What you'll be doing: The State & Local Tax Manager is a key player supporting the state and local tax compliance and reporting areas that are under the team’s responsibility. This role reports into the Vice President of State & Local Tax and will involve supporting and assisting the team where applicable. The role will primarily focus on the delivery of tax compliance and tax accounting requirements for Man's US business, and developing and maintaining processes necessary for these. The candidate will work directly with the Group's outsourced service providers and with stakeholders across the business. Due to the diverse nature of the business, and the integrated nature of the Man tax department, the role will provide opportunities to work on advisory projects and to gain exposure to different tax regimes and the tax affairs of Man's investment products. Primary Responsibilities * Managing external service providers responsible for Man’s US federal/state/local tax compliance and reporting. Candidate will be responsible for ensuring timely preparation of deliverables, reviewing for accuracy, supporting internal stakeholders to provide any information required by service providers, and assisting in maintaining relationships with those service providers. * Ownership of any US tax reporting performed in house by the Man tax department, including calculating/ensuring accuracy of any necessary tax payments. * Working with stakeholders across Man to develop, document, and maintain processes for generate information necessary for tax reporting, and to control tax risk. Candidate will be expected to help drive change and innovation by utilizing AI and other tools, with an emphasis on automation and information standardization. * Managing strategic tax projects, and keeping senior stakeholders informed of proposed and actual changes in tax law/practice relevant to Man’s US business. * Forecasting US tax liabilities and tax cash flows for entities within Man’s US business. * Supporting the preparation of current and deferred income tax provisions under ASC 740 and IAS 12, and interacting with auditors as necessary. * Providing critical support and technical expertise to internal and external stakeholders on all topics relating to US tax (including personal/employment taxation, state sales and use taxes, other taxes assessed by states and localities), including supporting colleagues across the broader Man tax team (including, as required, Man’s product tax team). * Managing communication with US tax authorities, drafting responses to correspondence and working with relevant stakeholders to resolve controversies. Core Competencies * A strong understanding of US federal tax law, and a good appreciation of the broader US federal, state and local tax implications for a large, complex, foreign owned financial services business. * A strong understanding of international topics in US federal taxation (e.g. BEAT, CFCs/PFICs, GILTI, ECI, withholding taxes, transfer pricing), familiarly with the US model income tax treaty and its practical application, and the ways in which US tax systems interact with their non-US counterparts. * Experience preparing federal business tax returns (e.g. 1120, 1065) and accompanying forms/schedules, and their state equivalents. * A strong understanding of ASC 740 and accounting for income taxes. Experience with IAS 12/IFRS preferred. * The ability to independently research complex tax issues and effectively communicate key points to non-subject matter experts. * Experience of tax process improvement and project management. * Familiarity with the asset management industry and alternative investments, the ways in which an asset manager and its owners are compensated, and the tax implications thereof, is a strong plus. * Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to the needs of specific stakeholders. * The ability to both work independently and with a wide range of stakeholders, as necessary. The role involves establishing and maintaining tax compliance processes, providing proactive tax advisory to the investment team, and ensuring the funds' tax positions are optimized. Key Skills & Experience: * 5+ years of tax experience in asset management, public accounting (Big 4 preferred), or a combination thereof. * Deep knowledge of tax compliance for non-Section 475(f) hedge funds, including partnership taxation, investor allocations, tax lot accounting, cost basis reporting, straddles and wash sale management, and the treatment of capital gains/losses vs. ordinary income/losses for complex financial instruments. * Experience with tax aware or tax-managed investment strategies — understanding how investment decisions impact after-tax outcomes and the ability to translate tax rules into actionable guidance for portfolio managers (e.g., tax-loss harvesting, wash sale management, holding period optimization, short-term vs. long-term gain/loss positioning).. * Strong expertise in complex financial instruments and transactions, including derivatives, swaps, straddles, Section 988, Section 1256 contracts, wash sales and constructive sale rules. * Knowledge of commingled fund structures and separately managed accounts. * Knowledge of the nuances in tax treatment for Fixed Income, Equity, and Derivative products. * Experience working at an Investment Manager/Advisor preferred. * CPA and/or MScT (Master of Science in Taxation) strongly preferred. * Excellent Microsoft skills (PowerPoint, Excel, and Word). * Strong communication skills, strong business knowledge, and ability to multitask. * A team player who is also comfortable taking individual ownership. * Ability to communicate effectively with multiple senior stakeholders, including portfolio managers, legal, and compliance.
