POSITION SUMMARY Role: AI driven (Senior) Backend Developer Python Focus: Building and scaling high-quality backend services that power AI models and digital pathology tools. Establishing AI-agentic development workflows. Team: You’ll be part of the development team, working closely with machine learning, product, and front-end colleagues. You will report directly to our VP Engineering. Digital pathology comes with unique technical challenges: whole-slide images with file sizes of several gigabytes and resolutions up to 100,000 x 100,000 pixels. You’ll help design and implement solutions such as efficient image streaming via an advanced image server, ensuring that our AI models can be served reliably to pathologists, labs, and partners worldwide. In this role, you will play a key part in building up Mindpeak’s AI agentic development knowledge, tooling, and workflows. You’ll work on: * Building a new platform for digital pathology using a modern, multi-agent AI coding workflow. * Turning cutting-edge AI models into robust, scalable APIs for real-world clinical use * Building tools and services to automate our data annotation and image processing pipelines * Integrating scanners, image viewers, and lab information systems into seamless, automated workflows * Shaping and scaling AI-supported development workflows across teams * Shaping technical decisions from the ground up in a fast-moving, high-impact environment Your Responsibilities * Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and improve backend services that serve machine learning models in production. * Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code with a strong focus on reliability and performance. * Build automation tools to streamline and optimize our data annotation pipeline. * Work with technologies such as Docker, AWS, Python, and (partially) React to develop best-in-class digital pathology tools. * Integrate existing pathology hardware and software (e.g. scanners, image viewers, LIS) into automated workflows. * Manage your own project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables with a high degree of ownership. * Collaborate closely with product, design, front-end, deep learning, and infrastructure colleagues to keep everything running smoothly. * Select and implement the most effective technical approach for each task. * Build up AI agentic development workflows, including the evaluation and adoption of AI coding agents to improve developer productivity and software quality. * Define best practices for AI-assisted software development and share this knowledge across the organization. YOUR PROFILE Background & Experience * MSc in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. * At least 3–5 years of professional experience with impactful contributions to software products. * Strong track record in backend development with Python. * Experience with Linux and Docker; Linux server administration/operations is a plus. * Extensive experience leading and mentoring junior developers. * Hands-on experience working with AI coding agents or AI-assisted development tools (e.g. agentic coding frameworks, LLM-based developer tools). * Experience in orchestrating AI coding agents * Experience with Google Jules, Cursor or Claude Code Skills & Mindset * Solid software engineering skills; experience with web development (JavaScript and CSS) is a plus. * Curiosity for technical hardware devices and experience interfacing with them via APIs. * Interest in the technological ecosystem of laboratories (e.g. whole-slide scanners, image viewers). * Enjoy working in interdisciplinary teams and “thinking outside the box.” * Able to work independently and drive your own projects forward. * Strong analytical skills and a commitment to continuous learning, mentoring, and knowledge sharing. * Strong interest in AI-driven software engineering and emerging development paradigms. * Willingness to take ownership beyond pure implementation and actively shape how software is built at Mindpeak. * Comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with shifting priorities. * Fluent in English; German is a plus. POSITION SUMMARY As a Senior Machine Learner, you will be part of an interdisciplinary team and become a key driver in building highly accurate image analysis systems and machine learning models for both novel drug development and clinical routine. There are big challenges in the field of digital pathology like demanding accuracy requirements and the large variability of human cells. With your expertise and the possibilities of deep learning and artificial intelligence, you will work on solutions which will take the current healthcare to the next level and help generate a true impact beyond the status quo. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES * Build the world’s best image analysis models in digital pathology using PyTorch. * Create and test prototypes of deep learning methods. * Develop these prototypes into deployed AI software models for our live environment. * Manage, preprocess, and analyze large image datasets for machine learning, and improve our data annotation pipelines for efficiency and quality. * Take the lead in challenging AI projects and inspire other MLers with your ideas and execution. * Collaborate closely with our tech team to build reliable and efficient AI software production systems. * Partner with our medical team to specify data needs for AI development and validation. * Work together with our product managers and pathology experts to develop new customer centric AI product concepts and identify AI requirements.
