We are a full-service consulting firm supporting the design and execution of power generation and power delivery systems across a broad range of markets, including utility-scale wind, solar, BESS, substations, transmission, and distribution infrastructure. This role offers the opportunity to support impactful utility and renewable energy projects, work across multi-disciplinary teams, and contribute to both and/or substation physical design and protection & controls engineering. What You’ll Do * Support the design and engineering of high-voltage substations for utility, renewable, and power delivery projects * Contribute to both physical substation design and Protection & Controls (P&C) engineering packages * Lead or support engineering tasks from project kickoff through IFC/design package completion * Coordinate closely with civil, structural, SCADA, relay, and project management teams to deliver integrated solutions * Prepare technical deliverables including one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, grounding plans, conduit/raceway layouts, cable schedules, bills of material, specifications, reports, and client-facing documents * Provide engineering support during procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup phases * Occasionally travel for field walkdowns, client meetings, factory acceptance testing, or construction support Focus Areas Physical Design * Develop and support substation physical layout and design packages for high-voltage projects * Prepare or review: * General arrangement drawings * Plan and elevation drawings * Grounding layouts * Conduit and cable routing plans * Control building layouts * Equipment connection details * Foundation and equipment interface coordination * Coordinate major equipment layouts including transformers, breakers, switches, bus systems, CCVTs/PTs, CTs, panels, batteries, and other station equipment * Work closely with civil and structural teams to align grading, foundations, trenching, and equipment placement * Support development of material lists, specifications, and installation details Protection & Controls (P&C) * Develop and support P&C design packages including: * One-line and three-line diagrams * AC/DC schematics * Wiring diagrams * Relay panel layouts * Interconnection diagrams * Communication diagrams * SCADA point lists * Perform engineering calculations such as battery sizing, voltage drop, conduit fill, and cable sizing * Support relay setting development, protection philosophies, and coordination with OEMs and system stakeholders * Contribute to arc flash, coordination, and other protection-related studies as applicable What We’re Looking For * Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program * 5+ years of experience in substation engineering, power delivery, utility, or renewable energy projects * Experience supporting physical design, Protection & Controls, or both within substation projects * Strong understanding of high-voltage substation systems and design practices * Experience developing engineering deliverables such as one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, layouts, grounding plans, and design packages * Familiarity with applicable industry codes and standards including NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and NFPA * Proficiency with tools such as AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Preferred Qualifications * Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to obtain * Experience supporting utility-scale renewable energy projects, transmission, or high-voltage infrastructure * Familiarity with relay coordination, SCADA integration, grounding design, and substation design standards * Experience with ETAP, SKM, ASPEN, CYMCAP, or similar power system software is a plus Pay Band - $110,000 - $165,000 base + bonus + benefits. This role will support both Physical Design and Protection & Controls (P&C) for a variety of utility, renewable interconnection, and power delivery projects. This is an excellent opportunity for a designer who enjoys working on technically detailed projects and wants exposure to the full substation design process, from layout and equipment arrangement through schematics, wiring, and construction support. The ideal candidate will have experience developing substation drawing packages, coordinating with engineers and designers across disciplines, and supporting projects from early design through IFC deliverables. The Structural Engineer will play a key role in supporting the project team with structural analysis and design of structural steel and concrete foundations for Solar, BESS, and Substation projects. This position requires the individual to develop and demonstrate expertise in performing the core responsibilities outlined below. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Demonstrate a strong understanding of structural engineering principles involved in the design of structural steel and concrete foundations for utility scale solar, BESS, and substation-related projects. * Possess strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills; must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering high-quality work through effective collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams, including substation physical, protection & control, SCADA, civil, structural, transmission, distribution, collection system, studies, construction, procurement, and project management. * Communicate effectively with all project stakeholders and internal teams, actively coordinating engineering and design activities across disciplines to ensure integration, compliance, and consistency throughout project execution. * Lead engineering efforts from project initiation to completion, working closely with drafters, designers, and engineers to develop, review, and finalize design drawings and packages. * Draft, review, and finalize a variety of technical documents including master deliverable lists, design criteria, engineering reports, specifications, bills of materials, and proposals. * Have a solid understanding of industry practices and standards such as IBC, ASCE 7, ASCE 113, ACI 318, ACI 336.1, AISC 360, IEEE, NEC and other applicable codes and standards. * Review internal and external designs for compliance with safety codes, client standards, constructability, and best design practices; conduct interdisciplinary reviews to ensure seamless coordination across all engineering disciplines. * Report workload status to the Project Manager (PM) and Discipline Manager (DM) regularly and complete assignments within the defined scope, schedule, and budget, while ensuring a high level of accuracy and adherence to Atwell’s quality standards. * Assist PMs in the development of proposal documents, technical scopes, and cost estimates for bids and change orders. * Proficiency in using standard tools including MS Office, Outlook, Teams, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam is essential. * Ability to develop new custom design tools, manual calculation sheets, and report templates using Mathcad or Excel is required. * Occasional travel (less than 20%) may be required for site visits, field walkdowns, or client meetings. KEY COMPETENCIES AND SKILLSET * Lead structural design for solar, BESS, and substation projects by producing high-quality drawing packages, including foundation plan/details, steel plan/assemblies, steel fabrication details, design specifications, and bill of materials. * Apply geotechnical and corrosion recommendations in steel pile designs. * Proficiency in structural design software such as ROBOT, RISA 3D, RISA Foundation, L-PILE, MFAD and Hilti PROFIS Engineering Suite, or equivalent software is required. * Experience with software such as Revit, PVcase, Civil 3D, and transmission line modelling tools (PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, or PLS-TOWER) is a plus. * Must have experience with power systems equipment, including PV modules, inverters, racking, piles, batteries, BMS/EMS, disconnects, transformers, switchgear, control building, cap banks, and other HV equipment/components. * Review project data to analyze existing site conditions and factors to consider for design development such as: geotechnical reports, manufacturer data, surveys, and easement documents. * Coordinate closely with civil and electrical teams to integrate structural design with site access, equipment placement, structural supports, and foundation requirements. EDUCATION * Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (ABET Accredited) * Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) License required Pay Range - $135,000 - $175,000+ base, end of year bonus, benefits.
