We think applying functional programming techniques like compositionality and type-safety is the best way to build the type of
massively distributed system our platform comprises, allowing us to move fast without sacrificing quality.
About the Role
We're looking for a Staff Applied Scientist to own optimisation across our platform. You'll be the domain authority on how we use
data to make campaigns perform better — from how audiences are composed and scored, to how inventory is priced and allocated, to
how campaigns are tuned over their lifetime.
The scope is broad: campaign optimisation, audience quality modelling, lookalike improvement, and measurement all fall within your
remit. You'll work across teams, identifying which problems to solve, designing the approaches, and owning the models through to
production.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role with broad scope and real autonomy. You'll operate across the full platform, with the
freedom to identify the highest-leverage problems and design the approaches to solve them. You'll shape what we build and have a
seat at the table when we make product and strategy decisions.

What we’re offering…
We take a structured, objective approach to salary-setting, which is based on marketing information, our compensation strategy,
and your experience and capability assessed through our interview process. For a typical candidate who meets our requirements, we
pay a base salary of £180,000 - £204,000.

We are working with water companies, NGOs and local councils to design and deliver large-scale nature restoration projects that improve outcomes in flooding, drought and water quality. YOUR MISSION We’re seeking a versatile and outcome-focused researcher with expertise in sciences relating to water supply management, flooding, hydrology, or hydraulic modeling to develop novel and scalable nature-based solutions approaches for grand challenges in the water space. In this role you will combine the best in academic research with industry tech to develop novel models and methods to which improve water outcomes by restoring ecosystems. Your models and insights will inform real-world landscape regeneration projects, improve biodiversity outcomes, and address the impacts of climate change. Working closely with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and field practitioners, your work will have a real positive impact on people and the planet. As part of our R&D team, you will work under our Head of Applied Science and our Senior Water Scientist to quantify how nature-based solutions can help mitigate drought and flooding at multiple spatial scales - from landholding to catchment and landscape scales. You will build scalable modeling approaches that can be applied nationally and internationally. In due course, you’ll develop approaches to integrating hydrological and hydraulic models with other types of natural process models (such as models relating to soils, peat and biodiversity), and climate model data. You will: * Apply remote sensing data, in situ data, and hydrological and hydraulic models to understand water dynamics at the catchment and sub-catchment scales. * Co-design landscape interventions to reduce flood risk, mitigate drought, improve water quality, and build new habitats in collaboration with your science team colleagues and our team of field experts. * Gather ground-truth data to validate desk-based model analytics. * Develop partnerships and collaborations with academic research groups, water companies, and other businesses in the field of water science. * Contribute to improving internal models and research on nature restoration. * Apply your geospatial knowledge and skills to solving other landscape-level scientific challenges. * Mentor junior science staff and regularly supervise interns. YOUR PROFILE Requirements: * A passion for making a positive impact on the planet and solving grand environmental challenges * A PhD, or equivalent level of experience, in a discipline related to catchment scale hydrology, nature-based solutions, water science, hydraulic modeling, hydrogeology, physics, remote sensing, engineering, or other similar fields. * Experience working in Python * Knowledge of processing techniques and manipulation of GIS datasets: proficiency in GIS mapping data and software, and experience in geospatial data analysis. * Experience using relevant geospatial data types, such as LiDAR and land cover. * Proactive, methodical, and data-driven approach to problem-solving. * Enthusiasm for working collaboratively with teams comprising different scientific and non-technical backgrounds * The ability to communicate complex technical topics effectively to a non-technical audience Nice to haves: * Experience or expertise in hydraulic or hydrological models, hydrogeology or ground water, soil science, or nature-based solutions relating to these * Experience with AWS or other cloud computing environments, and large geospatial datasets (e.g. using cloud-optimised format, manipulating high-resolution spatial data, etc.) * Experience or expertise in natural capital assessment WHY US? STAFF SOFTWARE ENGINEER At UnlikelyAI, we are building the future of AI: one that is reliable, accurate, and transparent. Our neurosymbolic technology harnesses the power of LLMs and generative AI, and combines it with Universal Language – our proprietary symbolic technology that bridges the gap between probabilistic machine learning and deterministic classical computing. Our products are already in use with major enterprises – including tier-1 banks and leading accountancy firms – across audit, compliance, and financial services. In compliance, we combine symbolic decision trees with LLM-powered evidence extraction to catch errors in financial reporting that human reviewers miss. In financial services, we use neurosymbolic guardrails to deliver accurate and explainable outcomes at scale. We are now building toward a platform – a public API and platform experience that will make our core neurosymbolic capabilities available to a broader set of customers and use cases. This is a pivotal moment: we're transitioning from bespoke customer engagements into a scalable product platform, and we need exceptional engineers to help us get there. THE ROLE We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help shape the technical direction of our platform as we scale. This is a role for someone who combines deep hands-on engineering ability with the judgement and influence to drive architecture and engineering quality across teams. You'll be one of our most experienced individual contributors – someone the team looks to for guidance on hard technical decisions, system design, and long-term technical strategy. You'll spend most of your time writing code and solving complex problems, but you'll also be expected to identify the highest-leverage work across squads, mentor other engineers, and raise the bar for how we build software. Our core capabilities span symbolic reasoning (decision trees, propositional graphs, knowledge graphs), document ingestion pipelines, and the APIs that expose these to customers. You'll work on genuinely novel problems at the intersection of classical symbolic AI and modern LLMs – for example, how to represent regulatory knowledge as machine-evaluable rules, or how to build feedback loops that improve system accuracy over time. You'll work within a shared monorepo alongside software engineers, research engineers, and applied scientists in a heavily cross-functional environment. We operate in small, focused product teams, supported by shared infrastructure, internal tooling, and an R&D function. WHAT YOU MIGHT WORK ON In your first months, you could find yourself working on any of the following: * Defining the architecture for our new public API – making foundational decisions about authentication, scalability, versioning, and developer experience that will shape the platform for years. * Leading the design and implementation of our document ingestion pipelines to handle new input formats (e.g. PDF, Word) and new regulatory jurisdictions at scale. * Designing evaluation frameworks and benchmarks to measure and improve system accuracy – and establishing these as engineering norms across teams. * Driving improvements to our deployment architecture for enterprise customers with specific cloud and security requirements. * Owning the technical strategy for internal tooling and developer experience across the monorepo – identifying bottlenecks and leading initiatives to address them. * Working on the symbolic reasoning engine that powers our products – including decision tree evaluation, rule generation, and knowledge graph construction. * Identifying and leading cross-cutting technical initiatives that improve reliability, performance, or engineering velocity across the organisation.
