Hybrid in London, United Kingdom
We're looking for a Data Scientist to join the iwocaPay Risk Squad
You'll own credit models that decide who iwocaPay can safely fund and on what terms. The team is small, the product is growing,
and you'll shape how risk modelling is built – not just maintain what exists.
The company
Small businesses move fast. Opportunities often don’t wait, and cash flow pressures can appear overnight. To keep going, and
growing, SMEs need finance that’s as flexible and responsive as they are.
That's why we built iwoca. Our smart technology, data science and five-star customer service ensures business owners can act with
the speed, confidence and control they need, exactly when it's needed.
We’ve already cleared the way for 100,000 businesses with more than £4 billion in funding. Our passionate team is driven to help
even more SMEs succeed, through access to better finance and other services that make running a business easier. Our ultimate
mission is to support one million SMEs in their defining moments, creating lasting impact for the communities and economies they
drive.
The function
iwoca's Data Scientists specialise in supervised machine learning, statistical inference and exploratory data analysis, focusing
on tabular and time series data. Our work emphasises quantitative predictions through the analysis of conditional probabilities
and expectations, using medium-sized datasets.
The team
iwocaPay is iwoca's B2B Buy Now Pay Later product. The Risk Squad owns the automated credit decisioning and fraud prevention
models that influence every lending decision the product makes. The squad also handles counterparty risk, portfolio-level
strategy, and ongoing monitoring of losses, chargebacks, and segment performance.
The role
You'll co-own the full credit modelling stack with one other data scientist. You’ll collaborate on model design, review each
other's work, and choose what to prioritise. Your models directly control which small businesses get access to funding, on what
terms, and how far the product can grow.
Complex problems to solve
Work on interesting, open modelling problems rather than maintenance. Improving how the model performs across segments, test more
advanced approaches, and build models from scratch for new products.
Real influence
You own the models end to end, and your decisions carry commercial weight.
Room to develop
A small team on a growing product means broad remit, fast growth, and a say in how the team's pipelines, monitoring, and processes
get built.
The requirements
(exploration through deployment and monitoring).
model is likely to be wrong.
models without well-defined tasks handed to you.
The salary
We expect to pay from £60,000 – £80,000 for this role. But, we’re open-minded, so definitely include your salary goals with your
application. We routinely benchmark salaries against market rates, and run quarterly performance and salary reviews.
The culture
At iwoca, the best idea wins. We model our culture on independent thinking, challenging untested logic, and evidence-based
decisions. We prioritise learning and growth, and give people the autonomy to develop in the direction that makes them most
effective.
We're a tech company and believe in the power of AI to help us work faster and better. We provide the infrastructure where every
iwocan always has access to the best models and where those models have access to all of our data. We will help our people to
learn how to use and grow with the new tools available to them.
The offices
We put a lot of effort into making iwoca a great place to work:
The benefits
unpaid leave.
GROWTH STRATEGY MANAGER - CREDIT COMPASS Hybrid working in London, UK (At least two days in office per week) We’re looking for a Growth Strategy Manager to join our Credit Compass team. THE COMPANY Small businesses move fast. Opportunities often don’t wait, and cash flow pressures can appear overnight. To keep going, and growing, SMEs need finance that’s as flexible and responsive as they are. That's why we built iwoca. Our smart technology, data science and five-star customer service ensures business owners can act with the speed, confidence and control they need, exactly when it's needed. We’ve already cleared the way for 100,000 businesses with more than £4 billion in funding. Our passionate team is driven to help even more SMEs succeed, through access to better finance and other services that make running a business easier. Our ultimate mission is to support one million SMEs in their defining moments, creating lasting impact for the communities and economies they drive. The Team The Credit Compass launched late 2025. Over the last year we’ve improved the product and now have thousands of users and a very strong NPS score. We’re now focused on how we scale acquisition, launch new experiences, and start understanding what iwoca products different segments of credit compass users want to use. YOUR MISSION This role owns cross-sell for Credit Compass. Put simply, the aim is to help more Credit Compass users find an iwoca product that's genuinely right for them, and in doing so grow the value of each visit. A big part of the role is figuring out the right product for the right customer at the right time. That could be a loan, credit card, insurance, iwocaPay, or something entirely new. You'll decide who should see what, when they should see it, and how to make the journey from recommendation to funding feel effortless. The ambition is simple: moving from a Credit Compass user to an iwoca customer should be as easy as booking a flight. It's a hands-on