About the position​ A three-year postdoctoral research fellowship is available in the research group of Prof. Andreas Carlson at the Department of Mathematics, University of Oslo. Starting date no later than December 1, 2026. No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo. The position is part of two projects funded by the Research Council of Norway, focusing on the development of soft hairy surfaces for flow control and vibration-based soft robots. The overarching goal is to develop a new understanding of fluid flows coupled to complex and actively driven surfaces. Specifically, the projects aim to uncover the fundamental physical principles that govern the coupling between active surfaces and their surrounding fluid environment, and to use this knowledge to inspire new technological applications. The physical designs will be partly bio-inspired and will emphasize sustainability. This position is well suited to candidates who are highly motivated by fundamental science and excited about questions related to actively controlled or driven surfaces in the context of soft robotics, sensing, and flow control. You should be strongly self-driven, genuinely interested in an academic career, and eager to develop independence in your research. The postdoctoral fellow will join an international and interdisciplinary research group. The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period. It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to complete the project in the course of the period of employment. There are some administrative duties associated with the position connected to the project and research group activities. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defense are eligible for appointment.  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English. • Excellent track record in fundamental research in fluid mechanics, active materials, soft robotics, or within elastic materials. • A strong experimental background in developing and performing experiments in one of the following; soft materials, robotics, complex materials, fluids, interfaces, active surfaces. Desired qualifications:​ • Experience within some of the areas of active materials, robotics, sensors, elastohydrodynamics, interfacial flows and/or complex materials will also be considered beneficial. • A theoretical background and/or scientific computing will be also considered beneficial.  All candidates and projects will have to undergo a check versus national export, sanctions and security regulations. The section is active in many areas of applied and theoretical statistics and data science, and is heavily involved in research at the crossing of statistics and machine learning. The focus of this postdoctoral fellowship is to conduct cutting-edge research on AI-based forecasting and analytics for shipbroking and maritime decision support. The aim is to develop and analyze advanced models that integrate heterogeneous maritime data sources - such as AIS, metocean, emissions, port, cargo, and business data - to improve predictions of costs, freight rates, delays, emissions, and port logistics. While strongly rooted in real-world industrial use cases, the position has a clear academic orientation to develop advanced models for data rich environments.  The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the methodological foundations of maritime AI, publish in leading international journals and conferences, and collaborate closely with MAI’s academic and industrial partners to advance safe, transparent, and trustworthy AI in the maritime sector.  The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. About the position​ We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in Bioinformatics and Comparative Immunology, available at the Department of Biosciences. Project description​ The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research group led by Professors Finn-Eirik Johansen (Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and Shuo-Wang Qiao (Institute of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine). The group’s main research focus is the unique immune system of the Atlantic cod, which is characterized by the evolutionary loss of MHC class II molecules and CD4 T cells — components that are essential for immunocompetence in other vertebrates, including humans. We combine classical molecular biology and experimental immunology with cutting-edge technologies, including modern high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics. The project investigates the transcriptional profiles of Atlantic cod immune cells at the single-cell level and maps the immune receptor repertoires of cod B and T cells during homeostasis and in response to microbes, microbial products and vaccines.
