Who is Sonar?
Sonar is driving the future of agent-centric software development. As the leader in AI code review and verification, we solve a critical problem: ensuring that software generated by AI-assisted developers or autonomous agents is reliable, secure, and maintainable.
Integrating seamlessly with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini, and Devin, we help over 75% of the Fortune 100 build trusted, reliable, compliant software. Customers who use Sonar are 44% less likely to report an outage due to AI-generated code.
We believe code verification is the critical missing link in the Agent-Centric Development Cycle (AC/DC). Industry giants like Nvidia, ServiceNow, Booking.com, Goldman Sachs, AstraZeneca, and Ford Motor Company count on us to provide independent, explainable, consistent review and governance of their AI-generated code via products like:
SonarQube: The world’s leading AI code review and verification platform.
SonarQube Foundation Agent: Currently topping the leaderboards for agentic software repair.
SonarSweep & Sonar Context Augmentation: Providing the enterprise-grade context and constraints agents need to be truly effective.
Our team operates across global hubs in Austin, Bochum, Dubai, Geneva, London, Singapore, Tokyo, and Washington D.C. We move with a mindset we call CODE:
Committed to our customers and community.
Obsessed with quality.
Deliberate in our decisions.
Effective as one team.
With over $400M in revenue and profitable, fast-paced growth, we are building the backbone of the AI software revolution. If you’re hungry to have an impact, want to build at a fast pace, and ready to work at the forefront of AI, we want to hear from you.

Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default At Proton, we believe that privacy is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of democracy. Since our inception in 2014, founded by a team of scientists from CERN, we have dedicated ourselves to providing free and open-source technology to millions worldwide, ensuring access to privacy, security, and freedom online. Our journey began with Proton Mail, the largest secure email service globally, and has since expanded to include Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass. These tools empower individuals and organizations to take control of their personal data, break away from Big Tech’s invasive practices, and defeat censorship. Our work impacts hundreds of millions of lives, from activists on the front lines defending freedom to leaders in governments protecting sensitive information. In some cases, Proton’s services have even been instrumental in saving lives by enabling secure and private communications in high-risk situations. Proton is a profitable company that does not rely upon VC funding, supporting over 100 million user accounts with a growing team of over 500 people from over 50 different countries, from the world's top companies and universities. We value intelligence, learning potential, and ambition in our hiring process. Adaptability is key as we navigate uncharted territories and redefine how business is conducted online. Hiring at Proton is highly selective, with less than 1% of candidates hired. We believe smaller teams of exceptional talent will always prevail over larger teams with lower talent density. You will have the opportunity work with many of the world's top minds in their fields, ranging from former international math and science olympiad winners to chess champions. We have a global mindset and big ambitions but remain a start-up at heart. We value empowerment and flexibility and keep our structure flat to keep moving fast and avoid unnecessary politics. Tired of blending into the crowd? Join us and do work you can truly be proud of. Check our open-source projects here! THE DESIGN TEAM Proton's Design team shapes the experience for tens of millions of users across Mail, Drive, VPN, Pass, and Calendar. Designers sit embedded within engineering teams, involved in every stage — ceremonies, scoping, implementation, and testing — not parachuted in at the mockup phase. The team is structured as a guild: high autonomy, significant ownership, and real influence over how the design function itself evolves. We work cross-functionally across product, engineering, and marketing, and we care deeply about visual craft. We're not looking for designers who've drifted toward pure strategy or metrics — this role demands someone who still loves getting their hands dirty and takes personal pride in what ships. If that's where you do your best work, you'll fit here. What you will do * Own design end-to-end across one or more product areas — from scoping and ideation through final specs and QA with engineers * Translate complex privacy and security constraints into experiences that feel simple and trustworthy to non-technical users * Identify UX debt and product gaps with clear recommendations, not just problem statements * Contribute to and enforce the Proton Design System — icons, components, interaction patterns, and visual standards * Work directly with engineers to pressure-test designs against technical constraints before and during build * Define micro-interactions and transitions that serve clarity and feel premium without adding complexity Job requirements Who You Are * 5+ years designing and shipping digital products at scale in a SaaS or tech company — a portfolio demonstrating this is required * Proven ability to deliver end-to-end: concept, flow, visual execution, and handoff — not just high-fidelity mockups * Deep command of visual craft: typography, layout, spacing, color, and hierarchy at a level that raises the bar for everyone around you * Fluent working within technical constraints — you've shipped work that required real trade-offs with engineering, and you pushed for the right outcomes anyway * Experience contributing to a living design system, not just consuming one * Comfortable articulating design rationale to engineers, PMs, and leadership without relying on consensus-seeking Nice to Have * Experience with Rand or comparable large-scale UX research methods * Background designing privacy-respecting alternatives to mainstream social or community platforms What We Offer: * Office First: Collaboration is easier and more effective in person, which is why we have offices in Geneva, Zurich, Prague, Barcelona, Paris, London, Vilnius, Skopje, and Taipei. You can also enjoy working from home up to 30% of the time, while enjoying great company during our three core days in the office. * Technology: We provide all the devices and software you need to excel in your role, ensuring you have the best tools at your disposal to achieve your goals. * Food: Lunch and snacks are provided by Proton every day at our offices. * Transport: We will always support our employees with transport costs through subsidizing public transport, bike allowances, or parking spaces based on your office location. * Stock Options: At Proton, we are all owners of the company and you get stock options when you join us. * Flexible Working: You can define your own working hours as long as it works with team meetings. * Learning and Development: We are committed to your professional growth. Proton offers various learning opportunities, including training programs, conferences and events, and continual learning. * Employee Benefits: Comprehensive health insurance plans, competitive retirement savings options, generous vacation and leave policies, and wellness programs. * Work that Matters: Proton is a community-first organization, started with the support of a crowdfunding campaign and built with community input. To this day, Proton’s only source of revenue is user subscriptions. Over 100 million people trust and support Proton, and we put our users and community first in everything we do. Read more about our impact here. Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion At Proton, we believe diversity drives innovation and strengthens our mission to provide privacy as a default for all. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical ability, or socio-economic background, feel valued and empowered. We strive to create equal opportunities, promote open dialogue, and support continuous learning to ensure every voice is heard and respected. If you need any extra support or reasonable adjustments during the hiring process, please let your talent partner know. JOIN PROTON AND BUILD A BETTER INTERNET WHERE PRIVACY IS THE DEFAULT Proton was founded in 2014 by scientists from CERN on a simple truth: privacy is a fundamental human right. Since then, we've built the world's largest encrypted email service (Proton Mail) and expanded into Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton Calendar — tools used by millions globally to protect their freedom, fight censorship, and keep their data safe. In some situations, Proton has literally helped save lives. We are profitable, independent (no VC control), and selectively hire from the top ~1% of applicants. Our 700+ team members across 50+ countries come from leading organizations and elite academic backgrounds. We move fast, keep hierarchy light, and prioritize impact over optics. If you want to do meaningful work with exceptionally high-caliber people, this is it. Check our open-source projects here. The Role As VP Design, you will own and lead the design function across both Product Design (user experience, interface, service design) and Brand / Marketing Design (visual identity, campaign creative, brand experience). You’ll partner closely with the CEO, VP Marketing and Heads of Product, helping shape strategy, drive design excellence, and ensure that design becomes a core differentiator for Proton. You will build, mentor and scale a high-performing, multi-disciplinary design organisation, embedding design thinking across the company. What you will do • Define and execute the strategic vision for design at Proton, bridging product and brand to deliver a unified and differentiated experience globally. • Lead, develop and grow a world-class design organisation: recruiting designers and researchers structuring teams across product and brand, setting performance metrics, fostering a culture of creativity, craft and user-centricity. • Partner with the CEO, VP Marketing and Heads of Product to ensure design is embedded into strategic roadmaps, product launches, marketing campaigns and brand initiatives. • Oversee the end-to-end design process for all major product lines and brand campaigns: user research, UX/UI, service design, prototyping, testing, visual design, motion, interactive experiences. • Ensure that the Proton brand identity is strong, consistent, scalable and flexible across all touchpoints: digital, mobile, web, marketing, physical, events. • Drive design systems, tools and processes across product & brand to deliver efficiency, quality, consistency and scale. • Advocate for users and privacy-first design principles in everything we build and brand. • Monitor and measure design impact: user experience metrics, brand perception, conversion, retention, campaign effectiveness; iterate and optimise accordingly. • Represent design externally: speak on design at conferences, build Proton’s design reputation, collaborate with creative agencies and partners worldwide. What We’re Looking For • A minimum of 15 + years of experience in design leadership roles (product, brand and/or marketing) at a global technology company or agency. • Proven track record of building, scaling and operating design organisations with cross-functional reach. • Strong experience overseeing both product (UX/UI, service design) and brand/marketing design (visual identity, campaign creative) — not one or the other only. • Demonstrated ability to define and execute design strategy that drives business impact (growth, engagement, retention, brand equity). • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work at executive level and influence across product, marketing, engineering and operations. • Deep user-centred design mindset; strong portfolio showing end-to-end work (research → strategy → UX → UI → brand visuals). • Skilled in designing for global audiences, with sensitivity to cultural differences and brand consistency across markets. • Expertise in building and scaling design systems, establishing best practices and operational processes in fast-growing environments. • Excellent leadership and people development skills: mentoring senior designers, creating high-performing teams, promoting a culture of craftsmanship and innovation. • Comfortable working in a dynamic, high-growth company with a mission-driven ethos and a global, diverse team. • Strong communicator with polished presentation and storytelling skills; fluent in English (other languages a plus). WHAT WE OFFER * Work that Matters: Millions of people trust Proton with their privacy. We answer only to our users — not advertisers, not investors with conflicting agendas, not governments. * A Great Team: Diverse, collaborative, and tight-knit, with people from MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, Cambridge, ETH, and more. * Technology: The right hardware and software to do your best work. * Learning & Development: We invest in your growth. Proton is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your career — real challenges, real ownership, from day one. * Employee Benefits: Strong health coverage, solid retirement options, generous leave, and wellness support. * Stock Options: From day one, you have a real stake in what we're building. When Proton wins, you win. * In-Person Collaboration: Offices across Geneva, Zürich, Barcelona, London, and more. You'll spend most of your time collaborating face-to-face. * Food: Lunch and snacks on us every day in the office. * Transport: We cover public transport, bike allowances, or parking — whichever works for you. * Flexible Working: You own your schedule. Outcomes matter more than clock-in times. OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION At Proton, we believe diversity drives innovation and strengthens our mission to provide privacy as a default for all. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals — regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical ability, or socio-economic background — feel valued and empowered.
