execution on the CD platform: decompose complex architectural designs into well-scoped, deliverable work and drive the team to ship with quality and confidence. * Solve high-complexity engineering problems and contribute architectural feedback that shapes how the system evolves. * Set and maintain the technical bar across the codebase through code review, mentorship, and example. * Mentor engineers at all levels, helping them grow their technical capabilities and navigate difficult problems. * Represent the CD team in cross-functional engineering discussions and contribute to written technical proposals and architectural documents. * Participate in on-call rotations to help ensure GitLab.com availability targets are met. WHAT YOU'LL BRING * Deep professional experience building backend services in Go, with a track record in high-scale production environments. * Demonstrated expertise in distributed systems design, including durable workflow execution, state persistence, and event-driven architectures. * Extensive experience leading or contributing to release orchestration, deployment automation, or continuous delivery systems at scale. * Extensive hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes at production scale, including progressive delivery patterns such as blue/green and canary deployments. * Strong familiarity with GitOps workflows and tools in that ecosystem. * Experience with policy-based governance in software delivery systems. * Proven ability to translate complex architecture into clear, executable engineering work across a team. * Demonstrated ability to incorporate AI tools into daily engineering workflows to drive efficiency and quality. * Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a bias toward async, documentation-first practices. * Self-motivated and self-managing, with strong organizational judgment and a constructive approach to ambiguity. NICE TO HAVE * Experience with AI engineering or building AI-integrated product features. * Ruby on Rails experience. ABOUT THE TEAM The Events & Messaging Platform team is being built out within GitLab's Infrastructure Platforms org to take on one of the most foundational rebuilds on the platform. You'll work closely with the product and integration teams that consume it, shaping your guarantees around what they actually need, in a collaborative, async-first environment where engineers own outcomes. With the platform spanning Self-Managed, Dedicated, and SaaS, you'll reason about reliability across every way GitLab is deployed — a rare chance to define the technical foundation nearly all of GitLab depends on. HOW GITLAB SUPPORTS FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES * Benefits to support your health, finances, and well-being * Flexible Paid Time Off * Team Member Resource Groups * Equity Compensation & Employee Stock Purchase Plan * Growth and Development Fund * Parental Leave Please note that we welcome interest from candidates with varying levels of experience; many successful candidates do not meet every single requirement. Additionally, studies have shown that people from underrepresented groups are less likely to apply to a job unless they meet every single qualification. About Us At Cloudflare, we are on a mission to help build a better Internet. Today the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers millions of websites and other Internet properties for customers ranging from individual bloggers to SMBs to Fortune 500 companies. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare all have web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with every request. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Company Cultures list and ranked among the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company. At Cloudflare, we’re not looking for people who wait for a polished roadmap; we’re looking for the builders who see the cracks in the Internet that everyone else has simply learned to live with. We value candidates who have the instinct to spot a "normalized" problem and the AI-native curiosity to create a solution using the latest tools. Our culture is built on iteration, leveraging AI to ship faster today to make it better tomorrow, while ensuring that every improvement, no matter how small, is shared across the team to lift everyone up. If you’re the type of person who values curiosity over bureaucracy, and that AI is a partner in solving tough problems to keep the Internet moving forward, you’ll fit right in. Available Locations: Bengaluru, India About the role We are looking for a talented Distributed Systems Engineer to join the Data Localization team. The team builds the infrastructure that enforces where customer data is stored, processed, and decrypted across one of the largest globally distributed edge networks in the world. The problem is not simply building fast, resilient distributed systems; it is building them with provable geographic boundaries that hold under failure, at the scale and reliability Cloudflare's customers depend on. You will work across the full stack in Go and Rust, from low-level policy enforcement and cryptographic key routing at the edge to customer-facing APIs and dashboards, on top of Cloudflare's existing infrastructure: the edge fleet, globally distributed key-value storage, Workers and Durable Objects, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, and regional ClickHouse. Features ship end-to-end: you will own the design, implementation, rollout, and production operation of the systems you build. This is a good fit if you are drawn to problems where compliance correctness is a hard constraint and not just a quality goal, and where the failure modes you reason about have real consequences for customers operating under regulatory scrutiny. RESPONSIBILITIES (Must-Have Skills) * 3+ years of professional experience designing, building, and