We’re not about selling products - we want to solve problems and change lives through Monzo ❤️ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 📍London or Remote (UK) | 💰 Base salary £170k - £225k + Equity + Benefits Monzo is on a mission to build technology that connects the world. We are more than a platform; we are a global infrastructure that millions of people rely on for their daily lives, finances, and communication. This puts us in an incredibly unique position. We are the custodians of immense amounts of sensitive financial data as well as people’s money that are highly attractive to sophisticated adversaries and state-level actors. Monzo has always adopted a Secure by Design model. We believe that security is not a function, but is instead a fundamental property of high-quality engineering. We have a world-class team of software and security engineers who ensure our platform is inherently secure and resilient, and we achieve that by making our security principles an invisible part of the developer experience. The Role The Engineering Director, Security will be a senior leader within our global Security organisation, partnering directly with the CISO and other senior engineering leaders. You will lead an organisation of 30–50 engineers and leaders to define and deliver a strategy that protects our global footprint. We’re looking for a deeply technical software engineering leader who has built and led high performing infrastructure, platform, or distributed systems engineering organisations and can apply those skills to one of Monzo’s most important engineering challenges: making security an embedded, invisible property of how we build software. You do not need to come from a traditional security background. We care more about exceptional engineering leadership, organisational design, platform thinking, and strong technical judgement than deep specialisation in security. What you'll do * Drive the secure-by-design mandate, leading the transition from reactive security to proactive architectural invariants. Your goal is to ensure that our core platform primitives - compute, storage, networking and identity - are built with inherent security properties that cannot be bypassed. * Eliminate systemic risk by identifying fundamental, cross-cutting security problems and driving major software engineering improvements to solve them at the root. * Partner with product and software engineering teams to embed a healthy security culture into Monzo’s product development process. * Cultivate an engineering-first culture, fostering a culture where security engineers are, first and foremost, software engineers. You’ll ensure your teams are delivering high-leverage tools and frameworks that enable the data and software engineering disciplines to move at the speed-of-thought, without compromising security. * Manage a high-performing group of software engineering leaders and senior individual contributors, nurturing a diverse organisation that thrives on solving the world’s most complex security challenges. * Collaborate with software engineering managers and engineering leaders to contribute to company-wide security best practices and standards. * Form a close alliance with the CISO, CTO, and Product leaders to advise on the long-term health of the business, ensuring our security roadmap is aligned with our global mission. Responsible for the engineering effectiveness and operational excellence of your teams, setting a high bar for performance, rigour, and inclusive leadership. What we are looking for We are looking for a leader who has been in the weeds of technical detail and has moved into high-scale leadership without losing their technical edge. This is not a traditional Head of Security or CISO-style role, and we are intentionally looking beyond career security specialists. Strong candidates may come from software engineering, distributed systems, developer platforms, infrastructure engineering, or large-scale backend product engineering backgrounds. You do not need to have spent your career in security. What matters most is exceptional engineering leadership, strong technical judgement, and experience building highly reliable, secure-by-default software systems at scale. Whilst this role doesn’t require deep specialist security expertise, we’re looking for: * Architectural authority: You possess the technical depth to understand and challenge complex engineering decisions. You can lead a room of Principal Engineers through a deep-dive into distributed systems, or cryptographic trust boundaries. * Proven leadership: You have a track record of leading engineering organisations of 30–50 people in a high-growth, top-tier tech environment. You know how to structure teams for maximum impact and autonomy. * Software engineering experience: You likely spent the first half of your career as a Senior or Staff Engineer. You have a deep understanding of how systems are built. * Outcome-obsessed: You prioritise high-leverage work over process for process’s sake. You understand that good security looks like a platform that is secure by default, not a long list of compliance tickets. * Empathy & inclusion: You have a high degree of emotional intelligence and a relentless drive to create an inclusive, blameless team environment where everyone can do their best work. * Decisiveness in ambiguity: You are comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy, making high-stakes decisions in fast-moving, often time-sensitive scenarios. Recruiter Call (30 mins) You'll meet our Engineering Leadership Recruiter to discuss your experience and learn more about Monzo. They'll be your partner and guide throughout the interview process. 