As a Senior Software Engineer I at Thought Machine, you will own and deliver highly complex, end-to-end engineering work items. You will look beyond immediate coding tasks to consider long-term system architecture, product strategy, and client outcomes. In this role, you will act as a technical anchor for your team, solving ambiguous problems, guiding less experienced engineers, and actively shaping our technical and product roadmaps. WHAT YOU’LL DO Technical Leadership * Design & Build: Design and build highly reliable, secure, and scalable software solutions for complex problems. * Architecture & Standards: Contribute to team guidelines ensuring our services meet top-tier security, performance, cost, and reliability standards. * Code Quality & Peer Review: Set a high bar for code quality by providing constructive, detailed feedback on design documents and pull requests. * Operational Excellence: Investigate issues across multiple services in production, drive learning from operational incidents, and feed improvements back into our prioritisation process. * Hiring: Actively participate in our growth by leading technical interviews. Product & Delivery * End-to-End Ownership: Own work items from initial concept to production, creating structured delivery plans, managing dependencies along the way and owning delivery of these work items. * Product Vision: Partner with Product Managers to prioritize features, translate client requirements into technical specifications, and ensure solutions align with our overarching product vision. * Incident Management: Confidently own the resolution of incidents, coordinating mitigation, fixes, and post-mortem artifacts. Collaboration & Mentorship * Team Growth: Mentor and support less experienced engineers, helping them level up technically and adapt to Thought Machine’s engineering philosophy. * Stakeholder Management: Translate highly technical problems and architectural decisions into clear concepts for non-technical stakeholders. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR * Technical Expertise: Strong proficiency in modern backend languages (ideally Go or Python) and experience building distributed, cloud-native systems (Kubernetes, AWS/GCP, gRPC, PostgreSQL). * Problem Solving: A proven track record of breaking down ambiguous, and complex problems into clear, deliverable milestones. * Production Operations: Experience supporting high-throughput systems in production environments and diagnosing complex issues across distributed systems. * Egoless Collaboration: A highly collaborative, feedback-receptive mindset focused on finding the best outcomes for our clients and business rather than defending personal preferences. * Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build consensus and document technical designs clearly. You'll be responsible for building both backend services and frontend experiences. Our clients range from the world's largest financial institutions to smaller regional banks. Our systems must cater to each of these use cases, so we care deeply about providing the ability to configure and customise the user experience based on the client's or end user's persona. Software engineers are expected to bridge the gap between back-end and front-end, crafting delightful experiences that delight all our clients. This is a full-time, permanent position based in our Lisbon office, requiring four days a week onsite. At Thought Machine, our Senior Software Engineers specialised in Infrastructure play a crucial role in deploying and maintaining our cutting-edge software, developing tools and integrations with third-party infrastructure components used in our customers’ environments. The role spans across building mechanisms to automate and streamline deployment processes, to facilitating infrastructure changes in the data and streaming platforms which support our products, among other things. We build automation to provide an intuitive and reliable user experience to operate and integrate with Vault for Thought Machine engineers and bank SREs. Duties * Design and implement end-to-end features across the stack, including web applications and backend services. * Ensure your solutions are delivered with security, performance, scale, and user experience in mind. * Write automated unit, integration, acceptance tests, etc. * Interface with other engineering teams to ensure that features are added in a structured and coherent way. * Managing and debugging your features from testing environments to production. * Translating customer requirements into a clear plan that can be delivered via tasks. * Collaborating as part of a cross-functional team of backend, front-end, and full-stack engineers. Essential * Experience with React and TypeScript. * Proficiency in writing modern web applications. * Experience with writing REST apis and services * A keen eye for detail and a passion for writing clean, readable, properly tested code. * Experience in integrating automated tests into the development lifecycle. * Interest in client-facing projects, including scoping requirements and defining deliverables. * A proactive approach to learning and development. Desirable * A degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a similar technical field * Knowledge of banking/finance. * Experience with AWS or other cloud providers. * Proficiency in Golang or Python. * An understanding of both UX and UI principles. * Experience using Figma and UI frameworks. * Visual design skills. * Familiar with databases (SQL or NoSQL). * Experience with client/server software architectures & networking, or microservice architectures. * Experience using Kubernetes.
