An opportunity has arisen in our Oxford based Research & Development team for a Scientist II. Reporting to the Head of
Development, you will play an integral role in all aspects of new product development including laboratory preparation,
sequencing, bioinformatics, and data interpretation. You will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the
development of our NGS capabilities and portfolio.
This role is suited to someone who wants to perform lab-based research and innovative development work whilst working in a

THE OPPORTUNITY Relation is offering an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Scientist II / Principal Scientist, In Vivo Biology & Translational Science to help drive our growing discovery portfolio. We are looking for an experienced in vivo biologist with a strong track record of independently leading outsourced work packages through CRO partnerships and translating data into actionable project decisions, initially in support of our osteoporosis programme with scope to contribute across indications as the portfolio grows. In this role, you will own the design, delivery, and interpretation of in vivo pharmacology work packages, partnering closely with CROs and cross-functional colleagues across medicinal chemistry, biologics, DMPK, and safety. You will work at the intersection of experimental science and data-driven discovery within a growing TechBio company. DAY TO DAY, YOU WILL * Lead in vivo pharmacology strategy for projects within Relation's discovery programmes, proposing and championing the right study designs to support go/no-go decisions and milestone planning across multiple concurrent projects * Drive the execution, monitoring, and interpretation of in vivo pharmacology studies across target engagement, PK/PD, and disease-relevant efficacy endpoints * Own end-to-end CRO relationships for externally commissioned in vivo work packages: from vendor selection and SOW set-up through in-life liaison, data review, troubleshooting, and reporting * Commission in vivo-relevant in vitro and ex vivo assays, such as target engagement, pharmacodynamic, and mechanistic readouts, that directly inform study decisions and data interpretation * Translate biology data into clear, actionable insights and recommendations, communicating findings effectively to project teams and senior stakeholders * Maintain rigorous documentation standards across outsourced study packages, including ELN, protocol authoring and review, and study reporting * Champion Relation's collaborative, ambitious and science-driven culture, sharing scientific expertise across the team and helping to build an outstanding drug discovery organisation PROFESSIONALLY, YOU WILL HAVE * A PhD in Biology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, or a related scientific discipline or equivalent experience in industrial drug discovery * Deep expertise in mammalian in vivo study design across target engagement, PK/PD, and efficacy endpoints, with the scientific judgement to define the right experiments to drive project decisions, a sound knowledge of 3Rs principles, and a proven record of delivering through CRO partnerships to quality and timeline * Experience commissioning or interpreting in vitro and ex vivo assays in support of in vivo programmes, including target engagement, pharmacodynamic, and mechanistic readouts * Experience across multiple stages of drug discovery (target ID through candidate selection) and across more than one disease area or physiological system * Scientifically rigorous and analytically critical, with the ability to interrogate data, challenge assumptions, and deliver across a broad and fast-moving project portfolio * Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills: able to distil complex biology into clear project-level insights and influence cross-functional decisions * A deep passion for disease biology and drug discovery, with intellectual curiosity, enthusiasm for tackling complex scientific problems, and a drive to integrate emerging technologies with experimental science * Bonus experience: experience working across different drug discovery modalities, including small molecules and/or biologics; experience in a TechBio or AI-driven discovery environment. The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. It will provide researchers with unique opportunities to explore the structure of materials at the atomic level. Neutron scattering at ESS will address critical questions in physics, chemistry, geology, materials science and life science. We are now looking for an Instrument Scientist for the DREAM powder diffractometer. The position is with the Diffraction & Imaging Division. About the division The Diffraction & Imaging Division consists of the scientific staff that are leading the instrument construction projects and the staff that will eventually execute the day-to-day operations of six neutron instruments. The upcoming responsibilities of the division are Finalize the installation and commissioning of all instruments in the division Deliver state-of-the-art scientific capabilities for internal and external users to enable the wider science community to advance science and technology Deliver scientific results from the neutron instruments in collaboration with the user community and other divisions in the science directorate Plan and implement further developments and upgrades of the instruments Push the state-of-the-art capabilities of neutron instrumentation to make maximum benefit from the ESS source. Main Responsibilities The DREAM instrument is a neutron powder diffractometer that offers great flexibility for crystal and magnetic structure studies of ordered and disordered materials. The construction of the instrument is completed. The immediate mission is to commission the instrument with neutrons. Commissioning with neutrons is expected to begin in 2027 and continue through 2028, after which the instrument will transition into operation within the ESS user programme. The instrument scientist will work closely with the core instrument team at ESS, comprising another instrument scientist, an instrument computational scientist, and an instrument operational engineer, and in strong interaction with partner institutions and ESS technical services. The successful candidate must be active in a scientific field of direct relevance to DREAM. Essential qualifications and experience: PhD in experimental studies in the physical sciences relevant to the DREAM scientific programme, preferably in energy or nanoscaled materials. Practical experience in neutron powder diffraction Working knowledge of the data analysis for diffraction software GSAS-II, TOPAS, FullProf, Jana2006, PDFgui Evidence of an independent research profile in relevant science areas supported by a publication record Ability to work collaboratively and individually Good interpersonal communication and presentation skills, and the ability to interact effectively with staff and users at all levels. Flexibility to requests to work out-of-hours to support users Responsible attitude to personal safety and the safety of others Willingness to international travel Desirable experience: Experience with user operation at a large-scale neutron facility Experience with time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction Experience with pair-distribution function (PDF) measurements Practical experience in operating complex sample environments relating to neutron powder diffraction. Experience of working in an international environment is preferred and excellent oral and written English skills are prerequisites.