2. Initial Call (1 hour) You'll meet with our VP of Engineering. They'll ask you about your previous experience, in particular people leadership, product delivery and technical leadership. They’ll ask example based questions (‘Tell me about a time when…’) 3. Loop Stage - This is one stage with 4 interviews (totalling 4 hours) split between a collaboration with one of our engineers on a technical exercise, as well as execution and leadership interviews. At all stages we’ll create space for you to ask as many questions as you have, you’re interviewing us as well! Our average process takes around 3-4 weeks but we will always work around your availability. Our customers borrow money to achieve something in their lives — whether that’s making a big life event affordable, buying something they need now without affecting their monthly budget, or getting by until payday. We’re shaping this mission by building products our customers love, while safely scaling some of Monzo’s biggest revenue lines. Borrowing is one of Monzo’s most complex and fastest-growing domains. We operate 12+ products across multiple geographies, underpinned by 1,700+ data models and an analytics engineering team that’s scaling to match. We’re in the middle of a major data architecture transformation, expanding into new markets, and building the next generation of data infrastructure to support it all. We’re looking for a Staff Analytics Engineer to help shape how Borrowing builds and uses data at scale. Reporting to the Borrowing Data Director, you’ll work across product, credit, engineering, Data Platform, and analytics engineering teams to turn complex technical problems into clearer systems, stronger data products, and better business decisions. 🔑 You’ll play a key role by… * Architecting Borrowing’s data layer at scale. Partnering across Analytics Engineering, Product, Engineering, Credit, and Data Platform to shape how 1,700+ models across 12+ products are structured, connected, and evolved. You’ll set shared patterns that help teams build trusted, consistent, and scalable data products across Borrowing. * Designing and governing data products. Moving us beyond ad-hoc tables toward well-defined, contractual data assets with clear ownership, SLAs, documentation, and interfaces. You’ll work with teams across Borrowing and Data Platform to define what makes a Borrowing dataset “production-grade” and consumable by analytics, ML, decisioning, and regulatory teams. * Building feature stores and reusable analytical assets. Identifying cross-product signals (credit behaviour, repayment patterns, affordability, risk indicators) that should be modelled once, tested rigorously, and consumed by many. You’ll design the layer that turns raw product data into curated, versioned features that power models, dashboards, and decisions. * Scaling our analytics engineering infrastructure. Shaping the tooling, patterns, and developer experience that make an 80+ person credit and data organisation more productive. This means influencing our data architecture and ways of working across data and credit disciplines, while partnering with the central Data Platform team to ensure Borrowing’s needs are reflected in ingestion, streaming, and schema contract design. * Driving cross-product data consistency. As we expand across geographies and product lines, ensuring our data models are coherent and comparable. You’ll work with AE leads and domain experts to define shared conventions and abstractions that allow us to reason about Borrowing as a whole, not just product-by-product. * Being a senior technical partner for Borrowing’s data estate. Partnering with backend engineers on source data payload design, with product managers on measurement strategy, with credit teams on decisioning data, and with senior leadership on what’s possible and what’s next. * Leading through influence and leverage. You won’t manage people directly, but you’ll shape how an entire domain builds data. You’ll multiply the impact of AEs across Borrowing by setting the right patterns, unblocking architectural decisions, and raising the bar on what good looks like. 