operating production distributed systems at scale. * Strong proficiency in at least one system or backend language such as Go, Rust, or C/C++, and a willingness to work in others as the codebase demands. * Solid grasp of distributed systems fundamentals, including: * Consistency and consensus models (strong, sequential, eventual; Paxos / Raft at a conceptual level). * Replication, sharding, and partitioning strategies, and their tradeoffs against availability and latency. * Failure modes: partial failure, network partitions, split brain, clock skew, and how these show up in real systems. * Idempotency, retries, backpressure, timeouts, circuit breakers, and rate limiting as first-class design concerns. * Health checking, failure detection, leader election, and graceful degradation. * Observability: metrics, logs, and tracing as design inputs, not afterthoughts. * Practical experience with API design (REST or gRPC), relational databases, and asynchronous messaging or event streaming systems, with a clear understanding of transactional and consistency boundaries. * Comfortable with AI-assisted development tooling, with the judgment to use it to accelerate work while remaining accountable for correctness, security, and design quality * Track record of production ownership: on-call, incident response, post-mortems, and continuous investment in reliability and performance. * Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to write clear design documents and collaborate effectively across time zones. Nice-to-Have Skills * Experience building compliance-driven, security-sensitive, or multi-region systems. * Familiarity with cryptography basics — envelope encryption, key management, HSMs, or PKI. * Exposure to edge, CDN, or L4/L7 proxy platforms, or to large-scale globally distributed storage or key-value systems. * Experience contributing to or driving multi-team, multi-quarter engineering programs with cross-functional dependencies across platform, security, and product teams. This is available publicly for everyone to use - it is the first consumer-focused service Cloudflare has ever released. Here’s the deal - we don’t store client IP addresses never, ever. We will continue to abide by our privacy commitment and ensure that no user data is sold to advertisers or used to target consumers. Sound like something you’d like to be a part of? We’d love to hear from you! A career at Roblox means you’ll be working to shape the future of human interaction, solving unique technical challenges at scale, and helping to create safer, more civil shared experiences for everyone. As a member of the Roblox Security Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) team, you will play a key role in supporting the Security team’s mission. The GRC team is at the heart of Roblox's security organization — empowering every builder to make risk-informed decisions by establishing a portfolio of governing policies and standards, a repeatable and scalable method of assessing and quantifying risk, and a formal oversight process for GRC capabilities across Roblox. Our program takes a balanced, "right-sized" approach to security governance — combining qualitative and quantitative risk management methodologies, including Factor Analysis of Information Risk (FAIR), to assess and prioritize the security risks that matter most to Roblox. GRC partners closely with Engineering, Legal, Finance, and leadership — including providing regular reporting to the Board of Directors and the Audit & Compliance Committee — to ensure that security risk is visible, well-understood, and actioned appropriately. The team is in an exciting phase of growth and innovation. We are using engineering to drive automation across risk management, policy lifecycle management, supply chain risk, AI risk, and controls programs. You will have the opportunity to shape how GRC operates at scale and contribute to a collaborative, high-performing team culture that supports Roblox and the broader security organization. This position is part of the Information Security team. This role will report to the GRC Manager. You will: * Be a key contributor to the Governance, Risk, and Compliance team within the larger Information Security Organization. * Partner with your GRC, Infosec and Engineering colleagues and support the design and implementation of a “risk first” governance function that is “right-sized” for Roblox. * Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and effectiveness, designing tools and automations along the way to drive security and compliance by design. * Write, revise, and manage our information security policies, standards, and procedures. * Identify and assess information security risks. You will work with Information Security and Engineering colleagues to implement appropriate controls to mitigate identified risks. You will validate control design and effectiveness. You will support ongoing risk monitoring and reporting. * Be a subject matter expert in the GRC space, providing education and guidance to others across the Roblox organization. * Be a part of the Roblox community, living our values and securing the metaverse. You have: * 4+ years of relevant professional experience in Security Governance, Risk and Compliance. * Experience interfacing with software engineers to identify risks, map commitments to controls and develop relevant policies. * Experience assessing adherence to policies and developing mitigation and remediation plans when gaps exist. * Deep understanding of risk assessment, compliance frameworks, creation of policy, and how to educate organizations on these concepts. * Understanding of security concepts and a broad range of security risks and controls. * Experience in tech; however the need to actively code is not required for the role, just the ability to interface with Engineers and quickly establish credibility.
