The Department of Business Administration is the largest department at the School of Business, Economics and Law, and conducts extensive research and is responsible for education programmes at first-cycle and second-cycle levels, as well as third-cycle education in the subject areas of Business Administration and Economic Geography. The Department has more than 140 employees and is divided into four sections: Industrial and Financial Management & Logistics (IFEL), Management & Organisation (including Economic Geography), Marketing, and Accounting. The Department also has an administrative and technical unit.

The Department of Business Administration is now looking for an associate senior lecturer in Business Administration, specializing in Marketing. The Marketing Section within the Department of Business Administration at the School of Business, Economics and Law consists of approximately 30 researchers and teachers, including 4 professors. The position as associate senior lecturer constitutes an initial step in the promotion system applied at the department and the faculty.

Subject area description

The Marketing Section has a strong tradition of studying marketing from a holistic perspective and examines the interplay between consumption, markets, and society. Our research includes areas such as consumer culture and consumer behavior, how companies create value, how markets are shaped, sustainability issues, nostalgia, and how cultural and societal dynamics influence consumption and marketing phenomena. The position represents a research investment aimed at further developing the section’s profile through innovative research.

Duties

The position as associate senior lecturer comprises maximum 50% teaching and minimum 50% research.

The research component of the position is linked to the project “Imagination Work and the Mediation of Time in Markets,” which examines how collective imaginations of the past and the future are mediated in consumer culture. By analyzing how imagined futures and reinterpreted pasts are constructed and normalized in mediated market communication, the project contributes to a deeper understanding of the cultural power of marketing.

Teaching is conducted at the undergraduate level, within the master’s program Marketing & Consumption, and in the department’s doctoral education program.

The successful candidate is also expected to actively apply for external research funding during the employment period and to contribute actively to the development of the section and the department’s teaching and research environment, including through physical presence.

Eligibility

Eligibility for appointment as associate senior lecturer is specified in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 4a, Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg Ref. V 2024/3252, and Appointment Regulations for Teaching Staff at the School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg Ref. GU 2025/3441.

To be eligible for appointment as associate senior lecturer, at the time of application the candidate must hold a doctoral degree, or possess equivalent research qualifications, in Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing.

Preference should be given to candidates who were awarded their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence no more than five years prior to the application deadline for this appointment as associate senior lecturer. Those who have completed their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence prior to five years before the application deadline may also be eligible where special grounds exist, i.e., sick leave, parental leave, or similar circumstances.

Assessment criteria

According to the Appointment Regulations for Teaching Staff at the School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg, Ref. GU 2025/3441, the applicant shall be selected for the position who, based on an overall assessment of competence and potential for development, is judged to have the best qualities for performing the duties included in the appointment. In the assessment, particular focus shall be on proven scientific skills and potential for further high-quality research activities during the timespan of the position. Proven pedagogical skills are also merit, as well as an ability to conduct relevant teaching activities during the timespan of the position.

The applicant’s personal qualities, particularly the ability to collaborate internally and externally in carrying out the duties, will also be considered in the assessment of suitability for the position.

Particularly meritorious qualifications include:

Research within core areas relevant to the discipline and the project, such as Consumer Culture Theory, advertising, and branding.

Experience publishing in leading international journals in marketing. Leading journals here refer to journals ranked at level 3–4* in the AJG system or equivalent.

Experience applying qualitative methods to investigate processes in consumer culture, as well as experience analyzing mediated market communication.

Successfully planning and conducting empirical research projects after the PhD, as well as applying for and obtaining research funding.

Teaching at different levels within marketing, including course coordination and pedagogical innovation work.

Ability to communicate in written and spoken Swedish.

Employment

In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen SFS 1993:100) Chapter 4 Section 12a and 12b, an associate senior lecturer may be employed for a period of minimum four years, and at most six years, where the purpose of the appointment is to enable the lecturer to develop

research autonomy and acquire the research and teaching qualifications necessary to fulfil the requirements for another more qualified teacher appointment (such as, senior lecturer).

This position is a fixed term employment of four years, 100% full time. Requirements for scientific qualifications and competence

At the time of application for promotion to Senior Lecturer, the applicant must demonstrate scientific competence and clear progression in research qualifications and achievements during the period of employment as Associate Senior Lecturer. The assessment of progression should consider the duration of the position and the proportion of time allocated to research. The specific assessment criteria are outlined in the advertisement for the position.