🤩 We’d love to hear from you if… * You think in systems, not just queries. You’ve designed data architectures that span multiple products or domains, and you know how to keep them coherent as they scale. You can take ambiguous problems and turn them into a clear technical direction, delivery sequence, and set of trade-offs. * You’ve built data products, not just data models. You understand the difference between a table that exists and a data asset that’s governed, documented, versioned, discoverable, and trusted. You’ve defined SLAs, contracts, interfaces, or ownership models for data consumers, and you’re excited to do this at scale. * You have deep fluency with analytics engineering systems and infrastructure. dbt at scale, BigQuery or equivalent, CI/CD for data, testing frameworks, and orchestration. You don’t just use these tools, you shape how teams use them. You’ve hit the scaling limits and know what to do about them. * You can design reusable feature layers. You’ve designed, contributed to, or have a clear vision for reusable feature layers that serve multiple consumers, including ML pipelines, dashboards, decisioning engines, and regulatory reporting. You understand the trade-offs between freshness, cost, granularity, correctness, and ease of use. * You’re comfortable at the platform boundary. You can have a productive conversation with a Data Platform engineer about ingestion patterns, streaming vs. batch trade-offs, schema evolution, and infrastructure costs. You don’t need to build the platform, but you need to shape what it delivers. * You connect technical choices to business outcomes. You care about whether data models, feature layers, and platform patterns actually improve decisions. You understand how product, credit, engineering, and operational teams use data, and you use that context to align people around better technical choices. * You lead through others. You create leverage not by writing more SQL, but by setting patterns, reviewing designs, unblocking teams, and raising the standard. You’re energised by making 30+ people more effective, not by being the single expert. * You communicate across altitudes. You can whiteboard a data architecture with a back-end engineer in the morning and present a strategic data roadmap to a director in the afternoon. You adapt your message to your audience without losing precision. * You care about credit products. You’re excited, or curious, about the complexity of lending, including risk, affordability, regulatory constraints, and multi-product dynamics. You see it as a fascinating data domain, not just a business vertical. Interview process Our typical process is structured as: * Recruiter call * Initial call * 3 x 1 hours sessions (final interview) Our average process takes around 3-4 weeks but we will always work around your availability. You will be leading across multiple teams in an org of around 20-30 people. We’re expanding and your role as the Senior EM will be to grow and build new squads as needed. Your direct reports will include Tech Leads, Senior Engineers and 2-3 Engineering Managers. Senior Engineering Managers at Monzo are part of cross-functional, autonomous teams and groups. Our teams are mission driven, and typically include Product Managers, backend, web and mobile engineers as well as data scientists, designers and subject matter experts relevant to that mission. Teams are organised into groups, and then collectives - we aim to keep our line management structure as shallow as possible, and for teams to directly own decision making relevant to their work. Senior Engineering Managers are accountable for the technical and delivery outcomes for their area - that means supporting and developing best in class engineering talent, as well as creating an inclusive team environment for people to do their best work. You’ll be responsible for structuring, organising, supporting and challenging your team to deliver on their mission. You can read more on the expectations of Senior Engineering Managers in our Progression Framework. Is this role right for you? While this is not a role which requires hands-on-coding, we are looking for an experienced manager who has a strong technical and delivery background and has worked as a software engineer in previous roles. We recognise that Senior Engineering Managers lead in different ways, we’re looking for someone who is adept at: * Delivery and Execution: Enjoys taking accountability for delivery across your squad(s), collaborating with the Technical Lead and Product Manager. * Engineering and Operational Excellence: Actively fosters a high bar for engineering excellence within your teams. You’re accountable for the technical outcomes your teams deliver alongside individual engineer performance and growth, so holding a high bar (and clearly articulating your expectations) is key. * People Leadership: Has experience directly managing at least 2-3 Engineering Managers and leading orgs of around ~20 engineers. You can support, coach and develop them through their career with regular 1:1s and continuous feedback. * Technical Influence: Partners with senior engineers to drive technical initiatives that raise the bar for our engineering practices. * Stakeholder Relationships: Builds strong stakeholder relationships with other teams, and creates a focus space for engineers to do their best work. * Organisational Wide Impact: Collaborates with the wider engineering organisation to contribute to company-wide best managerial and technical practices and standards.
