That is magic at work, and it’s what we show up for every day. Smartsheet is hiring a Senior Machine Learning Operations Engineer to architect our machine learning production lifecycle. Your mission is to maintain and deploy ML models to a scalable, reliable, and secure production environment. You will design and maintain the infrastructure, automation, and monitoring systems that ensure our AI products are high-performing and cost-effective. You will report to our Director, Analytics Engineering & Data Governance and work from our Bangalore, India office.  You Will: Model and Pipeline Automation  * Automate the deployment and retraining of ML models, from training through to production inference, by building and managing complete CI/CD/CT (Continuous Training) pipelines, adhering to MLOps best practices.  * Build, fine-tune, or use pre-trained LLMs, deep learning models or traditional machine learning models. * Evaluate and recommend AI or ML solutions for the product using any combination of vendor solutions and/or custom-built models. Governance & Compliance * Implement model versioning, lineage tracking, and auditing to ensure compliance with security and ethical standards. Performance Monitoring * Continuously monitor the health and performance of production machine learning models, proactively identifying and correcting model drift, staleness, and performance degradation.  * Incorporate user feedback for iterative improvements and manage necessary model retraining cycles. Cross-Functional Collaboration * Act as the "glue" between Data Scientists (who build models) and Software Engineers (who consume them). * Partner effectively with software engineers, product managers and business functions to integrate the machine learning solutions across smartsheet. Architecture and Infrastructure Management * Provision and manage scalable cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC). * Provide architectural guidance and mentorship to a team consisting of ML engineers, data scientists and analytics engineers. * Distill complex ML concepts into easy-to-follow technical documentation. You Have: * 5+ years of experience with creating, deploying and scaling machine learning solutions in a cloud environment (eg. AWS, GCP, Azure) and ability to use tools such as SageMaker, Glue, Lambda, Docker etc. to create ML models and data pipelines.  * 7+ years of programming experience in languages used in AI/ML (eg python, scala etc) * 4+ years of experience in developing deep learning and traditional ML models using common frameworks like pytorch, tensorflow, huggingface, scikit-learn etc. * Strong applied data science skills - ability to recognize data patterns, understand how and when to use various machine learning approaches (eg. supervised/unsupervised learning, deep learning etc.), and evaluate the performance of ML algorithms.  * Proven ability to remain up-to-date with the latest advancements in Generative AI approaches (eg. What you’ll do:         Drive Architectural Vision & Execution * Design for Scale: Lead the architectural design and hands-on implementation of high-throughput, low-latency data pipelines using Spark and Kafka to process massive datasets. * Build Core Infrastructure: Develop, optimize, and maintain robust data models in BigQuery and orchestrate complex, multi-layered data workflows using Apache Airflow. * Operationalize AI/ML: Partner directly with Data Science teams to take machine learning models out of the lab and into production. Design the architecture that allows these models to serve real-time predictions and insights to downstream services.        Lead Complex, Cross-Functional Initiatives * Navigate Ambiguity: Take ownership of highly ambiguous business problems, translating vague stakeholder requirements into concrete, actionable technical roadmaps. * End-to-End Delivery: Autonomously drive complex, multi-squad projects from the initial whiteboard design phase through large-scale deployment and long-term maintenance. * Cross-Business Alignment: Collaborate with Product Owners and technical leaders across different Business Units to ensure your data systems support the overall company strategy and maximize end-user value.        Elevate Engineering Standards & Team Performance * Champion Quality: Actively lead large-scale refactoring efforts and continuously drive improvements in code quality, system reliability, and internal tooling. * Proactive Problem Solving: Act as the vanguard for system health—spotting subtle, long-term performance bottlenecks early and architecting workable solutions before they impact the business. * Mentorship & Coaching: Dedicate time to leveling up the broader engineering organization. Conduct rigorous architectural and peer code reviews, mentor senior and junior engineers, and promote a pervasive culture of technical excellence. What you bring in:         Architecture & Tech Stack * Core Engineering: Exceptional proficiency in programming in Python / Scala to build robust, highly optimized data systems. * Distributed Systems: Extensive architectural experience with Apache Spark and Kafka (or equivalents like Flink, Kinesis, GCP Pub/Sub) to build high-throughput, low-latency pipelines handling AdTech-scale data (millions of events/sec). * Data Warehousing & Orchestration: Expert in data modeling and query optimization in BigQuery (or Snowflake / Redshift). Proficient in orchestrating complex DAGs and workflows using Apache Airflow (or Dagster / Prefect). * MLOps & AI Integration: Experience deploying machine learning models into production. Ability to engineer deployment architectures that translate AI models into scalable, low-latency APIs for downstream services.        Complex Execution * End-to-End Ownership: Proven track record of leading complex, cross-squad projects from initial whiteboard design through large-scale deployment and maintenance. * Problem Decomposition: Strong ability to break down highly ambiguous technical problems into clear, actionable development plans for multiple teams.        Engineering Leadership * Engineering Standards: Drives the adoption of architectural best practices, robust testing methodologies, and high engineering standards across the organization. * System Evolution: Leads large-scale codebase refactoring, system health improvements, and the evolution of internal tooling. * Mentorship: Actively mentors senior and junior engineers, conducts rigorous architectural/code reviews, and guides the team's long-term technology choices. You will be responsible for building and improving the performance, reliability, availability, security, and evolution of the Truecaller infrastructure.  What you’ll do:  * Building tooling to ease the provisioning and scaling of infrastructure resources. * Continuously improve and scale infrastructure components to handle growth. * Improve overall systems performance and investigate failures taking part actively in future improvements discussion. * Ensure systems availability, reachability, and maintainability building the necessary instrumentation, tooling, and alarming systems in order to escalate abnormalities. * Being influential in monitoring and capacity planning together with the application development teams and in alignment with the business goals. What you bring in:  * Extensive knowledge of system administration on Linux environments, preferably working on high throughput and low latency systems. * Strong hands-on experience with GCP services (or transferable AWS/Azure skills) — networking, IAM, compute, storage, Kubernetes (GKE/EKS/AKS). * Extensive knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes. * Excellent understanding of distributed system design across process and site boundaries. * Hands-on experience with service orchestration, management, deployment activities, configuration management and all necessary automation. * Strong grasp of process isolation and containerization concepts, being able to apply them when necessary. * Container orchestration: Deep understanding of Kubernetes — deploying, scaling, monitoring clusters. * Monitoring & Observability: Experience with tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Stackdriver, Datadog, New Relic, etc. * Incident management: Practical experience responding to incidents, performing root cause analysis, and improving system reliability. * Security best practices: Knowledge of cloud security, secrets management, and compliance basics. * Good understanding of software development lifecycle, versioning, building, testing, staging and deployment processes with a strong continuous delivery mindset. It would be great if you also have: * Experience developing kubernetes operators. * Experience deploying and scaling apache cassandra, scyllaDB, mysql, postgresql, redis or memcached. * Go programming language experience or willingness to learn coding in Go(it'll help us build new k8s operators and improve the existing ones).
