We invite applications for a postdoctoral fellow research position in steam turbines for ships. The work will be embedded in the SFI - SAINT project Sustainable, Applied and Industrialized Nuclear Technology, which supports the launch of 2-3 nuclear powered demonstration ships in the early 2030s. Within the SAINT project, you will work in Work Package 3 – From heat to propulsion.
The shipping industry accounts for roughly 3% of global CO₂ emissions, and with international pressure to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, nuclear propulsion is emerging as a serious candidate for deep-sea and high-utilization vessels where battery or hydrogen solutions face fundamental range and energy density constraints.
Steam turbines are already in use in commercial ships today, based on fossil fuels. This research project will investigate how to integrate steam turbines, thermal and electrical energy storages, and a nuclear reactor in an energy efficient and operational reliable energy system for various ship types. As a Post Doc (PD), you will work closely with other members of the project, both industry partners, PhD candidates and other researchers in the project on a daily basis. You will also be a part of the PD/PhD community at our institute, counting around 40 candidates at present, who work on other projects but on topics related to yours.
Your work will be to investigate the present applications of steam turbines in shipping, identify critical criteria for integration and operation, and develop a model for simulation of the energy system. This includes normal operations, ramping, transit vs. port stay, and maintenance requirements. The aim of the work is to use this tool to size the reactor (output heat), steam turbine, energy storages, and other components of the propulsion system for three specified use cases: a tanker, an offshore vessel, and a floating nuclear power plant.

Naval vessels and polar icebreakers have operated on nuclear power for decades. Nuclear propulsion is emerging as a serious candidate for decarbonization of deep-sea and high-utilization vessels in Norway and internationally, offering greater energy independence, higher sustained speeds, and extended range compared to conventional fuel-based propulsion. International bodies are actively establishing the frameworks that will govern the civil use of nuclear propulsion and the foundational engineering knowledge is being established right now.
SAINT - Sustainable, Applied and Industrialized Nuclear Technology - is a research project investigating the use of nuclear propulsion for commercial and specialist maritime vessels and aims at launching 2-3 demonstration ships in the early 2030s. SAINT addresses the technical, safety, and operational challenges that must be resolved before such systems can be responsibly deployed. PhD and Post Doc candidates will be among the people shaping this emergent field. In the intersection of nuclear and maritime engineering qualified engineers and researchers are scarce globally. Candidates who complete a PhD within the SAINT project will be well positioned for careers in nuclear safety, maritime regulation, advanced vessel design, and the emerging commercial nuclear sector.
The project is hosted at the Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering (IHB) at NTNU in Ålesund, a campus with deep roots in maritime engineering and ship design. Around 70 PhD students are at NTNU in Ålesund, roughly 40 of which are in IHB working on ship design, naval control systems and in shipping management. Within the project we are aiming to recruit up to ten PhD students and one or two Post Docs to work in parallel across the core engineering challenges of maritime nuclear propulsion, creating an unusually dense and collaborative internal research environment in which you will collaborate with researchers working across nuclear engineering, naval architecture, electrical power systems, and maritime operations.
