DEINE MISSION As part of our Avionics & Software team in Munich, you will help define and mature the avionics and electrical systems of our spacecraft platforms. You will translate mission and spacecraft-level needs into clear requirements, interfaces and equipment decisions. Working closely with our Systems Architects and specialist teams in electronics, embedded software and controls, you will ensure that avionics equipment and subsystems form a coherent and verifiable overall system. This is a systems engineering role with a strong technical focus. You are not expected to be the implementation expert for every avionics domain. Your role will include * Define, manage and maintain spacecraft avionics and electrical system requirements. * Coordinate interfaces between spacecraft equipment, electronics, embedded software, control systems and higher-level spacecraft functions. * Support avionics architecture development together with Systems Architects and technical specialists. * Perform and document equipment and make-or-buy trade studies, for example for OBCs, PCDUs, solar arrays, sensors, communication equipment and remote I/O. * Translate selected equipment into clear electrical, data and software interface requirements. * Develop and maintain interface control documents, architecture descriptions and verification concepts. * Coordinate technical topics with suppliers and assess compliance, development status, risks and open points. * Support proposal activities through requirements analysis, preliminary architectures, supplier inputs, effort estimates and technical risk assessments. * Support subsystem and spacecraft-level integration, verification and troubleshooting. * Contribute to MBSE models and continuously improve our systems engineering processes. DEIN PROFIL * Several years of experience in spacecraft avionics, electrical systems or a comparable safety-critical engineering environment. * Experience in requirements engineering, interface definition and technical trade studies. * Broad understanding of spacecraft avionics and electrical equipment, without the expectation of being a specialist in every domain. * Ability to work effectively with electronics, software, controls and systems engineering teams. * Experience working with suppliers and evaluating technical proposals or equipment. * Familiarity with verification planning, integration testing and relevant systems engineering standards such as ECSS. * Strong analytical and communication skills, with a structured and accountable way of working. * Motivation to develop systems for space logistics and orbital servicing. Nice to have * Experience with spacecraft power systems, data handling, sensors or communication equipment. * Experience with MBSE tools and methods. * Familiarity with SiL, HiL or spacecraft system integration. * Experience with autonomous spacecraft, RPOD or fluidic systems. Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run. Our In-Orbit Services unit is dedicated to expanding and complementing these capabilities by conceptualizing and developing new technologies, products and programs. We are seeking a methodical Fault Management Engineer to help us strike the right balance between performance and reliability. The In-Orbit Services Fault Management Engineer is responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety of orbital service vehicles and systems. This role is central to the design, development, and operational assurance of in-orbit service missions, supporting both technical risk reduction and mission success. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Fault Management Strategy: * Define, implement and validate fault management strategies, including Failure Detection, Isolation, and Recovery (FDIR) logic for in-orbit service vehicles. * Coordinate between hardware and flight software teams to architect robust and lean fault management solutions. * RAMS Analyses & Assurance: * Lead the definition and execution of fault tree analyses (FTA) and Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analyses (FMECA) to identify and mitigate potential failure modes. * Perform reliability and availability prediction studies and allocate reliability targets to subsystems and equipment. * Conduct hazard analyses for ground, orbital, and re-entry phases, ensuring compliance with relevant safety requirements, including the safety analysis for launch authorities. * Continuous Improvement: * Collect and analyze in-orbit data to inform lessons learned and drive improvements in fault management and overall system reliability. * Support the creation and improvement of RAMS analysis tools and technical documentation. * Collaboration & Communication: * Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams (mechanical, thermal, avionics, software, operations, systems) to integrate RAMS and fault management requirements throughout the project lifecycle. * Prepare and present technical data, recommendations, and reports to internal and external stakeholders. WHAT WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE FROM YOU In the role of In-Orbit Services Fault Management Engineer, ideally you will have the following: * Education: Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in engineering, aerospace, or a related field; specialization in electronics, system engineering or fault management is a plus. * Technical skills: Proficiency in reliability tools (FMECA, FTA, reliability block diagrams) and fault management methodologies. * Experience: Hands-on experience with spacecraft FDIR strategy definition and validation planning and execution. * Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. * Feedback: Willingness to give proactive and mindful feedback across all company levels. * Mindset: Highly motivated to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding start-up environment. * Languages: Fluent in English. The Exploration Company is seeking a highly skilled Spacecraft Flight Computing Engineer with expertise in real-time, fault-tolerant computer systems running a RTOS and/or Linux. This role is focused on hands-on hardware and software development, with an emphasis on building systems resilient to radiation effects in space environments. The engineer will also apply knowledge of IP networking, including Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and Precision Time Protocol (PTP), to enable deterministic, synchronized communication across spacecraft subsystems. Key Responsibilities * Design, implement, and maintain real-time embedded computing systems for spacecraft avionics. * Apply fault-tolerant computing techniques to ensure reliable operation in the presence of radiation-induced upsets and anomalies. * Develop and optimize our RTOS and Linux-based real-time operating environments, including kernel configuration, bootloader, device drivers, and system-level performance tuning. * Perform hardware design tasks, including schematic capture, PCB layout, and component selection using Altium Designer, with emphasis on radiation-tolerant design practices. * Develop, synthesize, and validate FPGA designs (VHDL/Verilog), incorporating mitigation strategies such as TMR, ECC, and scrubbing. * Design, configure, and troubleshoot IP networking protocols, with focus on TSN for deterministic networking and PTP for precise time synchronization across spacecraft systems. * Conduct system integration, hardware/software debugging, and fault injection testing to verify robustness under radiation and fault conditions. * Collaborate closely with flight software, avionics, and systems engineering teams to define computing, networking, and interface requirements. * Support mission operations through anomaly resolution and post-flight analysis of radiation-induced effects such as SEUs and TID. Required Qualifications * Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. * Strong proficiency in C/C++ and Python for embedded software development and automation. * Hands-on experience with real-time systems and Linux-based embedded computing. * Practical expertise in fault-tolerant computing methods (redundancy, checkpoint/restart, graceful degradation). * Knowledge of IP networking protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, routing, switching) with direct experience implementing TSN and PTP in real-time or mission-critical environments. * Understanding of radiation effects on electronics and software, with experience implementing mitigation strategies at multiple system levels. * Experience with system-level debugging tools and hardware/software integration. What we would love to see from you * Strong skills in writing, debugging and performance tuning low-level software for Linux and/or a RTOS, including the bootloader and device drivers. * Strong skills in hardware design using Altium Designer and/or Cadence Allegro for schematics and PCB layout. Bonus points if you have experience with multi-gigabit SERDES interfaces like SGMII, PCI Express and Serial RapidIO. * Solid background in FPGA development (VHDL/Verilog, synthesis, simulation, timing closure, hardware validation). * Familiarity with modern multi-core ARM-based System-on-Chip hardware, including the internal architecture. * Experience writing bare-metal code. * Strong skills in writing low-level software for Linux and/or a RTOS, including the bootloader and device drivers. * Exposure to radiation testing (heavy-ion, proton, or TID) and analysis. * Background in hardware-software co-design for reliability and fault-tolerance. * Prior hands-on experience supporting space missions.