role. You'd spend your time working out where the value and the friction are, testing new products and offers to see what actually works. You’ll work mostly with the credit compass team, a small knit squad of 8 covering engineering, marketing, and design. A few of the questions you'd pick up early on: * Which product suits which customer, and when — and how would we know we'd got that right? * Where are people dropping out of the cross-sell journey, and how much of that is friction we can fix? * What new products or offers should we be testing, and how do we tell quickly whether they're working? RESPONSIBILITIES Your key areas of responsibility will include: * Own the cross-sell funnel end to end: how users move from seeing an offer, to clicking, starting an application then using one of our products. That means owning the metrics, understanding where the drop-offs are, and being responsible for improving them. * Work out who gets offered what, and when: Use customer data and eligibility signals to match products to customers sensibly, design the logic and experience behind that, and check it genuinely improves conversion and value rather than just clicks. You’ll need to evaluate how customers respond to loans, credit cards, insurance, iwocaPay and more. * Run experiments to answer real questions: Design and ship cross tests - then deep dive into the results to decide what to scale, what needs to be fixed, and what the next opportunity might be. Some tests are already running for you to build on. * Make the journeys seamless: Get into the different user journies find the bugs, tracking gaps and friction, and work with engineers to fix them and measure things cleanly, writing clear problem statements and set a high pace for delivery * Help more declined customers get funded: turning insight into a measurable increase in funded customers from the decline pool. * Measure what you ship and iterate: Track how features perform through click rates, activation, drawdown and value per visit, and be as willing to stop something that isn't working as to keep going with something that is. * Use AI to work faster and go deeper: Lean on AI tools to speed up the analysis, testing and spec-writing that used to take much longer - pulling data together, drafting and interrogating queries, REQUIREMENTS * A track record of owning and improving a business metric: you've had a number you were responsible for (conversion, revenue, retention, something commercial) and you've moved it. You think in terms of funnels and value per customer, and you're used to being measured on outcomes rather than outputs * Data scepticism (i.e. having a sense for when something is off): our data is far from perfect, and one of the most valuable things you can do is spot the obvious problems others miss. That means holding the numbers up against real-world context and noticing when they don't add up * Strong data thinking, and a good partner to the people who do the analysis: you'd work closely with our junior analyst/data scientist as a thought partner to help sharpen the framing of their questions, sense checking their approach and analysis, and making sure the numbers translate into sound commercial decisions * Comfortable making decisions with partial information: lot’s of what we’re doing is new so we don’t have all the data we’d like before we have to make decisions. You’ll be able to figure out when to proceed, when to experiment and when to pause based on risk vs. reward (i.e. what’s the expected upside, how reversible is this decision, etc). * Strong pace setter and sense of ownership: you’ll be responsible for delivering improvements for our customers rather than waiting to be told what to do, instinctively unblocking things or pivoting when a project hits a road block. You're comfortable setting a fast pace for yourself, working out the next most useful thing to do, and driving it forward without needing much direction. * Genuinely curious about how changes affect customer behaviour: you like getting into the weeds of specific journeys (watching sessions in Fullstory, speaking to customers or the teams closest to them) to build a hypothesis about why people behave the way they do, and then confirming it with data * Able to bring other teams along with you: at iwoca, people rightly stay focused on their own metrics and areas. So to get things done across Engineering, Ops, CRM and Sales, you'll need to make the case that a change is worth their time, usually by showing it'll improve something they care about. It's less about authority and more about persuading people with facts and data, and getting them genuinely excited to run an experiment with you * Excited about helping small businesses: small businesses are critical to the UK economy and the people who run them are interesting, motivated and brilliantly opinionated people. Caring about the mission matters to us THE SALARY We expect to pay from £70,000 - £90,000 for this role. But, we’re open-minded, so definitely include your salary goals with your application. We routinely benchmark salaries against market rates, and run quarterly performance and salary reviews. The culture At iwoca, the best idea wins. We will help our people to learn how to use and grow with the new tools available to them. The offices We put a lot of effort into making iwoca a great place to work: * Offices in London, Leeds, Berlin, and Frankfurt with plenty of drinks and snacks. * Events and community-led groups, including running groups, padel, and monthly ping-pong and pool competitions. The benefits * Flexible