The evaluation of scientific competence is based on demonstrated familiarity with the subject area and prior research, creativity and originality in the chosen research orientation, as well as the analytical depth and scope of the applicant’s scientific production, considering the period of activity—particularly during the time as Associate Senior Lecturer.

Within the limitations of the subject area for which promotion is sought, both breadth and depth are important in assessing scientific merits and competence. The degree of progression, independence, and forward-looking development in the research will also be considered.

The assessment of scientific competence primarily involves evaluation of the submitted scientific works, which will be weighted according to their scientific quality.

In addition to the works submitted in the application, the following factors will also be given weight in the overall assessment of the applicant’s scientific merits and competence:

Documented active participation in the scientific community, for example through presentations of research results at national and international conferences and seminars.

Documented contributions to, and assignments within, the scientific community, such as evaluation assignments, referee duties, and participation as a member of expert panels.

Demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate constructively with other researchers.

Demonstrated societal impact of the applicant’s research, exemplified by research-based popular science articles, commissioned reports, or public seminars.

Requirements for teaching qualifications and competence

Completion of higher education teaching and learning training in accordance with the Vice-Chancellor’s decision, or equivalent documented knowledge.

Demonstrated substantial experience of teaching with high quality at the undergraduate and/or master’s level during the period of employment as Associate Senior Lecturer. In the assessment, the duration of the position and the proportion of teaching duties will be considered.

The evaluation of teaching competence includes both an assessment of documented teaching qualifications and an appraisal of the applicant’s potential for further pedagogical development within the subject area of the position. Both quality and versatility in teaching, as well as subject breadth and depth, will be considered, together with the quantitative scope of the applicant’s teaching experience.

In addition to the documented pedagogical education and teaching experience submitted by the applicant, the following factors—listed without order of priority—will also be given weight in the assessment of pedagogical merits and competence:

Postdoctor in translational mucosal biology

We are currently seeking a candidate for a postdoctoral position in colorectal cancer (CRC) research. The project will explore the role of goblet cell-intrinsic mucosal defence systems in determining susceptibility to CRC. The candidate will join a newly established Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM) at the University of Gothenburg (https://wcmtm.gu.se/). As part of this venture, Dr. George Birchenough has established his research group (https://www.birchenoughlab.org/) at the Department of Medical Biochemistry & Cell Biology at the University of Gothenburg. The group works towards a better understanding of how mucosal defence systems control our interactions with the environment, how those systems fail in disease and how they might be prophylactically or therapeutically targeted. The group is part of a large network of researchers at Gothenburg University, most importantly the Mucin Biology Groups cluster (http://www.medkem.gu.se/mucinbiology/) that currently includes over 30 researchers working at the forefront of mucosal biology. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with experts in multiple experimental methods that work within the cluster, as well as more widely with other local and national groups within the WCMTM network. Subject area Translational Mucosal Biology Subject area description Our mucosal surfaces are the interface between the environment and our tissues. Their physiological functions are critical, but necessitate constant exposure of living cells to a vast collection of microbial lifeforms that includes many opportunistic and obligate pathogens. As a result, our mucosa has evolved multiple defensive systems that allow them to endure in this environment, and failure of these systems is often linked to development of acute and chronic disease. Consequently, understanding the development and regulation of these systems is key to understanding the pathoaetiology of mucosal disease and how they can be prevented or treated. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most frequent and lethal types of cancer, and is especially prevalent in nations with a high human development index, indicating that factors associated with a modern, Westernized lifestyle are linked to CRC development. Most cases of CRC result from spontaneous mutations rather than heritable oncogenic mutations, and dysregulated interactions between the intestinal microbiota and immune system are implicated in tumorigenesis. Goblet cell-intrinsic defence systems, such as the mucus layer and sentinel goblet cells normally control host-microbiota interactions, but we have recently found that these systems are highly susceptible to environmental alterations caused by exposure to a Western-style diet. Thus, disruption of goblet cell-dependent functions may have a causal relationship with CRC development. By combining data from pre-clinical mouse models with analysis of samples from healthy and CRC patients, we hope to develop a better understanding of how goblet cell functions contribute to CRC susceptibility and develop new approaches to prevent CRC development. Duties The successful candidate will be expected to work extensively with pre-clinical mouse models and human tissues acquired during routine surgery. The candidate will be encouraged and expected to conduct their experimental research in an independent manner and to make significant contributions to project planning. The candidate will also actively contribute to the local research environment at the Mucin Biology Groups and engage in interactions with collaborators and other groups belonging to the WCMTM network. If necessary, the candidate may also be asked to assist in the supervision of Masters or PhD students.
