The Department of Physical Performance contributes through education, research, and dissemination, to an understanding of what determines physical performance with a focus on exercise physiology, biomechanics and technology.
The department is responsible for teaching and conducting research within areas of how physical performance is influenced by optimal training and technique in both a sport and health perspective as well as in rehabilitation of patients.
The department's activities take place in "state of the art" laboratories, equipped for studying human motions.
The department's target groups incorporate various populations; youth, elite athletes, the elderly population and patients.
We carry specific responsibility for research within the sports of cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, swimming, orienteering, and track and field.
The Department of Physical Performance at NIH offers a three- to four-year PhD fellowship from September/October 2026, four-year if teaching 25%.

This will be achieved through a combination of laboratory- and field-based studies. The exact research questions and methodological approaches will be further refined in collaboration with the successful candidate.
The PhD candidate will play an active role in all aspects of the project, including planning and development of study design, participant recruitment, data collection (assessments of performance, indirect calorimetry and gas exchanges, metabolic measurements, muscle biopsy allocation and analysis, etc.), data analysis, and dissemination of findings. The candidate will work closely with researchers at NIH and external collaborators.
There will be opportunities for international collaboration, and periods of research exchange at international institutions are encouraged, although not mandatory.
The project will be under the supervision of Associate Professor Øyvind Skattebo, Associate Professor Kristin Lundanes Jonvik and Professor Jostein Hallén.

The applicant must be eligible for admission to the doctoral program at NIH: PhD program - Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. Applicants should hold a two-year master’s degree in Sport Sciences or equivalent with the grade B or better. It is the candidate responsibility to document and eventually transform the grade.
The purpose of the recruitment position is for the candidate to achieve a PhD during the fellowship period. Admission to the doctoral program is therefore a condition for employment as a research fellow. The candidate must be able to complete the project during the fellowship period.
The employment period is three or four years, depending on teaching qualifications and needs. The fellow will have their workplace at the Department of Physical Performance, NIH, Oslo, Norway.
The candidate is required to submit an admission to the PhD program no later than six weeks after employment. A complete project description, including a proposal for the plan for the doctoral education/progress plan, will be developed in consultation with supervisors with the aim of formal admission to the doctoral program at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. The position A full-time position as Associate Professor / Professor in Sport Nutrition, with a particular focus on performance nutrition, is available at the Department of Physical Performance at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences (NIH) from December 2026 or soon thereafter. The position is closely linked to the establishment of a new Master program in Sport Nutrition starting in August 2026, where the successful candidate is expected to play a central role in program development, teaching, and supervision. The Department of Physical Performance has a long history of basic and applied research, focusing on biological effects of physical training from molecule to integrated physiology. The position and the scientific work The Department of Sport and Social Sciences, NIH, is advertising a three-to-four-year (depending on teaching assignments) PhD position in the field of sport management. The department comprises a broad academic environment that conducts research in sports philosophy, sports history, sports sociology, sports psychology, coaching, and sport management. The PhD project is partially predefined and focuses on how organized sport can contribute to increased physical activity among adults. Sport and physical activity are widely recognized as important contributors to public health, both in terms of physical and mental well-being. Nevertheless, participation levels among adults remain a challenge. According to the EU statistics on income and living conditions (EU-SILC), only around 50% of the Norwegian population participated in sport and physical activity in 2024. Among those who are physically active, the majority use facilities in the commercial sector, such as private fitness centers, while only about 10% of adults aged 16 and above participate in sport and physical activity through organized, non-profit sport clubs and organizations. While physical activity in the commercial sector can generate important health benefits, organized sport may offer additional societal and individual value. In particular, participation in sport clubs and voluntary organizations can foster social interaction, community building, and a sense of belonging while also supporting the integration of (newly arrived) immigrants. These social dimensions are increasingly relevant in light of rising concerns about loneliness and social isolation—especially among older adults, but also among younger age groups—as well as ongoing processes of global migration. Loneliness is known to be associated with negative mental health outcomes, underscoring the importance of examining the social benefits of physical activity within organized sport settings. The PhD candidate will have considerable freedom to define the specific focus of the project within this overall thematic framework. The project must be grounded in relevant sub-disciplines within sport management, such as organization, marketing, communication, governance, or sport policy. The project should ideally focus on the Norwegian/Scandinavian context, but comparisons with other contexts can be integrated. Possible research directions include, but are not limited to, how organizational structures, practices, and offerings within organized sport can be developed to attract, include, and retain adult participants. A potential focus may also be on collaboration and interaction between actors within organized sport (e.g., sport clubs and federations) and actors outside the sport sector (e.g., sponsors, commercial providers, or public authorities), including how relationships within the broader sports ecosystem can contribute to increased participation among adults. The candidate may further choose to focus on specific adult population groups, such as older adults or retirees, or young adults, where new participation patterns and challenges—such as increasing mental health concerns—are emerging. Thus, the traditional centralized grid is evolving into a highly distributed, data/ computation-intensive, AI-driven ecosystem in which smart meters, microgrids, aggregators, and edge devices actively participate in energy production, storage, consumption, and market interactions. This transition is fundamentally reshaping the structure of energy networks, shifting from centralized control to distributed, prosumer-driven ecosystems where interconnected multi-agents interact strategically in dynamic and uncertain environments. While Artificial Intelligence (AI) optimizes predictions or policies, energy systems are inherently multi-agent, strategic, and resource-constrained. Each agent has its own objective (e.g, cost, profit, comfort, sustainability, etc.) and interacts with other agents for shared resources (e.g., grid capacity, energy prices). In this new paradigm therefore, multiple autonomous agents including households, aggregators, and grid operators-must make real-time, interdependent decisions under shared constraints and competing objectives. Multi-agent learning and optimization show promise in this regard. Yet, the deployment of AI for decision making in critical infrastructure like the energy sector introduces challenges related to safety, fairness, accountability, transparency, and explainability (FATE), as well as compliance with emerging regulatory frameworks such as the EU AI Act and Data Act. More About the Position: In this project, you will develop game-theoretic AI frameworks by integrating Data-driven intelligence with principled decision structure for multi-agent decision making in energy systems. In addition, you will derive formal FATE metrics for the energy system and develop Explainable AI solutions to ensure transparency while also addressing privacy preservation and computation-efficiency requirements at the energy edge. Further, you will incorporate compliance-by-design AI architectures and models and validate our solutions across key energy use cases such as energy market optimization (demand response, transactive energy peer-to-peer trading, and renewable integration) and (energy edge+) distribution grid resilience.