The project is carried out in close collaboration with thirty industry partners spanning shipbuilders, reactor vendors, turbine manufacturers, control system developers, classification societies, and maritime operators. A dedicated test center for non-nuclear testing of reactor and turbine systems is under construction, giving SAINT researchers hands-on access to hardware validation at a scale rarely available in academic maritime research.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 633 400,- per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

COD-SPAWN aims to develop novel sensor technologies and autonomous monitoring systems for marine environments, with a particular focus on supporting sustainable coastal and fjord ecosystems. The project integrates advanced sensing, robotics, and artificial intelligence to enable continuous, high-resolution monitoring of environmental conditions and biological processes. The sensor technology has been successfully validated in laboratory conditions and will be further developed and adapted for marine deployment and in situ analyses. Borgundfjorden, outside Ålesund, will be used as a living laboratory and demonstration site, with particular focus on Atlantic cod spawning dynamics. This project is expected to involve extensive field activities. About the project COD-SPAWN is an ambitious, cross-disciplinary research initiative at NTNU Ålesund that develops and pilots a next-generation autonomous monitoring system for Atlantic cod spawning and pollution dynamics in Borgundfjorden — Norway's second most important cod spawning ground and a nationally prioritized site for sediment remediation. The project employs and further develops our advanced AI-based system for marine plankton and particle analyses alongside a suite of marine water quality sensors. In addition to the use of more traditional sampling methods from shore and boats, it deploys unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) equipped with image-based particle sensors and AI-driven data analysis pipelines to enable real-time, high-resolution detection of cod eggs, microplastics, and suspended contamination in a fjord that has historically been compromised by pollution. The project team involves researchers from several departments at NTNU Ålesund, and you will be part of the core team consisting of two PhD researchers, and two Postdoctoral researchers. About the position Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow is available at the Department of Physics/Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology. Starting date no later than October 1, 2026. The appointment is a full-time position and is for a period of four years, 25 % of which is dedicated to teaching activities. No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo. Postdoctoral fellows who are appointed for a period of four years are expected to acquire basic pedagogical competency during their fellowship period within the duty component of 25 %. Project description and work tasks The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will broadly address exsolution of metal nanoparticles from oxide materials, which show great promise as electrocatalyst for energy conversion technologies. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will design and characterize materials to elucidate the fundamentals of the exsolution process, including the role of point defects and their interactions, extended defects, strain and more. The primary technique will be scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), using a newly installed state-of-the-art JEOL Mono ARM instrument. The research activities will also include the use of complimentary macroscopic techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS at synchrotron beam-line facilities. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be part of a team of experienced researchers working on related themes within the sections Semiconductor Physics and Quantum Technologies, and Electrochemistry, at the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN). The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. A major goal of the project is to develop cutting-edge statistical methodology to analyse and make predictions from large-scale genomic data, which is currently generated for many wild animal populations. To this end, the project combines modern statistical methodology and builds on the current state-of-the art in animal breeding, human genomics, ecology and evolutionary biology. The post-doc will thus work with a cross-disciplinary team of researchers and can contribute towards the development of methods that will make an impact to better understand evolution and the robustness of wild anmial populations, with the ultimate goal to help preserving biodiversity. The post-doc will work at NTNU in Trondheim, and the fellowship will be hosted by the Department of Mathematical Sciences (https://www.ntnu.edu/imf). The project is a close collaboration with evolutionary ecologists from the Department of Biology (https://www.ntnu.edu/biology) and the Gjærevoll Centre (https://www.ntnu.edu/gjaerevoll) at NTNU, as well as with international researchers in the field. The successful applicant will be offered a 3,5 year position, including 6 months for career enhancing work. Duties of the position • Develop and implement new efficient and accurate statistical methods for genomic prediction, as well as for the decomposition of phenotypic variance into components relevant for evolutionary processes. This is done using genomic data from wild animal populations. • Use the new methods to derive insight into evolutionary processes of the study systems of our collaborators. • Core components of the research involve, among others, Bayesian hierarchical modelling, shrinkage methods, machine learning (ML) or dimension reduction approaches, generalized linear mixed modeling, and performing simulations using specialized statistical programming tools. • Writing and publishing papers in international, peer-reviewed journals. • An important part of the project is collaboration with evolutionary biologists, mostly at NTNU, but also internationally. The post-doc is therefore expected to maintain and nourish these collaborations, as well as disseminate their statistical research to a broader scientific audience. • Participate in international activities such as conferences and/or research stays at foreign educational institutions. • Teaching and other career enhancing duties such as mentoring PhD and Master students. • The cadidate is expected to show a high level of initiative, motivation and independence for research and writing. Required selection criteria • You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD in Statistics or equivalent. • If you are in the final phase of your doctorate and can document that the thesis has been submitted or that the defense date has been confirmed, your application can be considered even if you have not defended.
