that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Software System Engineer to support the certification activities of the flight
software for the Nyx program. You will work in a dedicated team focused on verification & validation (V&V), software
certification, requirements tracing, test planning and system engineering interfacing. In this role, you will collaborate closely
with software development teams, system engineering, certification bodies, and safety authorities. You will work in a fast-paced,
collaborative environment where cross-functional integration is essential.

You will work at the border between complex time critical hardware components and modern software technologies, establishing tools for automated development, testing and deployment of Control System software. You will work in a close contact with engineers and scientists who develop and use high power laser systems. You work will be critical to achieving stable, repeatable and safe laser operation on the path to commercial fusion energy. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES * Develop, program and commission realtime automation architectures and machine protection systems around Beckhoff PLCs for various subsystems. * Design, build and support CI/CD pipelines for the Control System software. * Elicit and manage technical requirements together with engineers and scientists. * Collaborate on, and improve architecture and technology stack of the Control Systems. * Define and document functional specifications, test plans and acceptance criteria. WHAT YOU BRING * Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in IT or related Engineering field * 3+ years of hands-on industry experience in software development, related to backend or control system programming * Extensive experience programming in OOP languages like: C++, Python, Java, C#, Kotlin, Rust or similar * Understanding of modern software development practices, processes and tools (CI/CD, Git, automated testing, etc.) * Experience of working in a software development team following established software development practices and processes * Fluent English; German proficiency is welcome * Flexibility, adaptability and a hands-on, can-do attitude What sets you apart * Experience with Beckhoff PLCs and TwinCAT (structured text, ladder or function blocks) * Experience with EPICS (epics-controls.org) development * Experience with development of distributed systems * Experience of working with scientific facilities like laser laboratories, accelerators, etc * Understanding of real-time control concepts and common industrial fieldbuses and interfaces such as EtherCAT, Modbus-TCP, and serial protocols WHAT WE OFFER Our mission is motivation enough for many. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * System Architecture & Design * Define the Electrical Power System architecture in coordination with system engineering and mission requirements. * Size and specify solar arrays, batteries, and power conditioning/distribution units. * Ensure optimal power generation, storage, and distribution strategy across all mission phases and failure scenario and failure scenario * Component Selection & Specification * Evaluate and select flight-qualified components: solar cells, battery design, power conversion and protection elements. * Support the design of power conditioning and distribution units * Generate technical specifications * Analysis & Simulation * Conduct worst-case, reliability, and redundancy analyses in accordance with ECSS/NASA standards. * Integration & Testing * Define and execute Electrical Power System verification and validation plans (unit, subsystem, and system levels). * Support integration of Electrical Power System with other subsystems of the spacecraft. * Participate in environmental testing: vibration, thermal vacuum, EMC. * Project & Supplier Coordination * Interface with suppliers for COTS and internal teams for in-house designed power system components. * Support project development logic, planning, risk assessment, and technical reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR). * Documentation & Standards Compliance * Produce detailed documentation for design, analysis, test procedures, and compliance reports. * Ensure compliance with space-grade standards (NASA-STD, ECSS) * Contribute actively to reviews with customers and certification authorities for the Electrical Power System. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS * Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field. * Minimum 3–5 years of experience in spacecraft Electrical Power System or avionics system development. * Good level of understanding of the following domains: * Solar array systems * Space-qualified batteries * Power converters (DC/DC), MPPT, PCDU design * Power distribution architectures (bus, switched, redundant) * General electronics * Proficiency with simulation and software development tools (e.g. Github, Python). * Familiarity with ECSS/NASA standards and derating rules for space hardware. * Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical documentation skills. * Fluent in English; ability to write clear technical specifications and reports. DESIRABLE SKILLS * Experience with spacecraft platforms. * Experience with Lithium-Ion Batteries * Experience with battery management systems (BMS) and Battery failure modes. * Experience with solar arrays design and test for space applications Why you should join us! We want you as a talented System Engineer to help us in our mission by assisting in the preparation and execution of functional and environmental tests, maintaining requirement traceability, and documenting results to support verification closure. Working closely with senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams, you help ensure the Nyx perform as intended throughout the mission lifecycle. Key Responsibilities In your capacity as a System Engineer, your role will continuously evolve, but initially your day-to-day duties will include: * Support the definition and implementation of the Nyx Earth system integration and verification activities, which meets technical and programmatic requirements and considers the adequacy of model philosophy, facilities availability, planning and costing. * Define test plans and specifications with clear Success Criteria and support the generation of test procedures with the team. * Support the preparation, organization and execution of the spacecraft functional system campaigns to ensure the closure of all system safety and performance requirement, including nominal and off nominal spacecraft behaviors. * Coordinate the integration and test of subsystems and components to ensure alignment and connectivity of the higher-level integrated systems * Organize the reviews and preparation of related data packages in support of integration and verification activities. * Generate reports and products that drive the closure of verifications associated with the events. * Collaborate with all Functional Chain responsible and engineering disciplines to prepare and perform the tests. * Process the anomalies occurring during the test campaign in coordination with the Product Assurance Team and the rest of the Engineering Team. What we would love to see from you In the role of AIV Engineer ideally, you will have the following: * 1 to 5 years of experience in systems design, analysis, and testing of aerospace or space-related systems. * Hands-on hardware experience. * Practical experience / contact with functional test platforms, such as software in the loop, hardware in the loop, and bench testing. * Experience working with spacecraft requirements, NASA standards, and ECSS Standards * Experience in the development and verification of space hardware. * Spacecraft systems knowledge, with a focus on flight software, avionics, and guidance, navigation, and control.
