ABOUT THE ROLE You’ll join a small, passionate team of Rubyists, taking ownership of complex projects from concept to deployment. Alongside writing maintainable, well-tested code, you’ll help define technical direction, guide architectural decisions, and mentor engineers as we scale. Our work spans diverse domains including billing, CRM to public APIs, reporting, integrations, and internal tooling You’ll have the freedom to specialise or lead initiatives in the areas that interest you most. We’re pragmatic, not dogmatic — we balance moving fast with building for the long term. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES * Lead the design and development of complex features from concept to deployment. * Collaborate with product and stakeholders to define scope, refine requirements, and ensure solutions meet business goals. * Make sound architectural decisions to keep our Rails app maintainable, performant, and scalable. * Dedicate time (at least 20%) to improving stability, performance, and developer experience. * Maintain a strong automated test suite so we can confidently deploy to production multiple times per day. * Proactively monitor, investigate, and resolve production issues, driving preventative improvements. * Mentor and support engineers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing. OUR TECHNOLOGY STACK We take a majestic monolith approach — keeping our Rails app clean, cohesive, and aligned with Ruby community best practices. * Backend: Rails 8, PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq, TimescaleDB * Frontend: Turbo 8, targeted React for richer UI, ViewComponents, Sass, BEM methodology * Testing: Minitest, Capybara, Playwright * Payments: Stripe Connect and Billing * Deployment: GitHub Actions, Heroku WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR * Proven track record designing, building, and scaling production Rails applications. * Strong command of Rails fundamentals — ActiveRecord, background jobs, request/response cycle — and how to apply them effectively. * Experience architecting maintainable systems that balance speed of delivery with long-term sustainability. * Comfortable working across the stack, including frontend technologies (JavaScript, CSS). * Skilled at using modern LLM-powered tools to accelerate work and explore solutions — with the judgement to know when to rely on your own expertise. * Strong testing mindset, with hands-on experience in Minitest or RSpec. * Confident debugging and resolving complex production issues. * Skilled mentor with the ability to grow and support other engineers. * Clear communicator, able to articulate technical challenges, trade-offs, and decisions. QA Engineer (Contract)

The Role We’re looking for a QA Engineer to join our engineering team in Belfast, helping ensure the quality of the software we deliver across a range of projects. This is a hands-on role where you’ll focus on building out automation, improving test coverage, and working closely with engineers to make quality part of the development process, not something that happens at the end. You’ll be working in fast-moving, agile teams, contributing to how we test, release, and continuously improve the systems we build. What You’ll Be Doing * Build and maintain automated tests for web-based applications using tools like Playwright * Automate tests across both user interfaces and backend services * Expand and maintain automated regression test suites to support reliable releases * Integrate testing into CI/CD pipelines to support continuous delivery * Contribute to test strategies and quality approaches across projects * Set up and manage test environments and test data as required * Identify defects, track them through to resolution, and help ensure root causes are understood * Communicate testing progress, risks, and outcomes clearly to the wider team * Participate fully in agile ceremonies, contributing to planning, refinement, and continuous improvement What We’re Looking For * 5+ years’ experience in a QA or software testing role * Strong experience with test automation strategies for web applications * Experience working with test frameworks in Playwright (or similar tools) * A good understanding of different testing types (functional, integration, regression, etc.) * Experience working in agile, delivery-focused teams * Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and version control tools (e.g. GitHub, Jenkins or similar) * Strong attention to detail and a pragmatic approach to testing * Clear communication skills and the ability to work closely with engineers and stakeholders Nice to Have * Experience testing cloud-based systems (AWS or similar) * Exposure to API or service-level testing * Experience of using AI tools to support testing efforts * Familiarity with performance or non-functional testing approaches * An interest in improving QA processes and tooling * Experience working across multiple projects or client environments Please note: We offer flexible hybrid working, but candidates should be based in Northern Ireland and able to attend our Belfast office when required. Data Engineer (Python/ AWS)

The Role We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join a team building and evolving a modern cloud-based data platform. This is a hands-on role focused on designing, building, and improving data pipelines and services, while also contributing to API design and occasional frontend work where needed. You’ll work across the stack, primarily in Python and AWS, helping to deliver reliable, well-structured data and making it easier for teams to ingest, access, and use it. The focus is on practical delivery: building ingestion and transformation pipelines, exposing data through APIs, and supporting a platform that removes bottlenecks and enables better use of data across the organisation. What You’ll Be Doing * Design, build, and maintain ETL / ELT pipelines in production environments * Develop ingestion and egress patterns to support reliable data access and integration * Work with structured and semi-structured data (e.g. JSON, Parquet) * Build and maintain data models across a cloud data platform * Design and implement APIs to expose data for downstream consumers * Contribute to cloud-based data platform development in AWS * Support lightweight frontend work (React / TypeScript) for data-focused tools where needed * Implement observability practices (logging, monitoring, tracing) across data pipelines and APIs * Improve reliability, performance, and failure handling across the platform * Collaborate with engineers and analysts to deliver data that supports reporting and operational use cases What We’re Looking For * Experience building and supporting data platforms or pipelines in production * Strong Python skills for data processing, transformation, and pipeline development * Strong SQL skills, including complex queries and performance optimisation * Experience with ETL / ELT design and implementation * Experience working with AWS data services * Experience working with a cloud data warehouse (e.g. Snowflake, Redshift, or similar) * Experience designing and implementing APIs * Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work with evolving requirements * Good communication skills and experience working in cross-functional teams Nice to Have * Experience with TypeScript or JavaScript * Experience contributing to frontend applications (React) * Familiarity with observability tooling (logging, monitoring, tracing) * Experience with data modelling and metadata management * Exposure to CI/CD practices for data pipelines and services * Experience working in delivery-focused, agile environments Why Join Instil?
