Introducing the Trainline App Platform Team 👋
The App Platform team provides the foundations that enable our mobile engineering teams to build, evolve and deliver exceptional
customer experiences at scale. Working across iOS and Android, the team develops the shared capabilities, tooling, frameworks and
engineering practices that help product teams move faster while maintaining high standards of quality, performance and
reliability.
As our Senior Principal Engineer (iOS), you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of iOS engineering at Trainline. While
embedded within the App Platform team, your influence will extend across the wider technology organisation as you define the
long-term technical strategy for iOS alongside peers across Android, Web and Architecture. You'll establish a cohesive
cross-platform architectural vision, balancing platform-specific innovation with opportunities to simplify solutions, increase
consistency and avoid unnecessary duplication. This is a highly influential individual contributor role where you'll create
leverage through technical leadership, partnering with engineers, architects, product, design and senior leaders to solve complex
challenges, shape engineering strategy and raise the technical bar across the organisation.
In this role as the Senior Principal Engineer (iOS), you will...🚄

About Tripadvisor The Tripadvisor Group connects people to experiences worth sharing, and aims to be the world’s most trusted source for travel and experiences. We leverage our brands, technology, and capabilities to connect our global audience with partners through rich content, travel guidance, and two-sided marketplaces for experiences, accommodations, restaurants, and other travel categories. The subsidiaries of Tripadvisor, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRIP), include a portfolio of travel brands and businesses, including Tripadvisor, Viator, and TheFork. The Tripadvisor Experiences Engineering team is distributed across Europe and is responsible for the platform, mobile apps and all their supporting infrastructure. We run the systems that help operators build their businesses and those which enable third parties to utilise our inventory. We provide the tools which help our customer services team provide world class service to travellers and operators internationally. About the role We're looking for a Principal Product Engineer who pairs deep engineering craft with strong product instincts. You'll work across the stack - mobile, web, backend - wherever the highest-leverage problem happens to live that quarter. You don't wait for a perfectly scoped ticket; you partner with product, design, and data to figure out what's worth building, then ship it end-to-end. We expect breadth. We also expect real depth in the mobile app ecosystem - our customer-facing experiences live there. But we're not hiring a mobile only specialist. We're hiring a generalist with mobile chops who can lead an iOS architecture review on Tuesday and untangle a backend latency regression on Wednesday. What you'll do * Identify, scope, and ship the changes that move business metrics - across mobile, web, services, and data layers * Architect long-lasting systems that hold up under real production conditions: performance, reliability, scalability, offline behavior, consistency * Lead technical design reviews across teams, weighing trade-offs not just in code but in product impact, time-to-ship, and operational cost * Drive operational maturity wherever it's weakest - release management, observability, incident response, performance monitoring - including in the mobile apps * Partner with PMs, designers, and engineering leaders to shape what we build, why, and in what order; you're a peer in those conversations, not a downstream implementer * Set the technical bar for the org by example: write the prototype, prove the pattern, then teach it * Communicate trade-offs clearly to engineers, product partners, and senior stakeholders What we're looking for * 10+ years of software experience, with significant time still spent hands-on in code - track record of shipping product-impacting work end-to-end, not just owning a layer * Real depth in the mobile app ecosystem (iOS and/or Android, with strong fluency in Swift and/or Kotlin and the surrounding ecosystem - offline sync, push, auth, persistence, networking, REST/GraphQL) - and credible breadth beyond it * Demonstrated breadth: you've worked seriously in at least one of {web frontend, backend services, data/infra, platform tooling} alongside mobile, and can hold your own in code review there * Strong product judgment: you've made calls about what not to build, and can defend them with evidence * Comfort troubleshooting in production across stacks - crash analysis, latency tracing, release-health debugging * Excellent cross-functional collaboration; you make the people around you better Nice to have * Background in marketplaces, bookings, or other transactional consumer products * Time spent close to data - experimentation, analytics instrumentation, or ML-adjacent work Our Cultural Pillars: Traveler first We exist to create value for our customer, the traveler. We enable our suppliers and partners to unlock this value. Their collective behaviors and insights are what drives us. Execution is our edge We act fast, experiment, learn from failure, iterate, and improve the solutions of tomorrow across every aspect of our business. Our execution is agile, data-driven, prioritised, and built to scale. We assume no problem is someone else’s problem and finish what can be done today, knowing tomorrow will bring fresh challenges. We succeed together The best outcomes are driven by empathic, humble, and diverse subject matter experts working toward