Position as PhD Research Fellow in Solid-state electrochemistry available at the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN), Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo.
Starting date no later than October 1, 2026.
The fellowship period is three years.
A fourth year maybe considered and it will involve 25 percent of other career-promoting work. Other career-promoting work may consist of teaching, supervision, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.

The PhD Research Fellow is a part of HYDROGENi, a national Norwegian Centre for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME) dedicated to the research and innovations within hydrogen and ammonia crucial for reaching the 2030 and 2050 goals of the Norwegian hydrogen road map. The Centre is coordinated by SINTEF, with University of Oslo (UiO) as one of the partners.
The PhD candidate will be affiliated with the Electrochemistry group at the Department of Chemistry which consists of around 25 highly dedicated professors, researchers, postdocs, PhD Research Fellows, engineers, admin, master and exchange students. The group is located in the new Life Science Building which offers modern research facilities. The group is among the world-leading in solid-state electrochemistry and materials science of proton-conducting oxides for electrochemical energy conversion technologies such as proton ceramic fuel cells and electrolysers. These technologies are central in the transition to renewable energy and in the electrification of industrial processes.
The PhD Research Fellowship will broadly address mixed ionic/electronic conducting oxygen/steam electrodes, where the group have extensive activities in novel perovskites combined with exsolution of metal nanoparticles. The goal of the PhD will be to seek mechanistic insight into the electrode polarization processes as well as strategies for improving performance by optimization of composition, microstructure, and the interface to the proton-conducting electrolyte. The content of the PhD Research Fellowship can be tailored according to the qualifications and academic interest of top candidates including the possibility for combining experimental, simulation and theoretical methods.
The PhD Research Fellowship will exist in an innovative environment with the possibility for collaboration with a range of academic and development projects on related topics, in particular with CoorsTek Membrane Sciences AS which is a leading technology developer of proton ceramic electrochemical cells and partner in the HYDROGENi project. The Electrochemistry group is part of SMN, which is an interdisciplinary research centre in materials science and nanotechnology at UiO. The Centre is an international leader in basic science within functional materials and nanoscience, with applications within renewable energy, materials science, and nanotechnology.

About the position Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow is available at the Department of Physics/Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology. Starting date no later than October 1, 2026. The appointment is a full-time position and is for a period of four years, 25 % of which is dedicated to teaching activities. No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo. Postdoctoral fellows who are appointed for a period of four years are expected to acquire basic pedagogical competency during their fellowship period within the duty component of 25 %. Project description and work tasks The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will broadly address exsolution of metal nanoparticles from oxide materials, which show great promise as electrocatalyst for energy conversion technologies. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will design and characterize materials to elucidate the fundamentals of the exsolution process, including the role of point defects and their interactions, extended defects, strain and more. The primary technique will be scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), using a newly installed state-of-the-art JEOL Mono ARM instrument. The research activities will also include the use of complimentary macroscopic techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS at synchrotron beam-line facilities. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be part of a team of experienced researchers working on related themes within the sections Semiconductor Physics and Quantum Technologies, and Electrochemistry, at the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN). The successful candidate should have a background in physics, and hold a PhD in solid state physics, materials science, or similar with a preferred expertise in metal oxides. Previous experience with writing custom code for data analysis, data acquisition, or simulation of experiments is a requirement. A good track record in cross-disciplinary research and collaboration will be positively evaluated, in particular if the candidate has shown an ability to combine experiments with theory/modeling. About the Department and what they are looking for in this position We invite applications for a full time position as Associate Professor in Geomechanics & Geohazards is available at the Department of Geosciences. The Department of Geosciences (GEO) at the University of Oslo is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science and is a leading research unit in Europe. The Department covers a wide breadth of topics, from mantle and lithosphere dynamics on Earth and other planets, via surface processes in the boundary layers between Earth’s surface and atmosphere, to the dynamics and interactions in the Earth's crust, soils, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. The Department of Geosciences has defined a strategy focusing on four main themes that cut across the Department: 1. Dynamics of the solid Earth and planets 2. Climate change and the coupled Earth system 3. Environmental geosciences 4. Geoscience in the Arctic The Department aims to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and hosts important contributors to the IPCC (UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). The staff consists of approximately 40 professors and associate professors, in addition to postdoctoral fellows, PhD candidates, researchers, and technical and administrative staff. In total, the Department currently has around 200 employees, one Centre of Excellence and, at present, seven grants from the European Research Council (ERC), along with numerous other grants from public and private institutions. The Department offers two bachelor study programmes “Geology and Geography” and “Geophysics and Climate” and one MSc-programme in “Geosciences”. This position is primarily associated with the Crustal Processes section that mostly works with geological processes related to rock deformation (fracture, friction, creep), fluid flow in crustal rocks (water, gas, magma), and fluid-rock interactions. Researchers develop studies from the atomic scale to the lithospheric scale, with applications in the domains of Solid Earth geohazards, porous media, critical raw materials, and large-scale tectonics. Research in the section uses field work, analytical and imaging techniques, modelling, data science, and experiments, and aims to unravel the processes that shape the evolution of the Earth’s crust, and their effects on the environment. The section consists of 40 people, and at present is organised under a Faculty centre between Geoscience and Physics (Njord Centre). About the position A PhD Research Fellowships is available at the Department of Mathematics, University of Oslo (UiO), in the research group of Prof. Andreas Carlson. Starting date as soon as possible, latest by January 1, 2027. The fellowship period is three years. No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo. The position is associated with projects funded by the Research Council of Norway (HAIRY, LUBRIBOT) and the European Research Council (TWIST). The research will provide a fundamental understanding of the physical processes that arise when droplets interact with soft fibres of complex geometry. A central focus is to develop a new understanding of droplet wetting on fibrous structures, as well as the coupling between active surface properties (and their temporal changes) and external driving mechanisms/forces. This will be achieved through design of new experiments, as well as developing new theoretical understanding of the flow physics. The projects aim to design and investigate new fibre and surface geometries for flow control and for applications such as water harvesting from atmospheric fog. The physical designs will be partly bio-inspired and will emphasize sustainability. The projects offer opportunities to collaborate with both national and international collaborators. The PhD student will: • Develop experiments of droplet flow and wetting on twisted fibers and on soft materials. • Be directly involved in integrating experiments and theoretical prediction. • Develop a new understanding of the fundamental flow physics through theoretical and/or numerical work. • Develop independence and be self-driven to advance with their research project. • Work in an interdisciplinary team with expertise in mechanics, complex fluids, physics and biophysics and sustainability thinking. • Follow our PhD program that include an educational component. This position is well suited for candidates who are highly motivated by fundamental science and excited about questions related to capillary flows, droplets, fluid–structure interactions and interfacial fluid mechanics.