working hours. * Medical insurance from Vitality, including discounted gym membership. * A private GP service (separate from Vitality) for you, your partner, and your dependents. * 25 days’ holiday per year, an extra day off for your birthday, the option to buy or sell an additional five days of annual leave, and unlimited unpaid leave. * A one-month, fully paid sabbatical after four years. * Instant access to external counselling and therapy sessions for team members that need emotional or mental health support. * 3% Pension contributions on total earnings. * An employee equity incentive scheme. * Generous parental leave and a nursery tax benefit scheme to help you save money. * Electric car scheme and cycle to work scheme. * Two company retreats a year: we’ve been to France, Italy, Spain, and further afield. And to make sure we all keep learning, we offer: * A learning and development budget for everyone. * Company-wide talks with internal and external speakers. * Access to learning platforms like Treehouse. FRAUD STRATEGY LEAD – IWOCAPAY We're looking for a Fraud Strategy Lead You'll own the fraud strategy agenda for a B2B payment product that is changing how it delivers digital trade credit. You will design transaction profiling strategies, monitor automated fraud models, and give a small team the direction and context to act on what the data tells us. The team iwocaPay is iwoca's B2B payment product. It lets business buyers pay on trade credit terms while sellers receive payment upfront. The risk squad manages the loss exposure that sits beneath that model: credit risk, fraud and financial crime, disputes, and payment operation failures such as chargebacks. At the moment, the squad runs largely on operational controls. That works, but it means the analytical and operational sides of risk function independently of each other. We are building the capacity to change that – better predictive analytics, a consistent monitoring framework, and an overarching risk strategy. The squad sits within iwocaPay but works closely with iwoca's Risk Modelling team and the broader technical and data science functions. The role As Fraud Strategy Lead, you'll shape how the fraud function is built. The squad currently runs on effective operational controls, but it means the analytical and operational sides work independently of each other. Your challenge is to close that gap: designing transaction profiling strategies, establishing real-time automated decisioning, and defining risk appetite to keep the B2B checkout experience seamless while loss rates stay inside tolerance. You'll set modelling priorities and evaluate automated fraud models alongside embedded data scientists, rather than building from scratch yourself. You'll guide Risk Analysts and work across product and engineering to turn analytical trade-offs into commercial decisions others can act on. Credit policy, model governance, seller counterparty risk – you'll build up the frameworks for a new invoice finance product.. You'll define the standards, judge whether the models meet them, and present a forward-looking strategy that tells Co-Leads and wider leadership what to sequence next. The decisions you make will shape loss rates, approval volumes, and the pace at which a new product scales. The requirements Essential: * Portfolio ownership: You have managed or materially contributed to a credit portfolio of £10 million or more, with accountability for fraud and/or credit loss performance against a defined risk appetite. * Experience delivering fraud strategy in a digital lending, fintech, or payments context, focusing on transaction profiling over manual reviews. * Experience with B2B-specific fraud typologies, such as buyer impersonation, fictitious invoices, or merchant collusion. * Experience managing fraud loss rates against high-velocity transaction volumes, balancing fraud prevention with customer friction to achieve high straight-through approval rates. * Ability to monitor and evaluate automated fraud models, assessing feature quality and guiding data scientists without necessarily needing to build models yourself. * Ability to collaborate across engineering, data science, and product, translating fraud trade-offs into commercial decisions that non-specialists can act on. * Background in mathematics, statistics, economics, or a related quantitative discipline, allowing you to challenge, tune, and evolve risk frameworks. * Uses AI tools to support analysis and decision making, applying strong judgement to ensure accuracy, risk awareness, and sound outcomes. Bonus: * Experience at a B2B pay-later or trade credit business. * Experience assessing seller counterparty risk or merchant risk in a payments or embedded finance context. * Experience building or scaling a risk function during a period of significant product change or volume growth. The salary We expect to pay from £110,000 – £130,000 for this role. But, we’re open-minded, so definitely include your salary goals with your application. We routinely benchmark salaries against market rates, and run quarterly performance and salary reviews. The culture At iwoca, the best idea wins. We model our culture on independent thinking, challenging untested logic, and evidence-based decisions. We prioritise learning and growth, and give people the autonomy to develop in the direction that makes them most effective. We are a tech company, and we use AI where it helps us work faster or better. We expect people to look for useful applications, test them in practice, and use good judgment about when and how to rely on AI.