shared goals. We collaborate relentlessly, challenge assumptions, give actionable feedback, and set each other up for success through empowered teams with a clear charter. We transparently take ownership of our growth, individually and as a team. We celebrate the quality of our effort, our learnings, and our collective achievements. We strive to create an accessible and inclusive experience for all candidates. Hello. We’re Teya. Teya was founded on a simple belief: local businesses deserve better. They are the cafés, restaurants, salons, shops and entrepreneurs that bring character to our high streets, create jobs and keep communities moving. Yet for too long, financial services has made life harder for them - with clunky tools, poor support and complexity that gets in the way of running a business. Teya exists to change that. We’re building a financial platform for local businesses across Europe - one built around simple tools, thoughtful design and real human support. Our Members rely on us to help them run their business with confidence, and that responsibility shapes the way we work. We move fast. We care about quality. We stay close to the detail. And we believe great performance and genuine hospitality should go hand in hand. If you want to build meaningful products, solve real problems and make a genuine difference for local businesses, we’d love to hear from you YOUR MISSION Small businesses are the backbone of our communities — yet they remain underserved by traditional banks and legacy payment providers. As a Principal Backend Engineer, you will play a defining role in changing that. Your mission is to design and build the resilient, scalable fintech infrastructure that underpins our most critical business initiatives. This isn’t about owning a single service — it’s about owning outcomes. You will drive the technical success of the platforms that power payments, merchant onboarding, transaction processing, and operational workflows across Europe. You’ll operate at the intersection of engineering and business strategy, shaping systems that must be secure, compliant, highly available, and capable of scaling with rapid growth. The decisions you make will directly influence how quickly we can launch new products, enter new markets, and serve thousands of merchants. This role goes beyond technical leadership. You will define and evolve the architectural foundations that multiple teams depend on, bringing clarity to ambiguity and ensuring our most important initiatives succeed. WHAT YOU’LL DO * Own and drive the architecture behind our most critical platforms, ensuring they scale with the business and unlock new capabilities * Design and evolve high-scale, cloud-native systems powering payments and merchant experiences * Lead the development of resilient, secure, and compliant services for high-volume transaction processing * Shape and drive adoption of modern backend practices (Java 17/21, Spring Boot 3, Kotlin, clean architecture) * Architect event-driven systems (Kafka) that enable scalable, decoupled domains across teams * Define and enforce standards for API-first development (REST/gRPC) and domain-driven design (DDD) * Set the bar for availability, performance, fault tolerance, and observability across critical systems * Partner deeply with Product, Data, and leadership to translate business priorities into scalable technical strategy * Lead cross-organisational initiatives that are essential to company growth and market expansion * Influence engineering direction through hands-on contribution, design leadership, and mentorship * Bring structure to ambiguity across technical, regulatory, and operational domains WHAT YOU BRING * 8+ years of experience building and operating distributed, production-grade backend systems * Proven track record operating at Senior Staff or Principal level, driving architecture across multiple teams or domains * Deep expertise in Java (17+), Spring Boot, and modern backend engineering practices * Strong experience with microservices, event-driven architecture, and asynchronous systems * Experience building systems for high throughput, low latency, and reliability, ideally in fintech or transaction-heavy environments * Strong grounding in system design, data structures, and performance trade-offs * Hands-on experience with AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes in production environments * Proven ability to implement observability, resilience patterns, and CI/CD best practices * Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and align stakeholders * A track record of mentoring senior engineers and leading through ambiguity The Perks * We trust you, so we offer flexible working hours, as long it suits both you and your team; * Physical and mental health support through our partnership with GymPass giving free access to over 1,500 gyms in the UK, 1-1 therapy, meditation sessions, digital fitness and nutrition apps; * Our company offers extended and improved maternity and paternity leave choices, giving employees more flexibility and support; * Cycle-to-Work Scheme; * Health and Life Insurance; * Pension Scheme; * 25 days of Annual Leave (+ Bank Holidays); * Office snacks every day; * Friendly, comfortable and informal office environment in Central London. Teya is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, or background can thrive and do their best work. We believe that a diverse team leads to better ideas, stronger outcomes, and a more supportive workplace for all. If you require any reasonable adjustments at any stage of the recruitment process whether for interviews, assessments, or other parts of the application—we encourage you to let us know. We are committed to ensuring that every candidate has a fair and accessible experience with us.
